Cabin at the End of the World
Cabin at the End of the World | Paul Tremblay
"A tremendous book―thought-provoking and terrifying, with tension that winds up like a chain. The Cabin at the End of the World is Tremblay's personal best. It's that good." -- Stephen KingThe Bram Stoker Award-winning author of A Head Full of Ghosts adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense that recalls Stephen King's Misery, Ruth Ware's In a Dark, Dark Wood, and Jack Ketchum's cult hit The Girl Next Door.Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, "None of what's going to happen is your fault." Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: "Your dads won't want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world."Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

9-28-24: My 34th finished book of 2024! This one was so disturbing. A couple and their 7 year old daughter, vacationing in the middle of no where New Hampshire, are approached by 4 zealots who believe they are the there to save the world from the apocalypse. How to save it, a sacrifice must be made freely. Is it all a coincidence or is the world really ending? I feel like I didn‘t get the ending I wanted or expected. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖😫3️⃣4️⃣

Nope. Not for me. The audiobook made me dislike the book even more. Terrible narration. It's so hard to find authors that can write children's voices well. The dialogue was so cringy. I gave up after chapter 4.

Honestly, I need some serious time to recover after reading this psychological horror! Palpable with tension in a throat-gripping, edge-of-your-seat kind of way, this book is darkly desolate, purposely ambiguous, propulsive & almost suffocatingly foreboding. The readers' scepticism over the potential collective psychosis or apocalyptic scenario was as inconclusive as it was thought-provoking. In all the controversy over the ending, I LOVED it!

Reading_Beyond_The_Book_Cover I have the book. I need to read it. 🫣 Have you seen the movie? 1y
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Reading_Beyond_The_Book_Cover Honestly, it's insanely good! Be prepared to go on an intense ride with these characters! I actually haven't, but I'm planning to. I've read that there's some big changes that divert away from the novel (that always worries me 🫣). Have you? Would you recommend it? 1y
Sleepswithbooks I think I liked the movie better 🫢 1y

TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Sleepswithbooks Whoa! No way! That's super rare! I just watched the trailer, and it looks good, but it will take a lot to beat the novel for me! I thought Leonard was cast perfectly from the trailer! 1y
Sleepswithbooks @TheIntrovertedDodoBird I know! I think the booked was so hyped up before I read it that I was a bit disappointed. I think I‘m of unpopular opinion in this area 😂 1y
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Sleepswithbooks I totally understand that. I've read hyped books in the past, and they've fallen short because I expected too much after all the hype online 😂. Luckily, I happened upon this one while searching for some horror books, so I didn't have too many expectations (I kind of went it blind, I guess). From what I've read on here, there's loads of conflicting feelings about this one! 😂 1y
TieDyeDude I'd be interested in reading the book to compare, but I thought the movie was very well done. 1y
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @TieDyeDude Ooh, I highly recommend it! I've read that there's some pretty big changes (one huge one, apparently, that completely veers away from the film). I really must watch it after it's been so highly recommended here 😊. 1y
Reading_Beyond_The_Book_Cover @TheIntrovertedDodoBird I saw the movie and didn‘t really care for it much. It seemed too much like I was one of the characters in not knowing anything. I felt like a confused apparition in all the scenes. Maybe reading the book and rewatching will change my opinion. 1y
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @Reading_Beyond_The_Book_Cover Honestly, I was as confused as the characters in the book, but I kind of loved it! 😂 I thought it made the novel super twisty! You never know. The novel probably delves deeper than the film & might be a less confusing companion! I'm still hung up on the fact that a completely different person dies in the film and think the film makes less sense because of it. I don't know, maybe I'll change my mind once I watch it! 1y

What a weird book.
It might take me a while to form some cohesive thoughts on this. Great characterizations, some motivations are left open to interpretation of the reader, which is fascinating but makes it feel a bit undone. A quick & intense read.

Traci1 This was a weird one. I think I saw they made it into a movie. Not sure how I feel about that. 2y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 I don‘t like it when things are left to the interpretation of the reader, feels a cop out. 2y
5feet.of.fury @Traci1 I heard the movie takes a big departure from the book, I will probably watch it next week, I wanted to read first. @Andrew65 I agree. 2y

I loved this! The beginning was so palpable with tension that I didn‘t realise I was clenched up until I got cramp. 🤣 disturbing and bleak, whilst touching on many relevant modern day topics. The whole narrative fit together nicely, whilst not being predictable. Will definitely look out for more of Tremblay‘s books.

