I have to say I am bit annoyed of the repetition of the short introduction of the different characters at the beginning of each book of the Nancy Drew series. A few lines further along Bess and George are described again and shortly Nancy‘s first and latest adventure are mentioned. And somewhere in the book Bess is shamed for her eating habits at least once as well. 🙄🙄🙄

JenlovesJT47 They do this in Sweet Valley books as well. I think it‘s for those who haven‘t read the previous books. I agree it can be tiresome. I just finished the 4th Nancy Drew book so I haven‘t seen Bess or George yet but the early Sweet Valley books did a lot of fat shaming as well. 😳 4d

I see that I‘m not the only one that recently finished this instalment for the #NancyDrewBR. 😅 And from the reviews of others, I‘m also not the only one that gives this a weak thumbs up. Of all the books so far, this one seems the most far fetched. The story kept my interest, but some things seemed just strange and pointless. Like the jealousy subplot, what was that about? Still, I give this 3/5⭐️ for nostalgia‘s sake.

My least favorite Nancy Drew book of the series so far. It just felt very ridiculous and unlikely. I also don‘t think the ebook was 100% accurate. I felt like I was missing something or there were typos and stuff. Hopefully the next one is better.

I enjoyed the book‘s setting on an archeological dig sponsored by a local college.Enjoyed farmer Clem & the fact the girls boyfriends played a bigger role this time. More knocks on the head, a goat, treasure hunt,a college student with a motorcycle smitten with Nancy. Between a Pick & a So-So.

Like many of the other buddy readers, I found this one to be one of the weaker entries of the series so far. The plot felt jumbled and unrealistic (more so than usual haha) and the whole “jealousy“ side line definitely felt like padding. Definitely not my favorite.

If this had been the first Nancy Drew I read, I'm not sure I would've tried another one. The mystery feels so pointless. Random dangerous things keep happening, with no effect on the plot, so it's just, "Oh no! But it's fine!" The villain is straight out of Scooby Doo. There's an unnecessary side plot where a boy has a crush on Nancy and she seems, at worst, mildly inconvenienced by it. Oh, and Nancy digs up a baby's grave. Hard pass on all that.

I'd read both the 1935 and 1972 versions of this book for #NancyDrewBR. The two stories were completely different, the first set in the Canadian North and the second at an archeological dig in Ohio. I much preferred the 1935 version, which had more action and a somewhat more plausible storyline.

5. Every month, we talk about the dangers and adventures that Nancy and her friends face. The 1972 edition had a goat hit Nancy‘s head (not a danger per se, but an unexpected moment). I shuddered when Nancy fell into the quarry.

Sace The car flipping over in the river was a little shocking. 1mo

DGRachel I was disappointed the goat didn‘t actually knock her out. I was all excited to add to the #NNK count. The fall into the quarry was terrifying and I did not expect the car flip, either. 1mo

DGRachel Oh! I nearly forgot about George‘s fall of the boat between the barges. That was just as scary as Nancy falling into the quarry. I hope these kids are up to date on tetanus shots! 1mo

Bookwormjillk The train wreck in the 1935 edition was pretty thrilling. There was also a scene when Nancy flirted with a guy to get a key to a shack. I'm not sure 1960's 1970's Nancy would have done that. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement Yes, all good points. One other thing I got hung up on in this story was they don't seem all that worried about Bob. They take care of other errands, etc instead of focussing on finding him. Rude! Then when they find him after days of foul treatment, instead of feeding him & cleaning him up & allowing him to rest, he & Burt are in charge of driving the kidnappers to the authorities. @dabbe @Ruthiella @DGRachel @Sace @Bookwormjillk 1mo

kwmg40 I thought there was much more danger and excitement in the 1935 story, from the train wreck early in the book to Nancy setting off explosives at the end. 1mo

lauraisntwilder These incidents normally seem important to the plot, but a giant log flew through the window while they ate dinner and they just cleaned it up and went on with the weird plot of Art being jealous. What was the point of Nancy getting stuck in the elevator?? I normally enjoy the silliness of these books, but this one didn't work for me. 1mo

MariaW I wondered whether the „new“ elevator being stuck is some sort of hidden criticism regarding new technology. And the moment the entered the quarry suspecting something might be hidden at the bottom of the lake, it was clear that somewhat would somehow have to check it. I just did not expect it to be an accident. I have to say I am becoming somewhat inured to the dangers now because they all end well and/or seem to repeat themselves. 5d

DGRachel I think the mean girl was thrown in there as a red herring. I kept waiting for her to be in cahoots with Kit Kadle. I didn‘t like the jealousy storyline (dude, you just met Nancy. Did you not think to ask if she was single before you got all possessive?), but I did like Ned‘s “swell gal” of a cousin. The head of the dig was questionable-untrained people I just met want to dig? Sure! Come trample sacred ground with us! 1mo

DGRachel I also really liked that farmer guy whose name escapes me, that drove them through all the backcountry in his ancient vehicle that was apparently amphibious and the tow boat captain. 1mo

