This was the perfect read for the start of fall reading season. The less you know going into it the better, but if you want something atmospheric and chilling this is it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m pretty sure if I read this before the film I would have loved it. But I couldn‘t shake knowing the secret from my brain. I didn‘t feel the same way about Mystic River but this one was solely based on the reveal so it was just an ok for me.

I loved the way Lehane laid everything out and being in Teddys mind was unsettling. It‘s an excellent book if you don‘t know.

Up next…a new-to-me author I‘ve been wanting to read.

#bookspinbingo

Amiable I adore Dennis Lehane! I did not love this book, however. If you want to read more Lehane after this one, I‘d be happy to recommend others to dive into. 9mo
GinaKButler @Amiable I would love your recommendations! 9mo
Amiable @GinaKButler “Mystic River” is my absolute favorite. “Small Mercies” —also fabulous. Loved his detective series that starts with “A Drink Before War” — it has a very Boston flavor and feel to it. His Danny Coughlin trilogy is also pretty good. That gives you a sense of Providence, RI. 9mo

GinaKButler @Amiable Thank you! We are going to Cooperstown this summer with my son‘s baseball team and are planning on visiting Boston afterwards. Will need to pick up that series! 9mo
Amiable @GinaKButler “Mystic River” and “Small Mercies” are also set in Boston—Lehane does a superb job with realistic dialogue. I can actually hear his characters speaking in my head. (Although it helps that I lived in Boston for a number of years. 😀) 9mo
Amiable Also —have you been to Cooperstown before? My boys loved it there when they were younger. Another tourist attraction nearby is Howe Caverns, where you can take a boat tour underground through a cave system. My siblings and I loved doing that when we were kids and my family used to go camping in upstate NY every summer. 9mo
GinaKButler @Amiable We‘ve never been. Dax and his team are playing in the baseball tournament there. I‘m not sure how much down time we‘ll have, but I‘d love to check out the Howe Caverns! Thank you so much for the recommendation! My dad went to Syracuse and I‘d like to also see that campus…I‘ve never been. 🤗 9mo

The book is essentially about four days in the main character‘s life. But it won‘t take you that long to read it. This is a wonderfully paced noir novel.

Time to see the movie.

1) Shutter Island, it was just weird 🤷🏻‍♀️

2) The Northman, I was at the movie wondering wth is this and wanting to just get up and leave 😫

3) The Matrix 😳😳

#midyearcheckin!

I have a spreadsheet, in addition to Storygraph, that I've been using to stat my reads.

So, here's some more stats for you:

24 male, 21 female, 1 compilation read.
Earliest read was 1940 and latest was 2023.
Library books was 29, ILL is 18, Kindle 1, Own books was 1 (with 2 DNF).
18 pages is the shortest and 513 pages is the longest.

Despite only reading 1 book in Jan./Feb./March, it's been a good year so far!

I inhaled this book and when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it!

The story starts off fairly straightforward but the more you read, the more you wonder about the story being presented.

Definitely need to read more Dennis Lehane after this!

Highly recommended!

I really want to watch the movie again now!! (Also, the ending in the movie is better. 🤷 The ending here leaves you guessing as to whether he knows... actually if I hadn't seen the movie first I would have thought he didn't...and to me, that's the best part of the whole story.) I would have rated this 4 if not for that vague ending. ⚠️ ...content warning and triggers for excessive strong language, talk of suicide, racism, brief mention of rape.

“Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane is about Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniel and his partner, Chuck Aule who go on a fairy to Shutter Island, the home of Ashecliffe hospital for the criminally insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando (who was incarcerated for drowning her three children). Despite being kept in a locked cell under constant supervision she has escaped the hospital, But quickly things change for the worse.

Thicdaddy Not the main theme of the book but my favourite theme I picked up on was Grief. Many of the characters in the book suffer from Grief over lost loved ones. Teddy, most obviously suffers from the memory of his wife Dolores, while chuck suffers angrily from the memory of his girlfriends internment. Rachel Solando has been driven mad by the grief of her husbands death, and grief for the loss of the children who she killed. 3y
Thicdaddy I would recommend this novel to people who love putting the pieces together as it is a perfect psychological thriller if you enjoy the book or movie of “American Psycho” I would definitely recommend you give this one a read. 3y
Thicdaddy I would rate Shutter Island 9.8/10 as it has a phenomenal main character, very unique plot, keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole read and at the end has you in awe of the entire story with all the the plot twists. It‘s not a 10/10 for me because at times it‘s almost too hard to follow. The story is in first person point of view of the protagonist Teddy Daniels 3y

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 https://suspensebookreviews.home.blog/2021/09/02/shutter-island-by-dennis-lehane...

An intense psychological thriller about a US Marshal Teddy and his partner who are sent to Shutter Island, where a psychiatric hospital holds the most notorious criminally insane. Among these inmates is a woman Rachel, the most dangerous on the island. On their search for Rachel, Teddy learns truths about not only the island, but also himself.

I saw the movie when it first came out (because Leonardo DiCaprio, duh), but honestly couldn‘t remember what happened.

This book is fast-paced, filled with tension and humorous banter, and it‘s creepily atmospheric. What an awesome setting... a mental institution all alone on an island in a hurricane. And holy plot twists!

The only possible explanation I have for forgetting that movie ending is that Leo is distracting as all hell. 😂

SailorMoon @kaysworld1 I read it over a night! Too gripping to put down and go to sleep! 🤯 I then watched the movie but, nevermind the presence of my true love Leonardo Di Caprio, I didn't enjoy it as much as the book. I must say I bought this book just because of the captivating cover (Leonardo Di Caprio helped too!), but it turned out to be an amazing thriller with a lot of mind games, riddles and mysteries.
If you have seen the movie, you could just as easily read the book because -as it always happens- the movie left out a lot of capital parts (although it's a really good one!).
I strongly recommend it!

cherinium I just mentioned this book the other day! I was really not enjoying this book at all until the plot twist was revealed. Then, I realized what master manipulator Lehane had been. For me, the twist turned a 2-3 star book into a definite 5! This book is one of the reasons I still have so much trouble bailing on a book I'm not enjoying. I always ask myself, "what if its like Shutter Island, and the ending completely blows my mind?" ??? 7y

cherinium BTW, I really wish there as the option to edit my comment... I'm embarrassed at my typos in that one. 😳 7y
emilyhaldi @cherinium If you click on your comment an option should pop up to edit!! But no worries on this one bc the typos don‘t bother me at all! I can see why you might have been a little bored by this one but the plot twist really does blow your mind, right?! I‘m excited to read the book knowing the twist beforehand to see how well the beginning is crafted 🙌🏻 7y
cherinium @emilyhaldi I keep meaning to reread the book to see if my opinion of the beginning of the book changes with the knowledge of the twist, but there are many other things to read first. And on the topic of editing, I do get an option to edit when it's my own post, but whenever I click on a comment on someone else's post, I'm only given options to delete or mark as a spoiler--no edit option. 7y
ephemeralwaltz Love this - both the book and movie. I have to say the book left me a bit underwhelmed... This is an exceptional case of movie better than the book! 7y
