Yesterday's second-hand #bookhaul !

The most expensive was the tagged book, which was 7$. The trivia book's battery still works! I'd call that a score! And any Vonda McIntyre is an insta buy in this house. I scored!

Aimeesue Nice! LLAP! 🖖🏽 3mo
Bookwomble I've been reading the ST 365 book alongside a rewatch of the show for what feels like years! It's taking me longer to view than I'd planned, but I'm enjoying having the inside view on favourite episodes, even if the entities are quite brief. 3mo
tournevis @Bookwomble It's super interesting and so far most of the articles points to elements I found the most interesting in the episodes! 3mo

Inherited the tagged from my brother 4 years ago. Haven‘t read it, haven‘t got rid of it…bc it seems like an important worthy book, but the size of it repels me 😳

Anyone read it?

Bklover I think of it more as a reference book than something to read cover to cover. I open it and randomly read a couple of pages. 2y

If this can give somebody closure from the pain of losing a loved one I think it is a beautiful idea...♡♡♡

Tamra I heard a podcast that featured this phone. It was both sad and heartening. On a lighter note, a recent Radio Lab episode had a story about a “taddle phone” in a preschool that worked really well. I think it‘s a good idea for all ages!! 6y

If “museum” is on a building, I‘m game to have a look. This book mentions some of the more unusual collections in the world, dedicated to such things as asparagus, absinthe, sharks, pig fat, antique vibrators, noses, phallic specimens (a blue whale‘s is largest: 5‘4”), cleaning, cannibalism, hearses, counterfeits, bordellos, BDSM, ticks (850 species), wax models of infant diseases, jewelery made from human hair, chamber pots, coffee cups, etc.

tournevis I've been to the counterfeit museum in Paris. It was great! 6y
Lindy @tournevis I must add that one to my list for the next time I‘m there. 👍 6y
tournevis @Lindy It was in 2000, so I do not know if it is still open. 6y

An atlas of the world‘s hidden wonders: it‘s the kind of book that‘s fun to browse. I was surprised how many of the them I had already encountered in fiction, like the dog suicide bridge (Internet photo above); Svarlbard seed vault; Shah Cheragh mirrored mosque; the difference engine; Saltstraumen maelstrom; taxidermy shop in Paris; Lumilinna snow castle; Chittagong ship-breaking yards; House on the Rock, Wisconsin; Weeki Wachee mermaids; etc.

Lindy P.S. Can you name any of the novels that contain the places or things that I‘ve listed? 6y

Atlas Obscura has an entry for a Polish village of painted houses (Zalipie, inset above) but they missed a great opportunity: Čičmany village in Slovakia is full of gorgeous painted houses, all done in geometric white designs on black. Unfortunately, the only entry for Slovakia is Čachtice castle, where it‘s said that a 17th c Hungarian countess bathed in the blood of virgins.

An imaginative “merman” is displayed in a glass case in Banff, Alberta. I‘ve been to over 30 of the places covered in this atlas, but I haven‘t seen this peculiar thing which is located in my own province. It will be easy to add to my list because I‘m travelling to Banff tomorrow to stay at my brother‘s home for a week.

Kimzey @Lindy Thanks for the clarification. Hmmm, I think some traditions may not be worth preserving! But who am I to judge? 😬 I wonder how this practice got started? What were the perceived benefits? 6y

VeganCleopatra 😮 How have you managed to go to so many great places? 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra I've made travel a priority in my life. A lot of hard work, sacrifice, and determination. But for me it's worth it 😊 7y
VeganCleopatra Ah good, you weren't just born rich then. 😉 You sound like a person with good tips, care to share? 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I wish I was born rich! 😂😂 I've got lots to share, I love talking about travel as much as I do books. Any specific questions though? @VeganCleopatra 7y
VeganCleopatra I'm going to brainstorm on it and get back to you! But while I'm thinking more, how did you plan for your Kenya trip and save costs etc? Have you been to Africa before and already knew some tips ahead of time or will you be learning this trip? 😏 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra I have been to Morocco, but this will be my first foray in cental/east Africa. I usually travel solo, so I like to book tours rather than backpacking. There is a huge range available in terms of costing, counties to visit, travel styles. Some companies I'd recommend are Intrepid Travel, G Adventures, or Dragoman. For Kenya we are using On The Go tours for the first time, we know someone who did the exact same tour. 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra In terms of saving, you need to make it a priority. For me I don't have kids, a house or even a car. I'm a home body so I don't go out. I just save every penny I can. Luckily I have a job that is flexible, and let's me take as much time off as I want (unpaid). But if you have kids or a mortgage don't be discouraged. You may just need to save for longer or go away for a shorter period. I hope that helps? 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @VeganCleopatra with regards to tours, I like them cuz they plan the itinerary, arrange lodging, sometimes meals, and you pay a lot of the costs upfront. Also, when you go to more exotic or "dangerous" countries, you have that extra security of travelling with a group. And they know the safe places to go. 7y
