I will turn 50 in 2025 and to celebrate I pulled 50 books from my unread shelves. These are books that I have always wanted to read or are from my favorite authors but for whatever reason have gone unread. What am I waiting for?! This is the year. The tagged will be the first. #sundayfunday

Here's an example of a book that gets lots of hype and seems to be very much at the top of the recommendation lists, but was just meh for me. I found the parallels between Atwood's distopian future and our current times rather terrifying in many ways; however, as far as the storyline goes I guess I was expecting more. Not sure what that would be exactly, just that as a whole it fell a little flat. Still glad I read it though. #audiobook

So not a fan of book banning! Lots of these I haven‘t heard of, but the number of kids books on this list is astounding, yet not at all surprising. I‘ve always let my girls read anything they were interested in reading, just as my parents did with me when I was growing up.

An important and terrifying book right now because it is so topical! But I don‘t think there will ever be a time this won‘t be controversial, because a story where a repressive counter-regime has both already risen and fallen in recent memory is always going to imply a vague threat to both “sides” of the political divide.
“When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.”

pickQuite a chilling tale of a possible future dystopia from the viewpoint of a handmaid, Offred (belonging to Fred). Womens rights are greatly restricted and some men are in total control. I haven't seen the movie or the TV series but I have looked at the recent graphic novel. I recommend it for open-minded adults or older teens. Reminds me of 1984 a bit.
Starting this book that is often banned. I haven‘t seen any of the modern TV series but I know a little bit about it. Hope it never comes to be!

I just rewatched season 1 of the screen adaption of The Handmaid‘s Tale and I have to say, there is some serious sh*t going on in the US today that uncomfortably resembles Atwood‘s dystopia. On multiple fronts. 🥹

I was at the hairdresser yesterday and they had Monocle issue 164, June 2023, art special, inside they had an interview with Atwood, and it says:
“The American Library Association lists The Handmaid‘s Tale as one of the country‘s most regularly banned books; to illustrate the point, Penguin Random House even produced a special edition of the novel made from fireproof paper and filmed the author blasting it with a frame-thrower.”
I had no idea.

Good news: I‘m finally reading this after owning it for 5+ years. This is actually the second copy I‘ve purchased, after giving the first unread copy to a friend. 😅 I demolished the first half of it all in one go last night. Such an addictive and chilling read. 🖤

I have a weakness for epistolary novels, but I sometimes forget that in addition to the traditional exchange of #letters💌 they also include a whole range of other forms of documents and communications. I think it‘s fascinating that the tagged book (one of my favorite of all time) makes lists of epistolary novels, when you don‘t learn till the epilogue that it‘s being told as one. #MayMontage @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
I think today is a day for another #unpopularopinion I read The Handmaid‘s Tale when it was first published. Actually, I only tried to read it. If I had known what #DNF meant back then that‘s what I did. It seems like everyone thinks this is one of the greatest books ever written. I understand that it was groundbreaking. It seems more prescient now than ever. But I just didn‘t like the book. I‘ve never read another #MargaretAtwood book. (cont)⬇️

pickOne of the most beautifully illustrated graphic novels that I have read in a long time. As disturbing as the story is and consequently the illustrations, one cannot help but enjoy the artwork. I hope to see more of Renée Nault‘s work in the near future.

Took myself on a field trip today to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. I was tickled to see this addition to the culture section at the National History Museum.
pickI love bookshelves with free but used books, a treasure chest for bookworms. I found this one and what an incredible book, everything so vividly described, I felt like I was there, in this horrifying world. Terrifying, dark, and emotional story of a woman trapped in an unthinkable situation and all her memories and desires to reunite with her family makes this a must read book for everybody.
pickThis is the 3rd time I have read this book and each time a different memory of the book stays with me. The 1st time, it was the horror of the breeding ceremony. I was a teenager at the time. The 2nd time, I convinced myself of a ending/storyline that isn‘t in the book. Now this 3rd time; I‘m reading it as one of the banned books on this season of Book Interrupted and realizing how scary the potential of something like this actually happening is.
pickPhenomenal! Amazing how Margaret Atwood created a dystopian novel like this. Such a creative mind! And to think the book was published in the 80s. Her views of the future is still appropriate even today.

pickThoughts: TERRIFYING. I am not a huge fan of dystopian novels for that one word: terrifying. As someone who prefers film noir about stories in the past, seeing what the future might hold is frightening. Atwood has a way of making me care, and Offred was stunningly portrayed as the complex character she is: she goes along with society but shuns it inwardly. A must read in today's crazy world.
