Freedom
Freedom: A Novel | Jonathan Franzen
Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paulthe gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the avant-garde of the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to actually do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walterenvironmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family manshe was doing her small part to build a better world. But now, in the new millennium, the Berglunds have become a mystery. Why has their teenage son moved in with the aggressively Republican family next door? Why has Walter taken a job working with Big Coal? What exactly is Richard Katzoutr rocker and Walter's college best friend and rivalstill doing in the picture? Most of all, what has happened to Patty? Why has the bright star of Barrier Street become "a very different kind of neighbor," an implacable Fury coming unhinged before the street's attentive eyes?In his first novel since The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen has given us an epic of contemporary love and marriage. Freedom comically and tragically captures the temptations and burdens of liberty: the thrills of teenage lust, the shaken compromises of middle age, the wages of suburban sprawl, the heavy weight of empire. In charting the mistakes and joys of Freedom's characters as they struggle to learn how to live in an ever more confusing world, Franzen has produced an indelible and deeply moving portrait of our time.

An impulse buy from a thrift bookstore long ago, I wanted a tome as a companion for my travels all July. “Freedom” was a biting friend through the summer. My intro to Franzen, this intimate novel puts an unlikable family in the spotlight of the Dubya Bush years, and refuses to shine away. Sprawling and cringy and damningly political, I never particularly cared for these assembly of assholes, but I sure loved reading about their shenanigans.

Sparklemn “Assembly of assholes“...love it! I will be stealing it from you. 😜 2y

I am currently culling my shelves. I‘ve already donated a ton. I‘m pretty proud of myself actually! I have had this one since it came out in 2010. It looks to me like a chunkster about people I imagine I‘ll have a hard time liking and I‘m guessing it‘s fairly bleak, none of which I‘m very interested and in right now.
Might future me like it? Or at least finish it?
You decide! Keep or donate?

EvieBee I donated my unread copy, too. 3y
vlwelser I learned a lot about birds and how bad humans are for the environment but hated this overall. Donate. 😂 3y
Ruthiella I thought it was pretty good. It‘s the only Franzen I‘ve read. All the main characters are pretty insufferable, however. 3y

RaeLovesToRead Keep!!!! Franzen does social commentary so so well. The characters aren't likeable but they are exquisitely well drawn. I would describe the tone as sardonic. 3y
RaeLovesToRead Although if you're after an uplifting read, I agree, this isn't it. 3y
Chelsea.Poole Loved this book. Made me a Franzen fan. But I listened to the audiobook which was excellent. 3y

This book is long and constantly winding between characters, but does a brilliant job of showcasing the messiness of life and the difficulty of navigating love, friendship, marriage, family, job, society, and internal struggles. The characters feel realistic and make both poor and true-to-themselves decisions, sometimes at the same time. I found myself feeling conflicting emotions throughout- which is most of what real life happens to be.

SamAnne I really enjoyed this novel. The only Franzen I have read. I work in conservation and I loved the backdrop of allowing the mining of an area to “save“ it. I've run into those folks in my work..... 3y

Book #9 of the year: “Freedom” by Jonathan Franzen.

Depression stole March from me so this is the first thing I‘ve finished all month. I‘m still too mentally blah to write an actual review but I liked it. 4 stars.

This was an excellent book. It was so real. The characters were terrible people but towards the end they got back some of their humanity, like they had learned who they were supposed to be and what their place was in the world. (More in comments).

This was my #bookspin for January.

@TheAromaofBooks

Tineke I really enjoyed the looping back and how each persons story was intertwined with the other one and how the author shaped this in the book. Also the two stories about how the Berglunds left places and how different these leavings were from each other. The author is a remarkable craftsman who knows how to tell a story that could be someones actual life story. 4y

Freedom covers the politics of middle class suburbia, the promise of the 90‘s and futility of trying to change the world on your own. I really enjoyed the humour and tone in the first third of the book but it started to fall flat with Richard‘s story. I was waiting for everything to implode but the knockout blows didn‘t seem to land. Some astute summaries of american social values, and wonderfully dry humour couldn‘t quite compensate. 6/10

I've been reading this one pretty slowly. Frankly, these aren't always characters I want to spend time with. But they are really compellingly drawn and for all the flack Franzen gets - much of it deserved and more than balanced out by the heaps of praise - I can think of few who can put together a literary pageturner quite the way he does.

SamAnne I‘ve not read The Corrections but I really enjoyed this one. Well drawn characters and I appreciated the environmental political compromise story line. 4y

A rough day at work, but in the end it only made me feel stronger.
Then I spent some much needed time with my mom. We went shopping for birthday presents for my grandma. I got myself a new lamp for reading while I was at it. And we stopped at the dollar store and I got two new books as well.

I bought this for a weird reason three or four years ago: it was mentioned on Parks and Rec. After 20 pages (a new record for DNFing for me) I knew I couldn‘t waste my time with it. I can count the number of books I have not finished on one hand. I have a compulsion to read a book that I pick up until the bitter end for better or for worse in the hopes that it may get better or so that I can critique it in its entirety. However, I need my “freedom” from this book and I am going to walk away. I made it to page 206 and can‘t take any more! There are too many other things I want to read!

Let's be honest here. I don't ever not finish a book. If I don't like a book, I'll still finish it and find something positive to say about it. But damn it. This book. This was my first Franzen book and I hated these characters. I loved the writing, hated literally every character. I don't even mind "bad" people but why are they so annoying?! Astonishing. Epic. Compelling. Challenging.
