Angelfall: Penryn And the End of Days Book 1 | Susan Ee
Its been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back. Anything, including making a deal with Raffe, an injured enemy angel. Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they journey toward the angels stronghold in San Francisco, where Penryn will risk everything to rescue her sister and Raffe will put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again. From Publishers Weekly In Ees gritty debut, which stars a heroine with backbone, angels of the apocalypse seek revenge against humans for killing the Archangel Gabriel, and street gangs have taken over Silicon Valley. Seventeen-year-old Penryn lives with (and cares for) her wheelchair-bound sister, Paige, and their paranoid schizophrenic mother. While attempting to escape their apartment to find safety, Paige is kidnapped by an angel. At the moment of the abduction, Penryn meets Raffe, an angel whose wings have been cut off by the angels who take Paige. Hoping Raffe might know where Paige is, Penryn reluctantly nurses him back to health, and the two join forces, traveling to the angels aerie in San Francisco to recover Paige and repair Raffes wings; along the way, they are captured by a dangerously anarchic army of the human resistance. Smartly conceived details (for example, theres a bounty on angel body parts, turning them into a commodity) feel fresh in this apocalyptic romance thats sustained by well-developed characters, atmosphere, and strong writing. Ee leaves plenty to discover in a planned sequel. Ages 14up. Publisher's Weekly August 2012 From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up-Six weeks ago, the apocalypse began with angels coming down from heaven, killing and terrorizing humans in revenge for their killing the Archangel Gabriel and taking over the world. Now, 17-year-old Penryn, her wheelchair-bound sister Paige, and their schizophrenic mother are trying to survive in a world taken over by vigilantes and angels. When Paige is kidnapped by warrior angels, Penryn makes a deal with an injured enemy angel to help her find her sister. Susan Ee has spun a gripping tale (Amazon Children's Pub., 2012) that will rivet listener and narrator Caitlin Davies gives each character a distinct voice. A fine addition to school and public library collections.-Elizabeth L Kenyon, Merrillville High School, IN?(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition. From Booklist Theres no real setup here. On the opening pages, 17-year-old Penryn is trying to hustle her wheelchair-bound little sister and her schizophrenic mother out of their Bay Area condo to some safe area where the angels of the apocalypse wont destroy them, as theyve been doing to others worldwide for the last six weeks. The getaway doesnt work so well. Penryns sister, Paige, is grabbed by the angels, right after a band of them slits off another angels soft, white wings. Against her better judgment, Penryn saves Raff (well, he is quite handsome) on the condition that hell at least put her in the direction of Paige. So begins a dangerous trip into San Francisco; along the way, the two have to avoid marauders, escape a resistance groups camp, and keep away from the cannibals. Information about the angels is dispensed miserly, but the action never stops, with some new horror just around the corner. The main characters, including Penryns mother, all intrigue, so the sequel will be welcome. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper Review "Dark, romantic, and compulsively readable Penryn and the End of Days offers readers a new breed of angels to love and fear. I am officially obsessed." Kami Garcia, #1 New York Times bestselling coauthor of Beautiful Creatures & author of UnbreakableSusan is a brilliant writer. She has created a fantastic world with instantly engaging and real characters. Sam Raimi, director/producer/writer"Slick, fast, and hip will appeal to fans of The Hunger Games and Twilight" Guardian"What if angels weren't the good guys we thought them to be? Susan Ee's beautifully written debut follows Penryn, a 17-year-old trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic California ravaged by angels. When her sister is kidnapped, Penryn must rescue her with the help of an injured angel named Raffe. Action-packed and genuinely terrifying, Angelfall is a must-read. And the chemistry between Penryn and Raffe? Let's just say angels are the new vampires." Tara Fowler, Entertainment Weekly online 2012

I really enjoyed Angelfall and I think it was a great start for the trilogy. It is considered a YA dystopian and as you can guess involves angels. There was a lot of ground to cover getting the characters and plots set up so it's a fast paced book. Angelfall is set around a teen girl named Penryn that's only current mission is to save her little sister from the bad guys.

Continued in comments

RedxoHearts A group of the angels stole her sister Paige from her wheelchair while they were trying to get away. After the fight Penryn stops to help the angel Raffe who is the other prominent character. Even just within the first book they are met with some big challenges including being held by the human resistance. 2w
RedxoHearts I think that Susan Ee does a great job with setting the scenes and bringing it to life in the reader's mind. Without spoiling too much the scenes involving a lab setup towards the end were super creepy and dark. It was an interesting direction to go but I think it was the perfect choice. I can't wait to find out what happens next 2w

Whoa. This was so good!!! Disturbing at the end for sure, but such a great read. A dystopian, post-apocalyptic world terrorized by angels. I should not of put off reading this. It's been one of my kindle unlimited books that that I've marked to read for a long time and kept passing over. I don't recommend the audio version. I switched over to try it out, and immediately switched back to reading.
A quick one day fast-paced read! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I loved Raffe & Penryn, it's always awesome when characters are likable. I also liked how Penryn had quite rough past and life with her family wasn't easy. I really loved their chemistry & banter.

Unbelievable but I loved the atmosphere even more! It was everything I could have imagined and a bit more. It was horrid, a bit gore, dangerous, creepy, dark!

This was really intriguing adventure, even though I hated how the ending left so much open.

TheSpineView Not a fan of cliffhangers. Well done! 2y

For the year 2011 I selected this title for the 40 year reading challenge. I‘ve gotta say it was good but not amazing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Not sure why I didn‘t fully connect with this one. Oh well if you want an apocalyptic read this one is for you! #19822022 @Librarybelle

I found this book slightly bonkers and more graphic then I thought it would be at times. But I loved a dystopian where the end of the world event just happened rather than so long ago that no one remembers anything. It was nice to learn along with the main character what was going on. Also it felt like the YA angst was at a minimum, and the world building just starting so I‘ll definitely read the rest of the series.

Asthecroweflies I‘ve been wanting to read this. 4y

This was so good, I've just ordered the rest of the series! It was a bit slow going at first but then it suddenly picked up the pace, the chactuers were really cool and there was a lot of world building. Overall I really enjoyed this book, especially the slow burn romance!

Yeah, this book was not great. It started out really good and interesting ... and went entirely downhill from there. File under “baffled by the hype.”

A little more than halfway through and this book is so MEH. I wish the protagonist had an actual personality. I‘ll finish it but it will take a lot to get me to give it s more than MEH rating. We shall see.

So like, idk why I put book pages on my face... art?? 😅😅

Side note, I absolutely love the Angefall series!! The first book was my favourite but the last two kept up the action and fulfilled my angel craving immensely! This series doesn‘t get enough hype as it should. Have you read it? What did you think?

The angels from above take over Earth in this dystopian book #1. 17 year old Penryn travels with an Angel who‘s wings were cut off by angels in an angel fight. As I write this I know this sounds weird but I really liked this book and will read the other 2 in the trilogy. #Angelfight!

All in all, I stand by my initial review. Penryn/Raffe are intriguing characters, & I enjoyed their relationship. Angel politics is fascinating, but we don‘t get to that until the last third of the book! Too much time is wasted on the characters trekking through deserted California. We don‘t need an account of every sigh & leaf crunch, y‘know? Still, this is a really promising start to a fun fantasy/dystopian adventure. ★★★☆☆.

I really loved this book! It kept me interested from the first sentence to the last. I love the main character, Penryn (love that name!!). She is tough, independent, smart. A great main character. I‘m excited to see what develops between her and Raffe. On to the 2nd book! I hope the amazingness continues in the series.
