Crime Writers Association John Creasey Dagger Award winner An ECONOMIST TOP FICTION TITLE OF THE YEAR A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR A GUARDIAN BEST CRIME AND THRILLER OF THE YEAR A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR A soulful, humane, and sparklingly funny novel. Spend some time with Sheldon and company in the Scandinavian wilderness and you just might make peace with your god, your ghosts, and yourself. Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story Sheldon Horowitzwidowed, impatient, impertinenthas grudgingly agreed to leave New York and move in with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her new husband, Lars, in Norwaya country of blue and ice with one thousand Jews, not one of them a former Marine sniper in the Korean War turned watch repairman. Not until now, anyway. Home alone one morning, Sheldon witnesses a dispute between the woman who lives upstairs and an aggressive stranger. When events turn dire, Sheldon seizes and shields the neighbors young son from the violence, and they flee the scene. As Sheldon and the boy look for a safe haven in an alien world, past and present weave together, forcing them ever forward to a wrenching moment of truth. Well, this was much grittier than expected! Really well written and intense. The smatterings of charm and wit and humor were so well executed for a story that, overall, was not a light one. This had been on my TBR for a wicked long time and I went into it just trusting that I‘d put it on that (admittedly extensive) list for a reason. If you like a tidy ending and linear storytelling, skip it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The characters are great and there is tons of atmosphere. That said, it was plenty dark without much in the way of resolution.

#CurrentRead and not sure I'm feeling it. I'm still in the early chapters but I'm not feeling any connection to Sheldon (or is his name Donny? And how long till I understand why he (maybe) has two names?) or his disjointed storytelling. I'll try again after work.

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one the oldest selection on my TBR list - Originally added February 16, 2017.

I had high expectations about this book. Maybe too high because I didn‘t like it as much as I thought I would. To me, it was too much war story and not enough crime drama.

Suet624 Nice cover though. 😀 5y
suvata @Suet624 I think that‘s what drew me to it. 5y

Once I got a handle on the writing style - flashbacks, hallucinations etc - I was better able to enjoy this thriller. Recommend it for the strong development of the main character.

Such an amazing #LTLPBC package from @DebBates101 ! I LOVE macarons & macaroons, and the packaging is so pretty. Can‘t wait to get into the spooky spirit with the Victorian ghost stories while enjoying the naughty vicar (😂😂😂). Thank you so much!!

DebBates101 @Ajessgirl Tell the Ghostly Tales book was too cute to pass up, but i should have bought one for me lol! The pastries are from an amazing bakery in St Louis. The Tea is from a tea room founded by an English expats. They host traditional high tea and run a standard cafe with the most delicious English goodies. The Naughty Vicar Tea is my favorite! If you ever come to STL I will take you to high tea 😊🥐☕️🥧 @Laughterhp 6y

#norwegianbynight is excellent #scandinaviannoir. Sheldon Horowitz is old and has just moved from the US, to Norway with his granddaughter. He struggles to find familiarity and maybe experiencing dementia until one day, he helps the neighbours and ends up on the run thru the unfamiliar landscape with a young boy, using skills he thought he'd lost to save this young life. #derekbmiller has finely crafted an breathtaking story.

Finished this book today. My choice for our #LTLPBC ! I‘m also using it for a couple prompts.

#Booked2018 - MC over 70 (or 80) 🤷🏻‍♀️ and #popsugar18

This book was a lot different than I thought it was going to be. A lot darker than I thought. It was a little slow for me and some parts were a little confusing. I‘m not going to say anything else and let @DebBates101 @Ajessgirl form their own opinions!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I may read this one for #nordicnoir from the #pop18 list. 6y

Ugh this book. It's not going well so far for me but it's my book club book. I have an extreme dislike for super old characters who are either doddering or mean. Or when I have to read long passages about bodily functions. Chapter 2- a scene very descriptive about trying to urinate. Ugh. Hope it gets better. Anyone read this one?

vivastory I checked this one out, but never got around to it. Might have to skip this one. 7y

#DecDays #YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch Upon first glance both Sheldon & Ove, may seem like two grumpy, crotchety,ill-tempered old men😡 but really the opposite is true!!!! Well that was unusual. I read fairly widely in this genre, but that was the first book about an 82 year old Jewish veteran of the Korean war taking on a war criminal from Kosovo in Norway.

As much a meditation on parenting, being Jewish in America, grief, war, and regret as a plot-driven thriller. Sheldon Horowitz is a flawed hero for all ages. Sadly, I'm not holding my breath for the sequel.
