It's a mixed bag where some are rather easy to work out & a little disappointing, but the majority are rather good, they seem complicated but have deceptively simple answers that make you think “Of course!“ at the reveal. I rather enjoyed reading these but they left me feeling a bit dissatisfied as you had no sooner started getting into the story than it finished. I'm looking forward to getting around to finally reading the series of novels. 4🌟

Old is definitely gold! I have enjoyed most of the short stories which are well plotted that it has me guessing a lot 😅 Definitely an easy read for rainy days here 🙏🏻

I didn't want it to end! Very happy to realize there are 12 novels featuring this character for me to sink my teeth into. Tone and length really lent to reading these short stories aloud. Very much into the 'little old lady is a lot sharper than you think' trope, and as much as the humble village life is overplayed, it's satisfying to see a mystery-solving protagonist grounded in life experience, rather than just uncanny observational skills.

Robotswithpersonality A lot less blatantly objectionable content than I encountered in And Then There Were None, but definitely still dated in values and opinions.

⚠️Orientalism, fetishization of non-English women and religions, xenophobia/racism, ableism, misogyny

Banting: "was a popular term for losing weight by excluding sugar from your diet. It was named after a Mr Banting." [Which I think refers to the Canadian doctor who helped discover insulin?!]. The things you learn by accident.

Robotswithpersonality The internet has spoken. General consensus is a thin pudding. Sounds like comfort food to me 2y
bnp I'm familiar with using cornstarch (US)/ cornflour (UK) to thicken what we call a pudding in the US. Is that what this is? 2y
Robotswithpersonality @bnp Looks like pudding where cornstarch is the main ingredient (or at least the name of the pudding/custard) is a thing as well! 2y

“There is a great deal of wickedness in village life. I hope you dear young people will never realize how very wicked the world is.” —Miss Marple

Finally finished this book of mystery stories and I loved it! I adore Miss Marple even more. I think I‘m ready to go through her books in chronological order now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Leftcoastzen Awww , pretty photo! 3y
EvieBee @Leftcoastzen Thank you, Linda! 🫶🏼 3y
batsy Love the photo! I had the urge to watch some of the Marple TV episodes starring Geraldine McEwan and had the luck of finding them on YouTube. Now I feel like reading all of the Marple books at once 😆 3y

erzascarletbookgasm What a lovely edition! 💖 3y
EvieBee @batsy That is awesome, Batsy! She‘s so cozy, right? If you get the chance, try watching the ones with Joan Hickson. They‘re so nostalgic I could scream! 😩🤣 3y
EvieBee @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you, Jessie! 💕🫶🏼 (edited) 3y
Linsy Love that cover!! 🧡 3y
batsy @EvieBee Oh, yes! I love Joan Hickson in the role so much and the show was really well done 💖 3y
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy @EvieBee I‘ve been watching a lot of the Poirot series recently, starring David Suchet. I‘m surprised I was still baffled by the murders even though I‘ve read the books, but that was a long time ago 😄. Maybe now I should continue with the Marple series..☺️ (edited) 3y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm @EvieBee Aaah yes to David Suchet's Poirot! So good! 🤩 I'm glad there's so many episodes, it feels like I'll never run out even though I've probably watched them all over the years lol (and yes, continually surprised by the solutions though I've read it before 😂) 3y
EvieBee @Linsy Thank you, Linsy! 🥰 3y
EvieBee @erzascarletbookgasm @batsy I started watching Poirot too last year. It was sooo much better than I remembered. I allowed myself an episode daily for anxiety lol! Because there are way more Poirot stories and novels I decided to start with Miss Marple and complete the whole lot. (edited) 3y
StaceGhost Yes to all of this! We received the Poirot box set as a wedding gift and it‘s our favorite comfort watch ❤️ we also just finished the McEwan and just started the Hickson series! 3y
EvieBee @StaceGhost That is an awesome wedding present! I‘m hoping someone will make a series of the Marple short stories like they did for Poirot. 🫶🏼❤️ 3y
StaceGhost @EvieBee that would be so good! Or at least, I hope it would lol I did not like the new poirot movies at all 3y
EvieBee @StaceGhost So I resisted watching them because I‘m a purist but I did watch The Nile. Not a huge fan but I loved the attention to detail with clothing and surroundings. Not sure if I‘ll watch the others. 3y
Bookzombie I haven‘t watched read all of her books, but I have watched the Geraldine McEwan/Julia McKenzie series and enjoyed it. Not a Marple, but I just finished Hugh Laurie‘s new Why Didn‘t They Ask Evans? production and really enjoyed it too. 3y
EvieBee @Bookzombie Those are good! And I just saw that pop up on Amazon or Hulu, can‘t remember but I might have to watch that! I enjoyed the 80s version so I imagine it should be good! 3y

Finished this over a several months just reading 2 stories a few times a week. I sped my reading up for the #novelnovember readathon. Began this week on p.248, finished the book, reading 150 pages. It was fun to be in Miss Marple‘s village world. Seemed as if her words were sparse, as well as her images. I could picture her characters, places, landscapes, etc. perfectly with her imagery.

Andrew65 Great 👏👏👏 3y

I realized after I checked this out that I‘ve read the stories in various collections already. I love Miss Marple though, so it was fun to read them again & be reminded of the outcome of each mystery. Unlike some of Christie‘s collections, I enjoyed all of these stories & getting to revisit the fun side characters in Miss Marple‘s world. #scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick 20 stories-301 pts

I mean it‘s Miss Marple. Luckily most of these short stories don‘t show off the worst of Christie - the racism, xenophobia, homophobia, though a little of it creeps in now and then. But Miss Marple! I only wish there had been more of her and less of Poirot. I needed a little break, and these short stories served, as Christie might write, admirably.

... It is a very favourite place, that. There by the jasmine hedge. That is where the milkman asked Annie if he could put up the banns.”
“Dash it all, Aunt Jane,” said Raymond, “ don‘t spoil all the romance. Joyce and I aren‘t like the milkman and Annie.”
“That is where you make a mistake, dear,” said Miss Marple. “Everybody is very much alike, really. But fortunately, perhaps, they don‘t realize it.”

The colors on this cover are fantastic! Although I always like the novels better, Christie preferred Miss Marple in short story form and it's easy to see why in this charming collection. This contains the full text of The Tuesday Club Murders.

Loved this book. If you‘re unfamiliar with the short story form, or you shy away from it, check this one out. For one, it‘s Agatha Christie. Two, it‘s the smoothest, palatable delivery of the form that I will now recommend to anyone who is looking to dive into it. Three, each story is fun from start to finish. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread
