My unread book collection is getting wildly out of hand. I haven't counted down to the book, but my estimate is over 1,000 (only counting my books, not my kids'). Again...Unread. 🤦‍♀️ So I've decided to attempt to 1. Stop buying books (other than botm) and 2. Try to read mostly off my shelves. I got this planner a year ago and it has space for 180 reviews. So that is my goal for the year. 180. From my shelves only. Borrowed books won't count.

Traci1 Audios and ebooks will only count if I own the corresponding physical book. Rereads won't count. I'll still borrow, listen and reread, but they won't go into the book so I'll need to read more than 180 to do this. But I'm feeling confident. Sort of. The not buying is making me twitchy and it's only day 2, so... we shall see. Wish me luck! 🤞 3y
rabbitprincess Good luck! You got this 💪🏼 3y
Ruthiella Good luck! 👍 Hopefully BOTM will be enough to scratch that “new book” itch! 3y

My big goal this year was to try to reduce my owned, physical books by 125. While I did not reach that, I‘m thrilled to have read 150 with an overall reduction of 58 and only 92 books acquired! Since 150 isn‘t even half the number of books I read in 2020, there‘s definite room for improvement, so I‘ll be carrying this resolution forward into 2021 with a goal of 15 of my own physical books read each month.

BarbaraBB I tries this too but I only managed to reduce my unread books with 28... I don‘t read as many as you of course but I can‘t stop buying new ones 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I‘ve been very bad about buying books for years. I‘ve only been able to reduce my buying by living in a place that has few bookstores and slow shipping. Plus this method of tracking has really helped: the white board is positioned where I can see it from my reading chair, so I‘m faced with it all the time. I tried a different tracking method previously that didn‘t work at all, so I‘m glad I found something that works! 4y

For anyone with a resolution, I wanted to recommend this app I use, Habitica. It basically uses CBT principles packaged as a text-based rpg. You can set a task (say, finish a book) and it gives you rewards to spend on in-game upgrades, or rewards you set up for yourself (a coffee from Starbucks, a bubble bath, etc) Anyway, I thought it might be helpful!

#Readolutions is a great hashtag, @Traci1 !

I‘m trying to keep my reading goals simple for 2021, so I kept my list to 3.

As I mentioned yesterday, I was thinking about a #pennyperpage budget for new books, and I‘m committing to that now. If anyone would like like to join in, use the hashtag so we can try to hold each other accountable! ☺️

Crazeedi Love this hashtag! Going to use it!! 4y
Traci1 I love the penny a page one. That's a great idea! 4y
NovelGirl82 I‘m definitely in for the #pennyperpage goal! I‘m also going to try to read my shelves, including the MANY audiobooks that I have unread! 4y

My bookish resolutions for 2021 range from easily doable (read a Robin Hobb) to never gonna happen (reading 100 books from my tbr). But I'm going to give it my best.

Do you have any #readolutions for the coming year?

Mitch Wow - that‘s an ambitious list! Once you read one Hobb you‘ll want to read them all! 👍🏼 4y

Booked2020: 1 = complete!

I was naughty with book buying this month, but I have no regrets. Nearly all were from my former local indies and I have no idea when I‘ll be back there again. I‘ve readjusted my overall reduction goal to 50, which I should be able to reach comfortably. And I‘ve read 133 of my own physical books! 🥳

Librariana I think... I must be on the same boat with you. My intentions about reading the books I already own and decreasing my TBR are good... and I know that I should read said books and NOT buy new ones.... but... but.... INDIES, Holly! Indies!! They must be supported! 😊 I've tried buying less for myself and more for my nieces. But I also kinda sorta can't help it! 4y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana So important to support those indies! I have no regrets about that. I think I‘ve found a good balance between acquiring and reading. I have a white board on the wall of my library and have my totals for read and acquired for the year on it. It‘s helped me a lot to stay on track. Plus it helps to not have any indies around here that excite me. 😆 4y
Librariana That's brilliant! Do you think you'd ever be willing to share your white board here? It'd be such a good motivator/source of inspo! 4y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana I posted it at one point a while back. I‘ll hunt for it and tag you on the post. 4y

I used my birthday gift card for Powell‘s this month and also traded in books at a local store, so I ended up with a lot more acquired this month. And I reached a milestone: 100 owned, physical books read! 🎉

Not great progress on my challenges for various reasons this month. Oh well! I‘m doing well overall on avoiding buying physical books, as these are all from subscription boxes. Plus 55 of my own physical books read so far this year! How‘s progress on goals going for you?

