A low pick. It‘s by no means a bad example of the whole “American teenagers navigate romantic entanglements in a high school setting” thing, but it comes up short compared to Callender‘s recent books. They‘ve become a lot better at crafting characters who process their flaws and strengths in nuanced ways. Beside FELIX EVER AFTER, this feels pretty surface level.

It does normalize queerness really well, though, and there‘s a Gideon. #somanygideons

Nutmegnc I feel the same way. Felix was so stellar and this was just okay. 2y
xicanti @Nutmegnc okay is the word for it. I think I‘d have liked it more if I didn‘t know what they CAN do. 2y

This book normalizes queerness so well! Such a sweet story.

Also impressed by Kacen Callener's range because this could not have been more different from Queen of the Conquered!

Some cute parts to this queer romance, but not a fan of all the cheating going on. Also, didn‘t quite understand some of the secondary characters-not well developed at all. BUT it is a queer romance between bi boy and a deaf boy, and the love story has nothing to do with that. They just are who they are and I really liked that. #bbrc #teenangst #sagaapproved #readmyowndamnbooks

A seriously cute story about first loves. I really enjoyed the characters except for one. Nate‘s best friend and ex gf really annoyed me. She just wasn‘t a really great friend. Besides that it‘s was great to see Nat grow through out the story. His relationship with Oliver is so cute!!!

I have been immersed in this genre lately and enjoying all its nuances. 3.5 stars. The book has a lot of area of mild cheating which for me, lessens the book a bit. Every major and secondary character cheats in some way, which is ok, but it did lower the impact of the story for me. I really liked Oliver James and adding his being deaf only added to the fullness of his character.

Enjoyed this #YA #QPoC read. I usually don‘t read romance, but I liked this one. I couldn‘t stop reading so I didn‘t go to bed until 4am this morning 🤦🏽‍♀️. I liked that it was natural and normal to be queer in Bird‘s community. It wasn‘t about the turmoil of Bird accepting who he was, it was about him coming to terms with the unpredictability of life, of him letting himself love and be loved, and coming to terms with loss. #diversereads

A pretty standard ya. It follows a ton of tropes. But still cute and quick.

This was a sweet, lighter YA book with a romance between two queer PoC boys, one of whom is deaf. And the drama in the story has nothing to do with any of those things!

Seriously! There's so much representation here and none of it seems forced. And the main character is just so perfectly flawed and makes some really bad decisions. The end doesn't wrap everything up in a neat little package- it's messy, just like life. 😍😍😍

#DiverseReads

ravenlee I love when YA has characters who are diverse, but the story is its own thing. You know, like in the real world, when someone might be gay or black or have a disability and it doesn‘t affect EVERYTHING about their lives. 6y
GondorGirl @ravenlee Yes! While sometimes the story is truly about race or gender or orientation (and those stories are important) sometimes it's nice to remember that people shouldn't be defined by those things. 6y

I've been wanting to read this for awhile, and I'm so glad I finally did! I think there's something relatable about each of the characters. #BookRiotReadHarderChallenge2019: novel by a trans or nonbinary author

CoffeeNBooks @Lovesbooks87- Thank you, again, for donating books to my classroom library so I can borrow them to read! The great thing is, when I tell all of my classes about this book tomorrow, someone will check it out, and others will put their name on the waiting list for it. Also, Amazon will be delivering a birthday present to you on Friday- it might be in 2 separate packages. 🎉🎂🎉 6y
Lovesbooks87 @CoffeeNBooks yay! I am so glad that you enjoyed it. It makes me happy to know that your students and you are enjoying all the books that I send. Thank you for thinking of me. I will be on the look out for it! Like I said I already have started saving more books for you! 😊 6y

3/5 “Maybe the ending isn‘t even really the point. Just as long as there was a happy somewhere along the way.” I loved the cute m/m teen fluff but I felt there was a major lack of character depth. After finishing this almost 300 page book I felt as though I didn‘t know much about the characters, almost as if they were assigned one character flaw each and then the character development was abandoned. But ultimately it was still worth the read.

This was #huggable ! My favorite part...the realness of the characters. They were jerks sometimes, what high school kid isn‘t? I loved the messy journey of Bird and Ollie.

The ending was satisfying but I would definitely read a sequel. And ...

I want to see this at the movie theater.

114 pages in and I‘m really loving this story .... and I don‘t do romance. BUT ... LBTGQ, POC, Deaf — ASL! I‘m ALL IN, even though I am not a part of any of those communities. I just like widening my world view.

All that said....Bird is making me want to throw this book across the room! But that‘s okay, his character is written very real.

This was overall a really great read. I really enjoyed where the story went as well as the characters progression. I think that Bird is a a really realistic character with some huge flaws, which I really enjoyed. Not very often do you read characters that are so real! I also really enjoyed the message that every love story is an epic love story. See full review on my new blog. https://i-like-big-books.weebly.com

This one is similar to Albertalli and Silvera‘s work, centering on two adorably smitten boys. It‘s chalked full of high school angst; complicated friendships with romantic entanglements, personal insecurities as the primary obstacle to getting together, and stupidly early curfews. Lots of representation with POC and LGBT characters. One of the boys is also deaf. It gets pretty steamy at points. Very sex positive... and very descriptive.

This was a cute rom-com about Nate who is trying to figure out who he likes. His best friend from childhood moves back after 5 years and Nate starts to have feeling for Oliver. They work together to figure out how they both feel and have to work together to make their relationship work. This is an important book for both teenagers and adults as it explores a queer relationship with people of color. I wish I could know more about Nate and Oliver!

Andrew65 Going well, good luck for the final day. 😊👍👏 6y

It‘s really important that youth (and adults!) get stories written by and about queer people of color. This book was warm and fuzzy and sweet but is so much more than that.

On the one hand, this book is your basic romcom, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. On the other, it is so rare to find a romcom with QPoC characters and have the angsty middle bit NOT be about their identities for a change, which I find very refreshing. Also, I like romcoms and this one is pretty cute :)
