I wanted a light fiction break from Nonfiction November, and this did the trick.

It‘s YA, a coming of age story about a princess who goes undercover to have a summer as a normal person. It‘s a world where 18 year olds attend “coming-of-age” type balls and a computer can tell you who would be a good genetic match for you.

I probably wouldn‘t have finished if I weren‘t curious how the #LGBTQIA thread would play out. It‘s a light pick for me.

Soubhiville Would work for the #LoveTriangle prompt for #booked2023. 2y

This is the second book I‘ve read by E. K. Johnston and the second one that I didn‘t feel lived up to my expectations. I did like The Afterward a lot, but I couldn‘t quite bring myself to continue with this one when I had 4 other ebook holds come in this weekend.

shanaqui I liked The Afterward OK too, and yet hadn't thought at all of picking up anything else by the author. Hmmmmm. 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @shanaqui I think I mostly picked this up for its title. And another book of hers I want to read due to the title 😆 2y

These are the 6 books I picked up at Recycled Reads today. I couldn‘t remember what the order of the Margaret Atwood series was, and alas this is book 3 so I‘ll have to keep an eye out for the other 2.

What are your feelings on buying retired library books? I usually pull off the protective plastic and peel off the library sticker on the spine of the dust jacket. As long as the book is still in decent shape I don‘t mind them. 😊📚 (esp for $2)

Prairiegirl_reading If I buy them I typically read them and then take them to the lfl, don‘t usually keep them. Although it‘s been such a long time since I‘ve been to a library! 3y
Aims42 I do the same as you 👍🏻 Thank God for Goo Gone and hairdryers 😂 3y

marleed I love purchasing used books from libraries. I usually purchase gently used. And I‘ve become an expert at using a hair dryer to disassemble the library glue and plastic. Actually, I think it would be fun to visit the libraries of any time I‘m in and have a collection of discontinued books from each library! 3y
marleed Oh btw, I saw you made your purchase in Austin. The basement of the Central library in San Antonio has an excellent discontinued bookstore. 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I do the same!! 3y
Tamra I do too. 👍🏾 3y
Lcsmcat The Atwood trilogy starts with Oryx & Crake, but I read them inside out and it worked just as well. 3y
Soubhiville @marleed maybe I can make time for that next time I make the trip down to Nowhere Bookshop 🙂 3y
DivineDiana I saw your post after my post for “Prodigal Summer”. It was a used Library book. It is such a pretty book, but I will gift it either to my community Buy Nothing group or a LFL. Just do not have the space for the home library of my dreams. ❤️📚❤️ 3y
Soubhiville @DivineDiana I love dropping a few books in local LFLs. It‘s such a nice feeling passing on the love. I‘m sure someone else will admire it just as much as you did. 🙂 3y

Who knew I had so many purple books!! I‘ve read all of these books except The Jane Austen Book Club And have loved all of them!

My goal is to read the Jane Austen book club once I finished reading all of Jane Austen‘s books. I think I have at least 2 more to read.

Laughterhp @vkois88 My Plain Jane is on my list, but I feel like I should probably read Jane Eyre first to appreciate it! 6y
vkois88 I probably should have.. but I'm enjoying it regardless. I know the basic premise of the original, so it's easy to pick up on. I've been listening to it as I've gone to the gym, and at work. It probably seems strange to people around me bc there are parts that have me actually laughing out loud 😁 6y

A small pick from me. I enjoyed it, but the writing was a bit repetitive, I wanted more details about the world, and it felt a little too long, for me. In spite of that, I did really like the diversity and tolerance shown in the story, and I think a teen would enjoy this a lot!

#BookMail Pt2 I‘ve been eyeing this one for awhile, it‘s been all over Litsy, BookTube & Bookstagram. I love alternate histories, plus the cover is so pretty! I didn‘t realise it at first, but the author also wrote Exit,Pursued By Bear, which is in my #MountTBRShelvesOfDoom. Set in a world where the British Empire still holds sway, Victoria-Margaret is queen-in-training, with 1 year in Canada to be free before being genetically matched & married.

I enjoyed this book and did both the audiobook and regular book reading. It was a different take on Victorian era manners and proceedings in an alternate reality. I preferred listening to the audiobook because the narrator was able to bring the Victorian era into the book for me. Enjoyed that the author was able to also include the LGBTQ community in the series which led to its believability in a more modernized way.

I really enjoyed this story, although I‘m still processing that ending... it was definitely different! I would recommend skipping the audiobook for this and going for s paper copy. The narrator wasn‘t terrible, but she did the most god awful annoying voices for all the children and elderly characters.

This was an interesting premise. A alternate universe UK in which its power has never diminished leading to an incredibly diverse and open-minded world including a bi, POC heir to the throne. Also, there's not a war between science and religion, they actually harmonize. My only issue is that this ended up being more of a love-triangle romance than originally advertised and I was more interested in the alt-universe part. Still really good though!

In an alternate world where the Victorian period endured and expanded, genetic diversity is encouraged, and the heir to the throne is a POC, three people‘s lives become entwined over one unforgettable summer in Canada. For a traditional romance reader like me, this was a three star read because I wasn‘t satisfied with the ending even though I loved most of the story. Includes LGBTQ characters 😊

Finished this in front of the fireplace this morning, trying to warm up. I'm not gonna complain about our -5 degrees C, but.. Okay, maybe a little. 😨❄ Anyway, this one is slow as all get-out until around 55%-ish in, and then it picks up and becomes a neat little thing of friendship, love, families, gender and sexuality. All in all, not what I expected, but I adored it anyway. Also a surprise-book for my #Booked2018 - unconventional romance!

This book was okay, but I feel like it tried to do too much, too fast, and without adequate support from the rest of the story. I liked the premise, the setting, the little homages to Canadian/Ontario life, but the characters fell a bit flat and the end was too convenient. The minor exploration of colonialism, genetics, gender identity and sexuality was done at a disservice to each topic. Too much, too fast, not enough world building.
