Mehso-so

Holmes, Marple, and Poe is about three PI's in NYC. They solve cases using whatever means necessary. They first help solve one case that leads to three more. While the book kept my interest, it was jaw-dropping or thrilling to me. I didn't see much character development by the end of the book, they were still pulling the same kind of crap.

Aims42 I felt the same way, and I have no desire to continue reading the series. Which is such a bummer because the premise sounded soooo good! 17h
RamsFan1963 I like the concept, but I've been burned too many times by Patterson's hack writing, I usually skip books with his name associated with it. 16h

Really enjoyed this book! Short stories featuring Miss Marple, written by popular authors like leigh bardugo, Lucy foley and Val McDermid. This was my Christmas book from 2023, desperately tried to finish it by Christmas 2024 - almost made it but not quite!

The village of Chipping Cleghorn is surprised by a very unusual newspaper announcement. This week, amongst the furniture for sale, the local gazette's announcement page contains an advertisement which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October 29th, at Little Paddocks at 6.30 p.m.‘

Unsure if it is a practical joke or one of those new 'murder mystery games', the neighbours gather at the house on Friday evening (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf but no-one seems to know what's happening, not even the inhabitants of Little Paddocks: Letitia Blacklock, Dora Bunner, cousins Patrick & Julia, & lodger Philippa. Then suddenly, without warning the lights go out & gunshots are heard....

This one starts off quite slowly but once Miss Marple appears, the pace picks up & the twists begin. It's classic Christie, where the subtle clues are liberally sprinkled throughout the narrative,

OutsmartYourShelf though I'm not sure it's her “most ingenious murder mystery“. I remember this one from the 1980s TV series which had a young Kevin Whately (pre-Inspector Morse) as one of the police officers. 4🌟

TWs: xenophobia, chronic illness/death.

My second Miss Marple book. This one takes her out of the village of st Mary‘s mead, which was a bit of a shame, but I enjoyed the characters and again, did not guess who did it. She‘s so good.

I enjoyed this far more than I expected to. It‘s definitely a boilerplate mystery but much more winks and nods were felt over anything I read with Poirot. Maybe I just relate to Miss Marple more. 😅

Should be noted though - lots of not great allusions to POC, off hand comments to LGBTQIA, and pretty clumsy with discussion of mental illness. This was published in 1964 and it shows.

It‘s probably criminal of me to admit this is my first dalliance with this Agatha Christie heroine - but I had no idea Miss Marple was so saucy! And in the 1960s! 🤭

Ruthiella Miss Marple is much more clued in than people give her credit! 3w

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Finally finished my first book of 2025!
This was a really good showing for Agatha Christie - definitely more on me than on her that it took me almost two weeks to read.
I ask for a Christie book every year from our work Secret Santa, and it‘s always fun to see what my colleagues pick for me 🤗
And, as ever, I didn‘t come close to guessing the true culprit.

behudd @TheAromaofBooks this was my January #bookspin book! 3w
