My first thought for #FolsomPrisonBlues was The Green Mile, but @Eggs beat me to it. So I'm going with the second book that popped in my head.
#VolumesAndVocals
Never watched the Netflix series, but when I came across the book in Goodwill I figured 'Why not?'
The biggest impression it made on me was to wonder if Teresa Guidice's book was similar bc they both served in Danbury, or if there was a little ....um, "borrowing" happening.
#MarchMagic #AdaptedToNetflixSeries
A story of finding humanity in an inhumane environment. Interesting perspective, though not a very exciting account of prison life.
Super late to the party with this one, but thoroughly enjoyed this memoir about Kerman‘s brief, delayed incarceration. Orange is the New Black is a thoughtful examination of some of the flaws in the prison system in the United States. Kerman narrative her story with humour and thoughtfulness. I appreciated that she acknowledges how her privileges continued to benefit her while incarcerated and in the transition back to life beyond prison.
March 23 #SavvySettings Prison I have not read the book. I have watched a few seasons of the TV series @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks
Let me start by saying that the show is an oversexualised and unnecessarily dramatic mess compared to the genuinely amazing, if sometimes unpleasant, journey that Piper went through in her time in prison. The way she talks about the things that she witnessed, learned and took from her time 'locked up' are inspiring, and I am so grateful that she shared her perspective with the world.
A fantastic read for anybody!
I listened to just over half of this audiobook before the library took it back... I don't feel the need to renew it. I haven't watched the show, so I had no real expectations for the book. It wasn't bad, it was just...meh.
I never watched the show (I don't have Netflix), so I had literally no idea what the story would be about. I'm so glad I read this book! I loved getting to know the people that Piper met and her impressions of things. In a weird way, this was a relatable book for me. I want to watch the show now too.
The book funeral scene in Orange is the New Black. 📚😢
Our current criminal justice system has no provision for restorative justice, in which an offender confronts the damage they have done and tries to make it right to the people they have harmed. Instead, our system of “corrections” is about arms-length revenge & retribution, all day & all night. Then its overseers wonder why people leave prison more broken than when they went in.
Perfect evening on the balcony
Beginning Monday with chores and a sobering life story. 🧺
If you want to know the kind of insufferable person I am, in 2013 I watched the first season of OITNB before I realized it was a book and never watched another episode. I guess I‘m allowed to keep watching it now 😂 #BookSpin
This has been on my TBR for a long time. I‘m not sure what made me pick it up, but it was pretty good. I remember when it came out going and listening to the author speak. Much of what she said came back to me while reading. My main takeaway is how ineffective the system is at helping offenders with what comes next. They seem to be left largely to their own defenses, which I find inexcusable. I found her descriptions of friendship very touching.
My brother brought Ginger to visit me at work. 😍 We finished Orange is the New Black together while I powered through taxes. I likes the book so much more than the show. Piper is so much more likable and everything is more meaningful and less sensationalized. I was actually sad when the book ended, unlike the show.
Read this last year and found it very interesting. I loved the show and I was sad to see it end, but reading the real story gave me a completely different view.
Finally put up the Halloween decks! 🎃🍁👻 #chillingphotochallenge #orange #scarathlon #teamstoker
Book is like the opposite of #oitnb still interesting.
Not a great picture I know but it's a hat with leaf motif!

Post catchup #1
I really didn't like Piper, I can't pinpoint why exactly, something just seemed off.
This was very different from the tv show in a wonderful way. I feel this was much more realistic than the show.
#readharder task 20: a book written in prison
Book 1 of 12 for #bookfitnesschallenger3
@Aprilmae @wanderinglynn
Read Harder 2019 has a book written in prison as task 20 and it took me far too long to realize this was the perfect book for me to accomplish this task. ⠀
It's a really good memoir that talks about Kerman's crime and the legal process and being in the prison system. I never watched the show, except the pilot episode, but I really appreciate Kerman sharing her story.
#LilithJuly #criminal #JulyColdPlay #dontpanic
Imagining that Piper may have felt like a #criminal to her fiancé when her drug smuggling life catches up to her & she ultimately ends up serving time in prison. #dontpanic-her family & fiancé are supportive of her through this time.
Here is my pick for orange and black for the color me pretty challenge. The kid in me went right to Tony the tiger when i hear today's color. And for book wise, i thought of Orange Is The New Black. I haven't read it, but have seen a few episodes. I loved this quote when i saw it searching for the image of the book. Hope you enjoy. #OrangeAndBlack. #colormepretty @Sweetkokoro
The Netflix‘s original, inspired by the story of Piper Kerman is good on its own. However the book tells a completely different and more powerful story. While the TV series adds a ton of drama to stretch time and keep people interested, Ms Kerman tells a more honest and enlightening story. The book was so compelling, and I feel like I have a whole new look on the American Prison system.
A Book that has been converted into a TV Show: Orange is the New Black! I‘ve actually only ever watched the first season, but I really enjoyed it. I‘m excited to actually read the book that inspired it!
#croatianedition#readingchallange2019#memoir
#MusicalNewYear #CellBlockTango I only watched season one of Orange but it was enough to make me pick up the memoir which I enjoyed. I‘m always fascinated by people‘s such obvious poor choices ( I know, hindsight) but sometimes you just know something is off( intuition). Have not seen the musical or the film.
I read this memoir in 15-20 minute increments during lunch at work. Piper gets involved with an older woman who makes oodles of money via drug trafficking. Piper transports drug money, once, and ends up in a legal quagmire that ends in jail. A very interesting read. I really liked her descriptions of her time in prison. I may have to watch the Netflix series. I gave the book to a coworker so here‘s a photo of my friend ‘s beauty berry.
This is a great example of the adaptation being better than the book. I was totally put off by the memoir bc I thought Piper was clearly benefitting from white privilege, and she made me 🙄. On the show she still makes me 🙄, but there are so many other amazing characters to balance her out. I‘m really enjoying the latest season.
I appreciate how Kerman accepted the consequences for her crime and didn't spend a lot of time in the book feeling sorry for herself. I think she also brought up some important issues with our justice and prison systems, but only at a shallow, surface-level. I just didn't quite know how to take some of the situations, like where she was eating a foie gras sandwich while waiting for her intake into prison.
#ReadingResolutions #jail @Jess7
Haven't read the memoir but have seen the show, have to catch up in the new season still. Photo on left is of the real life Piper the author & the actress who plays her in Netflix series.
Not sure if it would have been more enjoyable if I hadn‘t watched the series first and had less expectations?
Audiobook narrators usually don't get the praise that they deserve, so let me say that Cassandra Campbell does a terrific job reading this one. I listened to the book because people keep comparing it to #TheMarsRoom, but while I command Kerman for her activism regarding prison reform, I have to say that this book is not particularly well-written. #RachelKushner plays in another league! #indiebuddyreads
Yes, I am ignoring my books to eat spinach and artichoke dip pizza for breakfast and watch OITNB. Don‘t @ me with your judgment!
1 day!!
