The author did a lot of deep research into Dorothy Hale and the Café Society crowd. I respect that. It shows. But there‘s only so much material history about Dorothy to work with, so it felt like most of the book was finding ways to take what little concrete details exist and make the book out of that. I liked the idea of balancing the capitalist approach (comparing it to the Dark Side of the Force) in business & encouraging ways to revamp it through social justice, equity, diversity, & inclusion. Not a casual read but if you‘re a “boss,” this book is for you. But “A House of My Own” cut me to the bone. For as long as I can remember, I‘ve always wanted a place to call my home. Read the rest of my review: https://wp.me/p9KtkP-k6 #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread

One cannot deny that the show completely lost all of its cache once the final season aired. There are reasons for that, and the book gives you opinions and insightful information from all sides of the creative team to let you make your own determination. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread

Olivia is a more fully functioning human being, having had to grow up at a very young age due to a family tragedy – unlike Bridget Jones, Ms. Fielding‘s most famous heroine, who seemed to make stumbling through her thirties endearing. At the heart of it, it‘s a coming-of-age story about a misunderstood girl. As such, the ending was unsatisfying to me. It left me wanting closure. But what was so unique was that I didn‘t expect one. The Age of Innocence | Edith Wharton

The specter of New York looms as its own character in the novel, and all of its citizens play their lives out so spectacularly. Wharton paints this wonderfully manipulative underbelly even while its inhabitants breed their discontent as it has been done for generations before. The idea of a federally funded unit being set up to eliminate books was an amazing premise. What‘s so shocking about the book is that it‘s not so much the government is a tool, but going along with what the people want. I enjoyed this book a LOT. It‘s crazy to think about the power we give to the wrong things. This isn‘t a self-help book by any means, but it‘s a plain-talking book about something we should all be aware of. Local, born and raised, tourist, whatever. You get an idea in your head about how a city should be. Then you realize, one of your favorite places in the world was known as the Murder Capital of the World and the rose-colored glasses fly off your face. This book was a treat. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread

It was very easy to sit at the bar in, say, La Scala in Beverly Hills, or Ernie's in San Francisco, and to share in the pervasive delusion that California is only five hours from New York by air. The truth is that La Scala and Ernie's are only five hours from New York by air. California is somewhere else. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #raconteuse #coolgirlsread

The Awakening | Kate Chopin

Chopin perfectly captures the stifling atmosphere of Louisiana which reflects Edna‘s state of mind too. I feel like the atmosphere is a Thing with Southern writers. My version included a few of her short stories & I forgot she wrote Désirée‘s Baby. Incredibly aspirational from a short story writer‘s standpoint. #amreading #bookworm #bibliophile #bookish #booknerdigans #bookblogger #tsundoku #greatreads #readmorebooks #coolgirlsread

Day 21: clinch covers. I don‘t read romance so you get a poem instead: what calls the heart
To read a book
Is it to be taught a lesson?
To while away the hours?
To learn?
To me
Reading is an escape
From the rat race of life
To hide away in
someone else‘s thoughts
To see if they mirror your own
And if they don‘t
Find something constructive to say
Even if there‘s nothing to say at all. #riotgrams #latepost