Soubhiville You‘re doing great! I‘m not sure how many of my own books I‘ve read so far this year, but I have watched my owned TBR shelves shrink some so I know there‘s been some progress. 😊 The pandemic has made it much easier to not buy new books anyway 🤷‍♀️. 4y
Librariana You're doing fantastic! And I commend you for the progress you've made so far 😊 On the Goodreads challenge, I'm at 37 of 65 (56%) and on LitsyAtoZ, I'm at 18 of 26 with 8 more to go. I'm trying to read my own books, but I have very little impulse control when it comes to the library 😁 Being employed there doesn't help! According to GR, I own 196 I have not read 😳😳😳 4y
Librariana And according to my unreadshelf project stats (which I also track via Goodreads), I've only read 10 of my own books so far this year 😳😔 4y
See All 7 Comments
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville It‘s definitely made avoiding book buying easier (though the Powell‘s website remains tempting) and libraries being closed has frankly helped me stay on track, too. Which is good, as I can only count on willpower so much. 😂 4y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Hey, 10 is better than none! And confession time: I have over 1000 unread physical books. I‘ve done a lot of book buying, far more than my reading can keep up with. Hence my push this year to try to focus on my books, all of which I want to read! At least I‘m not addicted to crack but books. 😂 4y
Soubhiville Another package arrived from Bookshop yesterday. It seems like there might be 2 books in this one 😊. Thank you Holly! 4y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville You‘re welcome! There‘s actually one more box, but I don‘t know when it will arrive, as the tracking number has said “on its way to usps” for days now. Oh well, even if it ends up being late, that‘s ok. 4y

BUT .... I have around 300 books on my current TBR list. An abundance of ARCs (not a complaint!!) have added to that number. So, I think my #ReadingResolutions for this year will be related to reading down my TBR, and curbing my tendency to get All.The.Books. 😜

• do a cull of my library and donate (I have books from 20 years ago on my shelves that I‘ve barely touched).

Getting my reading journal set up for 2019. Last year my resolutions were more ambitious and they stressed me out. So this year I am keeping things easier. I am really bad about starting a series and never finishing it or lately buying all the books in a series at once and leaving them all unread. This year I will finish at least 5 of them. One reread of a book I love will help me do something I‘ve been wanting to make more time for.

- Read and give away 50+ books from my overcrowded shelves (without replacing them all with unread books!)

- Read 50% female authors and 50% poc authors (potentially hard with the state of British publishing but with some research should be possible!)

That's fair. I do read a lot of nonfiction and lit fic. Maybe more science fiction this year? There's been a few lately that have piqued my interest.

I‘ll give this some thought, since I didn‘t do as well with diversity as I intended this year. Truthfully, I need more help corralling my TBR than anything else.

Give it a try here: https://bookriot.com/2018/12/05/reading-resolution-quiz/

sprainedbrain I love all of these results people are posting. I feel like I should do them all! 6y
tjwill Yeah, mine said to read more, but I read more this year than I ever have, and I chose the 100+ option on that question. 🤔 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill That‘s kind of nuts. You‘re so busy and still reading a whole bunch! 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @sprainedbrain There‘s never a wrong way to read! 6y
MaleficentBookDragon Mine said to read outside my comfort zone. But there is sooooo many more still left on my #TBR that are in my comfort zone (and in my 🏠) 😂 6y
saresmoore That‘s what I got, too, and fortunately my reading list for next year is abundantly diverse, so far. Smash the patriarchy! 6y
Gezemice It just told me to read more. Really? I have read 127 books tjis year and it is about my limit - they were longer books this year... 6y
Gezemice @tjwill Same here! Me thinks their program is buggy. 6y
jfalkens I got read more 6y

I‘ve been planning my 2019 #ReadingResolutions (while also working on finishing my 2018 challenges), so this quiz was timely. This is definitely something I need to do. 😬

Here‘s the link: https://bookriot.com/2018/12/05/reading-resolution-quiz/

8little_paws Every time I try to organize my tbr I can't find anything to remove! 6y
sprainedbrain @8little_paws the struggle is real! I do think I could thin out my Goodreads list of books I want to read but don‘t already have, though. We shall see! 😂 6y
Ejensen86 My downfall is the little free library. I have a ton of books that I‘ve picked up but between school and work, I haven‘t had time to read for pleasure. That said, I have an amazing local book store that I support. Maybe I‘ll get rid of 5 freebie books on my walk this am that I know I probably won‘t get to. 6y

the.bookish.valkyrie Lol, me too! And I‘m already behind on June! 6y
SilversReviews I‘ve been trying to be creative. Not getting them all, but it is such fun. I think today is the first day I couldn‘t think of something. @Jess7 Well...maybe not...there may have been more days. (edited) 6y

Last month I failed at #readingresolutions about halfway through the month. It was fun though so here's my May attempt. #maytbr

It will be another month of lofty goals. The Naturalist took the place of The Great Alone last month and I'm still working on it.
The top 3 are for a buddy read, book club and #LMPBC
The bottom 2 are audiobooks I hope to finish before they disappear. I also just added 3 comics to Hoopla.
Yay for May!
@Jess7

MaleficentBookDragon Great choices. 7y