Bookwormjillk Carson Drew was in Canada with Nancy in the 1935 edition. He's different though- much more hands on than in the later versions. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement About Art - I hope young readers are paying attention to how easily Art was pointed in the direction of another young, smart, attractive girl and he easily became most fond of her rather than Nancy. Exactly. I thought that was one of the most realistic happenings in this tale! 1mo

kwmg40 I too missed Carson Drew in the 1972 edition but he does have a significant role in the 1935 edition. I liked many of the supporting characters in the 1935 version but didn't think much of the jealousy storyline in the 1972 version. 1mo

dabbe And what about these NYC detectives? Just upon hearing Nancy's aunt say, “Hey, Nancy could solve that,“ and you go and tell her everything and give her the so-called case? Then the diggers say, “Sure, come join us!“ without Nancy having any expertise--which actually was surprising since she's our female MacGyver. And while I'm at it, why aren't she, Bess, and George in college? Their boyfriends are! How about detective school? 😀 1mo

bookandbedandtea I'm always surprised (as an adult reader) that various police departments and professionals are so ready for Nancy to investigate and join in working at any number of jobs which should require education and training. None of that ever bothered me as a kid though! 😉 1mo

2. The 1935 edition is the first time Nancy travels outside the US. Not only is Nancy chased by men in search of the gold rumored to be on her property in Canada, but an author she meets asks her to deliver messages to loved ones.

bookandbedandtea I can't say I knew anything about the Canadian gold rush but, as @BarkingMadRead mentioned, this story certainly seems in line with other stories about riches being found and possession being 9/10ths of the law. 1mo

kwmg40 Being a Canadian, I did know something about the history of the gold rush. I tried to find out more about the setting but I couldn't figure out where “Lake Wellington“ was located, as there were few details provided. I was amused by the fact the references to Canada making it sound like it was all forests and mountains with rugged people living in log cabins! 😂 1mo

MariaW While traveling Canada for three months I came across the information of the gold rush. And there are a lot TV shows regarding the search for gold nowadays, like Yukon Gold, which my partner watches frequently. 🙄 5d

1. Once again, we have two very different plot lines for this month's book.

In the 1935 edition, Nancy travels to Canada after winning a suspicious contest. In the 1972 revision, Nancy visits an archaeological dig site in Illinois via a request from a NYC detective.

Sace I read the 1972 edition. As I said in my review, this one was a bit of a slog for me. It just wasn‘t that interesting. 1mo

Bookwormjillk I‘m almost done with the 1935 edition. It started off with a bang (literally- there was a train crash) but now they‘ve been in the woods forever and I am also finding it to be a slog. Hopefully I‘ll finish at lunch. 1mo

Ruthiella Such huge differences in the editions! Nancy and the oak seem to be the only common denominators! 😅 I read the 1972 version. It was fine. I try to read these uncritically - different times and different intended audience. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement I read 1972. When we start off with Nancy being stuck in a broken down elevator for absolutely no reason. I hoped that was not a sign of things to come, but it kinda was. George falling into the water was silly, and Nancy didn't really seem to have any reason to fall into the quarry. It didn't even have her uncover a clue or anything. Eh. 1mo

bookandbedandtea The 1938 version had Nancy behaving/responding a little differently than I'm used to. She was still brave & moral but her focus was less on solving mysteries (though she did some of that) & more about protecting her land & the gold on it. Usually Nancy is completely indifferent to material gain but she was intent on her rights & ownership in this one. Not that she should allow herself to be swindled! But this was a different Nancy IMO. 1mo

kwmg40 I finished both versions and I liked the 1938 version much better. There was more intense action, more interesting characters and fewer moments where I had to completely suspend my disbelief. I agree with @bookandbedandtea that Nancy seemed a tougher character than in the later books. 1mo

I missed Carson Drew and Hannah in this one! Nancy is in search of a hidden treasure in an oak in Illinois that NYC detectives (yeah, kind of a weird plot line) could not find. There‘s a goat, talk of pirates and ghosts, an archaeological dig of Native American burial mounds, and a shady guy who is out to get Nancy. Not the strongest in the series, but a breeze to read. I‘m giving this one a pick with serious reservations. The mystery itself, finding an unknown object in an unknown oak tree, was fun. The desecration of Native American burial grounds? Not so much. I‘m also pretty anti-angst in most of what I read, so the jealousy subplot was annoying and the damage to old oak trees was heartbreaking to read. I also think we should add at least a 1/2 count to #NNK thanks to the goat. 😂 #nancydrewbr

Finished #12 last night for #NancyDrewBR this was on my #HauntedShelf TBR & really, the cover is the spookiest thing about this one. Nancy ends up going to Illinois to a college archeology dig site to solve a centuries-old mystery that a bunch of professional detectives couldn‘t solve because she‘s Nancy Drew. This one was fine, probably not my favorite but ⬇️

When NYC detectives can't find treasure missing in a hollow oak in Illinois buried by a missionary, Nancy is given the case due to her aunt knowing one of the detectives. If you've ever heard the words “Indian burial ground“, then you get the idea. Only one #nogginknockout for Nancy that I found, and that was due to a goat's passion for cookies. #NancyDrewBR

I loved learning that whirlybird was apparently slang for helicopters when this book was written. How cute is that?! Of course, reflecting the time period, super problematic handling of Native American/American Indian burial grounds in an anthropological dig, but that‘s to be expected.