Usually I don't listen to audio books because I end up doing a million things while playing them and I don't pay attention. I listened to this one on audio for my commute to work and the reader was atrocious. The story itself was good though. Do yourself a favor if you decide to read it and get the physical copy. I know I wish I did.

If you write a book and follow all the rules that you were taught, it might not work out. Here it didn't. I could feel the writing teacher, instructing “and here you have to do this, followed by that.“ That might be the reason why there's no atmosphere, no believable characters and no tension. Things were mentioned but no explanations were given at any point. I did not care the least for any of the characters. I was just glad it was over.

Home invasions and a cabin in the middle of nowhere are two of the scariest things I can imagine. That said, despite the extreme violence, this was a bit slow. It sort of had that slow tension-building common to '70s horror movies, but something was just missing for me.

I am struggling a bit with rating this book. I loved Wen, and the premise was intriguing. However, I did not enjoy the brutality, and the ending was very unsatisfying. #litsylovereads #marchmadness #marvellousmarch

NikkiM5 I liked the book but I agree, the end was meh lol. I recommend you check out the M. Night movie too, to compare. 2y
Morr_Books @NikkiM5 So you still recommend the movie, even if I am meh on the book? I was intrigued with the movie (because of M Night and some of the actors), which is why I read the book. 2y

Did something I‘ve never done before: Stopped reading this book at 60% and went and saw the film. Unbeknownst to me,until I saw the film & went back to the book, I‘d paused at the exact spot the film & book change direction. The film finished better than the book which started off really well then lost steam. The book is good but where the film wins out is keeping the lives of the invaders ambiguous. Not knowing too much about them is more scary

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I didn't care for the ending of this book, so I'm glad to hear the movie did a better job. 2y
The_Book_Ninja @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego yes it did. I feel the book copped out, the film saw the situation through. 2y

Saw this one with my husband. I feel like it‘s best when you aren‘t expecting it to be exactly like the book. (But we all know books and movies don‘t end up the same). Either way, I liked the movie for what it was —- and Batista is such a great actor :) #BookToMovie

I saw the movie based on this book, Knock at the Cabin, yesterday and was so dissatisfied with the ending that I immediately downloaded the book and spent all morning reading it. Eric and Andrew are on vacation at a remote cabin with their daughter Wen when four strangers arrive, insisting they make an unthinkable choice to save the world. Both movie and book are heartbreaking and violent, but the book asks questions that the movie oversimplifies.

5feet.of.fury I own this book but haven‘t read it. I want to see the movie but mostly because of Bautista. Not really an M Night fan. 2y

An engrossing read about decisions to be made in a pre- apocalyptic world. Eric, Andrew and their daughter Wen are faced with decisions and questions on what and who to believe. Are the voices in their heads real or is this just a home invasion gone bad? Dark reads are my genre and this fits right in. I would‘ve liked to know a little more with the ending, but it‘s probably better left to the reader‘s own imagination. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It‘s interesting to hear about what scares certain people and what doesn‘t. This book gave me bad dreams! It wasn‘t exactly what I was looking for when I picked it, but it definitely hit the spot for scare factor, violence, and gruesome-ness. The author made some…interesting style choices that did take me out of the story a little.

It‘s best to know nothing about this book before going in. Even the summary on the back doesn‘t give you anything past the first chapter. But I will say this so you know what type of horror this is: home invasion.

The author noted he re-read Lord of the Flies before writing this, not so much for content, but for atmosphere/mind-set. And yeah, I can see that.

The writing was really well done. Perfect to keep you guessing what the reality is.

While my past experience with this author had me expecting a heavy dose of visceral horror, that's not quite what I got. I'm not sure how to describe this book. There's definitely some horror in it, & parts are horrific, but the frightening bits took a backseat to what seemed to be the focus of the plot, which was, perhaps, a study in existentialism in terms of horror? This was a weird one. I enjoyed it, but it was strange & a tad unruly.
