La nueva novela del creador de Downton Abbey. Muy cerca de Buckingham Palace, tras las puertas de las grandes mansiones del Londres victoriano, reinan el escndalo y la intriga. Bienvenidos a Belgravia. On the evening of 15 June 1815, the great and the good of British society have gathered in Brussels at what is to become one of the most tragic parties in history - the Duchess of Richmond's ball. For this is the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, and many of the handsome young men attending the ball will find themselves, the very next day, on the battlefield. For Sophia Trenchard, the young and beautiful daughter of Wellington's chief supplier, this night will change everything. But it is only twenty-five years later, when the upwardly mobile Trenchards move into the fashionable new area of Belgravia, that the true repercussions of that moment will be felt. For in this new world, where the aristocracy rub shoulders with the emerging nouveau riche, there are those who would prefer the secrets of the past to remain buried...

Historical novels are one of my fav genres so this book was right up my alley. The story revolves around two families, their various intrigues, and the things that unite them. As I got deeper into the book, I had a harder time putting it down. I needed to find out what was going to happen! And I wasn‘t disappointed. 5/5⭐️

My thanks to @Librarybelle for providing the motivation I needed to finally read this book!

6. The Duchess of Richmond's Ball before the Battle of Waterloo is true!

Not a question, but some information about the ball can be found here (including some of the dresses worn by the ladies at the ball): https://ageofrevolution.org/200-object/brown-silk-dress/

5. If you have watched Downton Abbey, can you make any connections to Belgravia? Are there any similar characters or themes? ~adapted from Provo Library

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

BethM It‘s a much slower start but I think the drama and intrigue are similar in style. I really enjoyed that part once the book got going. 3y
Jerdencon I did watch downtown abbey and loved it… I saw a similarity in how the staff are so enmeshed in the rich peoples lives. 3y
CarolineLovesToRead I‘ve never seen the show but am interested in starting it now that I‘ve read this. Just so many shows that I‘m watching 😕 3y
kspenmoll Similarity in class issues, societal constraints on women no matter what class, staff enmeshed in the lives of the rich they serve as @Jerdencon pointed out. 3y

4. Secrets is a huge theme in this novel. A lot of family drama is brought on by people hiding the truth. There's people who keep secrets, people who try to uncover them, and people who make new ones. Who do you think is impacted the most by these secrets? ~adapted from Provo Library

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

BethM Oof what a hard question. I‘d say Charles, but the grandparents were all also significantly impacted especially when you figure in grief. 3y
Jerdencon I would say Charles too - as he is completely ignorant of what is going on with him as the central secret. 3y
BookNAround They‘re all impacted in different but equally important ways. 3y
CarolineLovesToRead I agree with @BookNAround they are all impacted 3y
kspenmoll Definitely Charles- he lost so much. But all were impacted in different ways for different reasons. It‘s amazing how a “secret” can reach its tentacles & grasp later generations in significant ways. 3y

2. What do you think of Susan? Do you feel badly for her or do you think she is just as conniving as Oliver? What do you think of her “secret?“ ~from Provo Library

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

BethM Oh she‘s far more manipulative. Far more. I really didn‘t care for her but I cheered for Anne and how she engineered things at the end. 3y
Jerdencon At first I hated her but at the end was happy with how she manuerved things. 3y
BookNAround She was thoroughly dislikable but you had to feel a bit sorry for her in the end when John just laughed at her. And how she and Anne worked things at the end was pragmatic and impressive really. 3y
PurpleyPumpkin I did not like Susan one bit at the beginning of the book. She seemed so self-centred. But, by the end of the story, she had deftly carved out a life for herself. She made the best of a very bad marriage. (edited) 3y
kspenmoll Susan was not a character easy to like. She was self serving, but rather sad. But in the end she did try her best with a bad marriage. 3y

#1 Do you think Anne and James should protect Sophia's secret or should they come out with it if Lady Brockenhurst does as well? What would you do? ~from Provo Library

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

BethM I would‘ve come@out with it but I can see where that would be hard given the time. 3y
Jerdencon I would have come out with it but I understood they were concerned given the tune they were living in. 3y
BookNAround Given that even so many years after Sophia‘s death, she would have been condemned for a lack of moral character and the way that society punished whole families for scandals, I don‘t think they should have shared the “truth” while they thought Charles was illegitimate. James would lose any business he was associated with and it would have possibly dragged the whole family into penury. (edited) 3y
See All 6 Comments
PurpleyPumpkin I'm such a private person to begin with, so I would probably keep Sophia's secret. Add to that the period, and there's little doubt that I wouldn't share Sophia's story. After all, she can no longer tell her side. Also, and I feel unjustly, but those were the times, the family would definitely suffer dreadfully! 3y
CarolineLovesToRead Yes. They should protect the secret. Nothing good would come from it. Exactly what @PurpleyPumpkin mentions. The family would suffer. 3y
kspenmoll Agree with protecting her secret, especially as @PurpleyPumpkin said, given the time period. 3y

