The Night Tiger
The Night Tiger: A Novel | Yangsze Choo
A sweeping historical novel about a dancehall girl and an orphan boy whose fates entangle over an old Chinese superstition about men who turn into tigers. When 11-year-old Rens master dies, he makes one last request of his Chinese houseboy: that Ren find his severed finger, lost years ago in an accident, and reunite it with his body. Ren has 49 days, or else his masters soul will roam the earth, unable to rest in peace. Ji Lin always wanted to be a doctor, but as a girl in 1930s Malaysia, apprentice dressmaker is a more suitable occupation. Secretly, though, Ji Lin also moonlights as a dancehall girl to help pay off her beloved mothers Mahjong debts. One night, Ji Lins dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir: a severed finger. Convinced the finger is bad luck, Ji Lin enlists the help of her erstwhile stepbrother to return it to its rightful owner. As the 49 days tick down, and a prowling tiger wreaks havoc on the town, Ji Lin and Rens lives intertwine in ways they could never have imagined. Propulsive and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores colonialism and independence, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and first love. Braided through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a page-turner of the highest order.

3✨I had to stop and start this one a few times. We learn a little about Malayan culture when our MC accidentally ends up with a severed finger after a dance. Needing to return the finger so the owner could be whole in death was a main drive, although a lot more happened. The relationships were interesting, but overall it was a pretty good read. #FoodandLit @Texreader @Catsandbooks Malaysia 🇲🇾

This was really good and it sucked me right in. It has a lot of cultural references to numerology and other superstitions from Chinese culture. Set in Malaysia during UK colonial rule. I feel inspired to read her latest book.

This author read audio book kept me engaged until the end. A young houseboy fulfilling a promise and an apprentice dressmaker working at a dancehall to pay her mother‘s debts are thrown together with dangerous results. Choo‘s novel explores family relationships against the lush backdrop of 1930‘s Malay. Adding more Choo titles to my TBR after this 4/5 ⭐️ read.

A hard hitting book about cultural superstitions, unbreakable bonds, destiny, family conflict, and a forbidden romance.

A brilliant read. I don't know how the author was able to organize all of these different elements and still present them beautifully.

A solid 4 star read as I had to rush through the ending a bit. This books deserves a reread to capture all the nuances of the story and characters.

I would love to see this as a movie.

Started this work of art 😍 I mean the cover is just stunning. This was my pick for this months bookclub with my friends.

A gorgeous piece of magical realism. A story of forbidden love, adventure, superstition, danger, mystery, and ambition.

I predict this will be my favorite read of the year so far.

Finished this morning while swinging on the outside daybed overlooking the ricer at my AirBnB. Beautiful spot for some alone time! 📚

I loved this historical novel set in 1930s Malaysia. The romance was a bit…interesting, but everything else was so atmospheric and such a unique story. I especially liked how it focused in on the unequal treatment of women and girls. Ren was my favorite, & I would love another story about him.

Bad news on the #HelloKitty front. Pathology showed she has FISS (feline injection site sarcoma). It‘s rare, aggressive, and difficult to treat. We don‘t have a whole lot of options, the main one under consideration is amputation and radiation. We won‘t make any decisions until more scans are done.

It‘s a really hard year. #catsoflitsy

Addison_Reads @4thhouseontheleft She was a ten yr old cat. About a month after her yearly shots I noticed something wasn't right. We took her back to the vet were they ran tests and diagnosed her with FISS. They said there wasn't much they could do because of were it was located and how fast it was growing. We didn't want her to suffer, so we gave her one last day full of love and said goodbye. I had never heard of FISS before, or since, until I saw your post. 2y
Addison_Reads @4thhouseontheleft Her tumor started on the back of her neck and it had grown so fast it was causing neurological issues so surgery wasn't an option for us. One of the perks of having a lending library is reading what people donate.

Forbidden love, murder, mystery, and a missing finger that keeps showing up.

Book 13 I listened to this book, excellently narrated by the author. Ji Lin, a young woman searching for the owner of a dehydrated, severed finger she came in possession of, learns this finger has been the source of bad luck and is associated with ancient Chinese lore. She dreams vividly of a young boy who advises her about the finger. Fantastical and interesting, the story and characters are compelling. I would read more from Choo. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
