The Lost World
The Lost World | Arthur Conan Doyle
Edward Malone is a man in love; the woman of his dreams being Gladys Hungerton. Gladys, though, is critical of Malone, as he has never done anything spectacular or dangerous to prove his love for her. Malone, being a journalist on the Daily Gazette, quickly finds a way in which he can impress Gladys. Malone therefore signs up to cover the expedition of Professor George Edward Challenger.Professor Challenger's scientific reputation has been damaged by his insistence that creatures thought to be extinct exist within the Amazon basin; and has therefore announced an expedition to regain his credibility. The expedition goes forth and is made up of Professor Challenger, Professor Summerlee, the Amazon adventurer Lord John Roxton, and Malone. The expedition also has a number of natives acting as guides and equipment carriers.

Definitely an adventure story with all the elements of one that you‘d want. The idea reminded me of Frankenstein—scientific assertions without believable explanation. I wouldn‘t say Challenger is the opposite of Holmes, like the introduction says. Opposite in appearance, maybe, but not in confidence and derision. There was an annoying amount of white race superiority. I enjoy Doyle‘s writing style, but the story wasn‘t one that really stuck.

Letter format from young journalist, Edward Malone as he takes part in a whirlwind adventure to S America with the esteemed Professor Challenger. Challenger believes to have seen prehistoric beasts previously and is sent with a team to prove his outlandish claims. They find a volcanic plateau in the middle of the Amazon that houses more than just the proclaimed Stegasaurus and Pterodactyl… Will they survive to show truth to the original claims?

Edward, a newspaper writer, seeks to go on an adventure like no other to impress his girl, Gladys. This adventure takes Edward to an undiscovered part of the world that hosts some creatures never before seen alive before.

Slightly droning, long story that took forever to get to the interesting part.

Not for everyone, but I have a soft spot for turn-of-the-century sci-fi. It starts slow, has irracisble characters, and overly verbose tangets, but TBH, I liked those flaws. And I was delighted and surprised by several character moments (pictured). It's colonialist roots and western-civilization superiority-complex obviously don't age well. Recommended for fans of Sherlock Holmes (same author), Jules Verne, or survival stories. #dw2020reads

I keep switching between a print version and an #audiobook of this. It's a slow start, but still enjoyable character building. By chapter 10 the action really kicks in! I've tried 3 different audio versions (2 others from Librovox), and this one is my favorite - narration by Paul Hecht.

I haven‘t read this, and confession time, I‘ve never seen any of the Jurassic Park movies! 🦖

ElizaMarie What!? You must watch! Jurassic Park is great! It is one of my favorite movies! A bit different from the book but still very very good! 4y
BethM I‘ve seen all the movies but never read the books. 4y
Klou Great pick!! But WHAT? The first one is a classic!! Can't say I remember much of the others as I've only seen them once, but the first one is amazing!! Watched it numerous times! 4y

I was optimistic about this one, but I was sorely disappointed. I really like the Sherlock Holmes stories, but this one bored me. I was expecting to be immediately transported to a "lost world" of prehistoric animals. But, instead it started with a journalist, Edward Malone interviewing the explorer, Professor George Challenger. Then they get in a fist fight for some reason; I did not like Challenger's attitude at all. To each his own. ?

I enjoyed this adventure story that I picked up free LAST summer from audiosync... https://www.audiobooksync.com/ they give out free YA and classic audiobooks during the summer months if you have not discovered them already.

Just be forwarned that it is a product of its time, there are big game hunters, ape-men, Indians, negros, half-breeds etc on this adventure romp through the amazon in to the lost world of Pterodactyls, Stegosauruses, etc

I started reading this and then the news about the Amazon fires hit. Now, every time I sit to read, I get this sense of dread. This colonial mindset in this book is a huge reason why these fires started. Colonial greed is ugly. I have to put this one down for my own health.

What a difference 25 years or so make. I loved this when I read it in my early teen years. Now, it was hard to get through. It is very well written, and this audio book had a great narrator, but I couldn't stand most of the characters. Self righteous, self important, and uncaring. They were quite satisfied with the part they played in the near genocide of an entire race. The description of the lost world was fantastic, the fate of it was tragic.

flying_monkeys This reminds me of a quote from Lost Lake (totally different world/genre, yes) in which an elderly woman who has access to hundreds of books says she has nothing to read b/c if she re-read any of those books the ending would change. It‘s always a risk revisiting a “classic” or childhood favorite. Sometimes they hold up, sometimes they crumble. Sorry this one was only so-so. 6y

I was struggling until i vaguely remembered that this was one of the books i read many years ago when i think i read everything conan doyle had written after exhausting sherlock. A scientific expedition led by prof challenger goes to the Amazon basin to search for a hidden world of dinosaurs. This was the version i had, my life now is regretting getting rid of bks i owned in the past.

Billypar I always forget he wrote this because of how different it is from Sherlock. Great idea for an adventure story, long before Jurassic Park! 6y

I‘m camping with my family this weekend and finished this while taking an #audiowalk along the edge of the lake.

I enjoyed this fun adventure story with dinosaurs. However, I definitely like The Sherlock Holmes stories more. One thing to note, I can read past racism in older novels by considering the culture in which they were written, but if that is difficult for you, I‘d recommend that you stay away from this one.

I KNEW I didn‘t like Gladys. I was kind of hoping Malone wouldn‘t marry her, but I never thought of her being a faithless liar. In the end, it was a great adventure, and a quick little read. I ended up reading multiple sections a day because I couldn‘t get enough. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with a sense of adventure, discovery, and imagination. Without that, I would imagine it would just be too far fetched.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I write with a heavy heart, that I was unable to finish this book. The book had a slow pace with no real rush of adventure like I had hoped. And poor Mr. Malone was only seeking adventure to escape the friend zone. While I was excited to read this novel, I have to put it aside as I cannot continue with reading it. Maybe I'll try again someday. #didnotfinish

GingerAntics @Austen_Nerd I totally would have played it. I‘m so sorry we didn‘t have it. I think it would have been right up my alley. I kind of hope my kids play rugby (when I have them), but I don‘t want the concussions, so I‘m torn. They‘re more likely to play rippa-rugby much longer, though. 7y
Austen_Nerd @GingerAntics The only time I worried about my son and rugby was when he was playing a game in the rain. The field was muddy and full of mud holes. He had the ball was tackled. He came off the field shouting, how awesome it was, his face was in the puddle and he felt he might had drowned on the field due to the pile of guys on to of him. Lol 7y