CoverToCoverGirl Loved that book and have the series recorded. 4y
CrowCAH @rubyslippersreads two episodes in and I‘m hooked! Julian Fellows is a superb screenwriter; he even did the whole upstairs downstairs scenario, like Downton Abbey. 4y
CrowCAH @CoverToCoverGirl I haven‘t read the book, but my Mom had. She says it‘s very similar, though a couple items on the timeline were rearranged. But Fellows wrote both the book and screenplay, so he can do what he wants with his own content. 4y

I finished this a few weeks ago, but didn‘t post about it. This was a lovely - and lively! - period story with a very satisfying story arc. I do love a happy ending. Same absorbing storytelling that kept me hooked on Downton Abbey. If you‘re watching the Belgravia series on Epix, it is very true to the book, and equally lovely. I was sorry to get to the end of this book. It reminded me of Jane Austen, whose stories I also love.

This book was an average read for me. I liked the 19th century royal setting. I struggled reading the first half of the book but the story picked up some pace in the second half.
Does anyone else feel that you have to get to the end of the book once you've picked it up or is it just me??

Buechersuechtling No, I feel this way sometimes, too. Especially when I realise that I‘m not too intrigued by what I‘m reading. 5y
Birdsong28 I stuggled with this book as well. Its now on Television in the UK and as I am watching it the storyline is becoming clearer. And yes I do feel I have to finish it even if I don't like it. 5y
Renee27 @Buechersuechtling yeah and then it is just the matter of trying to get to the end of it so you can start a new one. 5y
Renee27 @Birdsong28 I'm so glad that I am not the only one who can't give up on a book even if I don't like it much. This story may make a better tv show than a book. 5y

I stumbled upon this audiobook when looking for something available to check out. Since I typically like the work of Julian Fellowes, I gave it a go. It was an exceptionally entertaining romp. Juliet Stevenson is an extraordinarily talented voice actor and makes this story sparkle. (Her interpretation of Middlemarch is also fantastic!)

If you tend to like Austen/Forster/Eliot/Gaskell sort of stories, maybe check this one out.

Birdsong28 They are adapting this for television. 📚📖 5y
Ericalambbrown @Birdsong28 I just saw that! And it‘s funny they have cast Harriet Walter as the Countess of Brockenhurst because she is who I saw in my mind‘s eye as I was listening to it. 5y

I picked this up because of the author. I've known of Julian Fellowes since his time acting on Monarch of the Glen, a Scottish series that's a favorite of mine. He's also the man behind Gosford Park and Downton Abbey. So when I heard that Belgravia will be made into a series it made sense to read the book first. Set during the Napoleonic wars, this is a "novel of manners" where love, family honor, and inheritance are questioned and clarified.

Wife A series! 😮 I listened to the audiobook when it was first released. Excited! 😬 6y

Anthony Trollope meets Downton Abbey!

I was totally sucked in to this world of petticoats and secrets. Unlike Downton, I didn‘t have to stop at just one episode at a time. I binged this hard core! Fellowes may not have the humor of Trollope, but no one can weave together upstairs vs. downstairs and old money vs. new money like he can. Excellent!

As a huge Downtown Abbey fan I could not wait to get my hands on Julian Fellowes latest book Belgravia and it is brilliant set in the 1800s it is full of rich and captivating characters I cannot put it down as I turn each each page I become more entrapped in their world. If you loved Downtown Abbey this is a must read.

Despite knowing I have two book discussions this week, it didn‘t really sink in until just a few moments ago that I should probably start reading the books for said book discussions.

Up first - this gem for my historical fiction discussion. And, showing off my lovely bookmark from @BarbaraTheBibliophage !

Rachel.Rencher I got my bookmark from @BarbaraTheBibliophage a couple days ago, and then packed it before I remembered to take a picture of it. 😂 That was so nice of her to send those out! 7y
Librarybelle @Rachel.Rencher Yes it was! I‘m afraid I had mine for at least a week before I found the right moment to take a picture of it. 😶 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad you got the bookmark, @Librarybelle ! It didn‘t have far to go. 💕 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Rachel.Rencher I‘m glad you received it. It sounds like packing was first priority, which makes total sense! 7y

And my commute has been classed up a bit from the Jackie Collins read along to a story that I‘m so excited to hear. Loved Downton - hoping to fill that void!

Redy2trvl I‘ve been thinking about this one. Keep me posted! 7y
Vbrrgirl @Redy2trvl want the book? In a bag to go out. 7y
Redy2trvl Yes, please!!!! I‘m headed to Atlanta tomorrow for the weekend. When I get back let‘s get together and swap bags. Thank you!! 7y

I recently borrowed this book from my mom solely based on this gorgeous cover. Unfortunately the camera doesn't do it justice.
