kspenmoll I am up early for a weekend- 5:30- this is a lovely spot to say Happy Saturday all! My day is meeting an old friend for coffee, errands, laundry(porch pillows, slowly putting porch items away), a walk, then hoping for a night of reading. Right now I am enjoying my first cup of coffee, oatmeal with milk & maple syrup, with Emmy curled up on my lap. 📘☕️🥣🐾 I wish everyone a wonderful day. (edited) 1w
kspenmoll @Sace I get it! Sipping mine now!☕️ 1w

Sace @kspenmoll Sounds like you have a busy day ahead. I only have the grocery store and lunch with my husband in the to do list. Dewey‘s 24 hour readathon starts at 7 my time so I‘m hoping to get a long stretch of reading in. I won‘t make 24 hours but I‘ll get *some* reading in. 1w
Librarybelle Happy Saturday! I‘m getting over a cold, so moving a little slow this weekend. I have my usual cleaning routine plus a few other things to take care of that cropped up. But, like @Sace , I hope to do some reading for the Dewey readathon today. 1w
AllDebooks @Sace ☕️👌Soynds like you have a blissful day planned. Enjoy your lunch x 1w
AllDebooks @kspenmoll putting away the outdoor furniture is the only thing I don't like about autumn. It's far too damp here to leave it. We have mist or fog most mornings. Enjoy your reading. x 1w
AllDebooks @Librarybelle plenty of rest and readibg shoukd set you right. Feel better x 1w
Librarybelle Thanks, @AllDebooks ! ❤️ 1w
AllDebooks I'm actually feeling very sorry for myself. Just spent 3 months getting better and starting to feel more like myself. I've now got shingles! MOTHERTRUCKER!!!🤬 I would be grateful for any distraction from the pain as it's a bloomin big ouchy. Any recs? 1w
AllDebooks On the plus side, I've had plenty of reading time. Just need to catch up on my scores now for #HauntedShelf 1w
AllDebooks Atm, I'm really enjoying my #letterZ choice for #AtoZReadathon 1w
Daisey It‘s a beautiful fall weekend here, and I‘m so happy to be home for the day. I‘m enjoying coffee and breakfast casserole with my Litsy scrolling. 1w
Sace @AllDebooks oh dear lord that sounds awful. I have no words of wisdom or advice but plenty of sympathy. 1w
Sace @Daisey that sounds lovely. 1w
Sace @AllDebooks thanks! We have a favorite Thai restaurant that we go to every Saturday. 1w
Cuilin @AllDebooks oh sorry Deb that‘s awful. Ugh I have been listening to BBC‘s radio plays Rumpole. They‘re such a good balance of light and fun with a little sprinkling of mystery. I‘ve been listening to them last thing at night, delightful. I‘m almost done and I will definitely miss them. I found them on Audible but they‘re probably on BBC player or something. Oh, and some of them are played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Hope you feel better soon. X 1w
AllDebooks @Cuilin thanks, that sounds perfect. I'll check it out. x 1w
dabbe So sorry to read about your shingles, @AllDebooks. I hope your reading is providing plenty of distraction. 🖤🧡🖤 Today in Phoenix, it will be 96º F (36º C), so we're STILL staying inside and relaxing after our relaxing week up in pine country. Hoping for a power day tomorrow, though. Hope everyone has a lovely day--whatever you're doing! 🤩 7d
julieclair Ugh… shingles! I have heard they are just miserable. Sure do hope you get over them quickly. My only recommendation would be audiobooks. I find I get less distracted with them than I do with regular books. 💙💙💙 5d

Pickpick

fantastical & mystical I picked this up as i needed ‘a book about a city‘ & it was recommended. It‘s a special, beautiful odd book. A story about a demon who claims a city for her own, growing it over decades & blessing or cursing its people & what happen when it is destroyed by 3 angels - one of whom she curses in her rage. As she mourns & grieves & remembers, the angel returns to her over decades as she (they) build the city once more. ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader I loved the language & story itself - at times it feels like a fairy tale, sometimes an ancient myth & very occasionally a dark romance. I loved the city; the sense of its history and ultimately its future. I loved Vitrine - a selfish but invested demon with deep grief. In the moment I wished there was more about the angel and some of the people in the city but this is not really their story. 1w

I was more invested in Liraz & Ziri than Karou & Akiva. That was a bit shame because this book was more about K & A than L & Z.

This book dragged, a lot. I was waiting for something to happen and at the end realized how this book never delivered what I had expected.

POV changed in every chapter and that cut the flow of the story continually.

Another book where the packaging is even better than the contents within. The premise of this one is fantastic—a demon has mothered/raised/built the city of Azril & then one day, four angels come & destroy it & its population. Furious & mad with grief, the demon curses the angel locking them into a cycle of grief, recrimination, obsession & more. Unfortunately, the character development & plot weren‘t as good as the premise.

In this new standalone novel, Hugo Award-winning author Nghi Vo introduces a beguiling fantasy city in the tradition of Calvino, Mieville, and Le Guin.

A demon. An angel. A city.

The demon Vitrine—immortal, powerful, and capricious—loves the dazzling city of Azril. She has mothered, married, and maddened the city and its people for generations, and built it into a place of joy and desire, revelry and riot.
