If Stephen King could write with murderous concision, he might have come up with "The Landlady," the story of a boarding house with an oddly talented proprietress and a small but permanent clientele. If Clive Barker had a sense of humor, he might have written "Pig," a brutally funny look at cooks and vegetarianism. And a more bloodthirsty Jorge Luis Borges might have imagined the fanatical little gambler in "Man From the South," who does his betting with a hammer, nails, and a butcher knife. But all these stories in this volume were written by Roald Dahl, whose genius for the horrific and grotesque is unparalleled and entirely his own. "Dahl has the mastery of plot and characters possessed by great writers of the past, along with a wildness and wryness of his own. One of his trademarks is writing beautifully about the ugly, even the horrible."--Los Angeles Times "An ingenious imagination, a fascination with odd and ordinary detail, and a lust for its thorough exploitation are the...strengths of Dahl's storytelling."--New York Times Book Review

"The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village."
— Roald Dahl (Matilda)

Questions are in the comments??

It‘s not too late to join in on all the fun!

#AuthorAMonth readers: you have a few days left to post your Roald Dahl reviews to count towards the prize box. I‘ll count the last reviews when I get up on Monday and announce the winner. 🤗

I encourage you to continue your Dahl readings for all of December if you‘re inspired!

Soubhiville Ooo, sorry about the way these comments posted. Still trying to devise an easier way to tag a huge group at once. I‘ll try fixing this for my next post! 5y

So hard to pick my #FavAuthor, but if I have to, I'd go with Roald Dahl because I find him most creative and I like his style of writing for both children's books and short stories!

Happy Roald Dahl Day, y‘all!

I was going just going through some blog posts from 2010 and found a reference to this celebration, checked the calendar, and realized it is September 13!

I love his short stories in particular and of course his middle grade novels. If forced to choose, The BFG is probably my favorite.

What is your favorite Roald Dahl work?

Itchyfeetreader Matilda. Can‘t imagine what so related to me as a little girl 😂😂 6y
Aimeesue The Twits. We still call all glue Hug- Tight Sticky Glue. 😁 6y
thebluestocking @Itchyfeetreader Ha! Matilda is an amazing reader character. 6y

I love his writing style, just not what he wrote in these stories. The way he writes about women got me annoyed, frustrated, even angry. I realise these stories were written in another time, but it‘s still just too much for me. Had to really push myself to finish it. Guess it‘s back to Matilda and The BFG...

I can‘t choose! These answers are based on my current mood and are subject to change and addition at any time.

1. Karl Ove Knausgaard
2. Roald Dahl
3. Gretchen Rubin
4. John Steinbeck (Nobel & Pulitzer & National Book Award)

Love this. I do watch T.V as sometimes I just want to do something that dosen't require concentration especially after a 10 hour shift but I do watch less T.V than I used to and I haven't had a one in my bedroom for 9 years and it does make all the difference. I think if T.V was no more it wouldn't matter to me as long as I had my books. 📖📚

Bookladylinda I love this but so guilty of sitting on front of the tv more often than picking up my books! Which is why my Goodreads goal is 8 books behind! 🤦🏾‍♀️ 7y

Happy Birthday, Roald Dahl!

BarbaraJean My favorite author growing up!! 7y
kyraleseberg @BarbaraJean Mine too! Matilda was my fave and I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches but I remember being freaked out by both the movies (so much so it spooked me to re-read the books!) 7y
BarbaraJean The BFG was my favorite until Matilda was published, and then I had a new favorite. :) I've never seen the movie of The Witches, but I remember sneaking it out of the library in between other books so my mom wouldn't see--I knew she wouldn't want me to read it. My parents were all concerned about Halloween "glorifying" the occult, so I knew witches would be frowned on. ?It's such a good/creepy book.. I need to re-read it one of these days! 7y
kyraleseberg @BarbaraJean You just gave me a wonderful idea- this would be a great book for me to read to Haven for Halloween. It's been years since I've done a re-read! Let me know if you ever watch the movie, I believe it's on Hulu! (edited) 7y

Pickpick

As someone who only knows Dahl's children's stories, I didn't know what to expect. I very much enjoyed the dark humour coming through many of the stories. Human's sinister side portrayed in tales about everyday stuff.

This is a bit different to how I remember Roald Dahl stories from when I was little. If you want to experience another side of his writing, pick up this collection of short stories. I'm half way through and very much enjoying it.
