This was a big ass book and a bit outdated but still essential reading for anyone interested or curious about institutional racism and/or reproductive rights. so-soI really wanted to love this book because it‘s rare that I come across a Black Filipina main character that reflects me and heritage. There were some elements that I like…particularly how both cultures showed up in her work but it felt off and a bit forced. I think the narration did little to help as some of the Tagalog words were mispronounced. #blitsy #readdiversebooks

I could see this being an important book for some young person in its depiction of a 16 year old Bangladeshi girl who comes out to her (Muslim) family as gay, and how she deals with discrimination and cultural appropriation in her all-girls Irish school. And, yes, that‘s A LOT; sometimes I found it a little overwhelming! #queer #readdiversebooks

Really great! It melded the hustle of Asian aunties & conjunction of new+old money/influence/customs as present in Crazy Rich Asians while still allowing for the authenticity of ancient beliefs. Also, tbh, I got tired of the wealth porn in CRA, & found the ppl in BWS to be more human & interesting, esp the MC who navigates her queer+Asianness after newly immigrating to Malaysia from the US with her family #queer #readdiversebooks

It‘s a new take on the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table with a twist of Root/Blood Magic woven in. I lucked up with a great follow-up read to Amari and the Night Brothers. Another fantasy with a Black female protagonist...a bit older (college aged), darker and heavier but a really good book so far (7 of 18 hours in!). #BlackLitsy #Blitsy #ReadDiverseBooks
