Black Rabbit Hall | Eve Chase
110 posts | 93 read | 2 reading | 154 to read
For fans of Kate Morton and Sarah Waters, heresa magnetic debut novel of wrenching family secrets, forbidden love, and heartbreaking loss housed within the grand gothic manor of Black Rabbit Hall.Ghosts are everywhere, not just the ghost of Momma in the woods, but ghosts of ustoo, what we used to be like in those long summers . . .Amber Alton knows that the hours pass differently at Black Rabbit Hall, her London familys country estate, where no two clocks read the same. Summers there are perfect, timeless. Not much ever happens. Until, of course, it does. More than three decades later, Lorna is determined to be married within the grand, ivy-covered walls of Pencraw Hall, known as Black Rabbit Hall among the locals. But as shes drawn deeper into the overgrown grounds, half-buried memories of her mother begin to surface and Lorna soon finds herself ensnared within the manors labyrinthine history, overcome with an insatiable need for answers about her own past and that of the once-happy family whose memory still haunts the estate.Stunning and atmospheric, this debut novel is a thrilling spiral into the hearts of two women separated by decades but inescapably linked by the dark and tangled secrets of Black Rabbit Hall. From the Hardcover edition.

I have had this on my TBR since 2016, I think it's time to read it.

KarenUK Ooh, I really enjoyed this one…. 2y
TLuvs Oh good 👍 I'm usually not a suspense reader but this one sounded really intriguing! 2y
TLuvs Final rating 3.5. I thought it was going to be a thriller but it turned out to be a noir fiction. Sad and terrible things cause the destruction of a family, multiple generations worth of secrets, and what becomes of families without love but jealousy and hatred instead. I was interested but not captivated. 2y

Black Rabbit Hall is a Cornish country house with an untold history. The story is told by two women separated by decades but linked by the dark and tangled secrets of Black Rabbit Hall. Amber Alton lived there in 1968 and her family still haunts the estate. 30 years later, Lorna Dunaway is determined to be married within the grand, ivy-covered walls of Pencraw Hall, known as Black Rabbit Hall.

EadieB It is a spellbinding page-turner of a story with it's dark secrets. Eve Chase's debut novel is for fans of Kate Morton and Daphne du Maurier and those who love Gothic novels. 4y

These are all standalones that have good ratings on Amazon and Goodreads. Let me know which one you are interested in reading.

Victoriahoperose These all look good. I really can‘t decide. Maybe Blood Orange if I HAD to pick just one. But honestly, I want to read them all 😊 4y
EadieB @Victoriahoperose They are all on my current TBR pile so I will be reading them soon anyway. I guess we should wait to hear what the others think. I used to live in Philly right near the Northeast airport on Avalon St. Moved to Perkasie in 1985. Did you pick out any books yet? 4y
EH2018 I liked The Dry by Jane Harper - so I'm very interested in The Lost Man, but I am up for anything! 4y

EadieB @EH2018 Have you picked any books for us to read? 4y
Victoriahoperose @EadieB I am going to dig around tonight and see what I have on my shelves. I‘ll have a few ideas tomorrow definitely 😊 4y
EadieB @Victoriahoperose Sounds good! 4y
Victoriahoperose @EadieB I don‘t live far from there at all. Right near franklin mills mall! 4y
EadieB @Victoriahoperose I thought so as I recognized the zip code. 4y
EH2018 @EadieB about to post them now... 4y
EadieB @EH2018 Ok great! 4y
Hazel2019 All of these look great! @EadieB @Victoriahoperose @EH2018 I‘d love to read Blood Orange but haven‘t read any of them so I‘m fine if something else gets picked. (edited) 4y
EadieB @Hazel2019 Blood Orange is a good choice. Can we do this again and read The Lost Man next time? (edited) 4y
Hazel2019 @EadieB sure! Or we can start with the lost man. Up to you guys. So many great choices! 4y
EadieB @Hazel2019 If you are fast enough readers then maybe we can send the two books at once. @EH2018 @Victoriahoperose I may be changing the rules and will get kicked out soon. I'm such a rebel! 4y
Hazel2019 @EadieB that‘s an interesting idea! For me it all depends on how busy I‘m at work and how much time I have left over. But no worries, no kicking anyone out haha 😁 4y
EadieB @Hazel2019 We can pick The Blood Orange as our first book to read and then read The Lost Man and make sure we get Blood Orange sent on to the next person and take more time with The Lost Man. But it is cheaper to send the 2 books at once. 4y
Hazel2019 @EadieB 👍🏻 4y
EadieB @Hazel2019 I've got a better idea. I'll send The Lost Man to you and that can be one of your picks since you haven't posted your books yet. You can post some books and have The Lost Man as a pick for one of them and then we can decide if we like one of your books better. (edited) 4y
Hazel2019 @EadieB @Victoriahoperose @EH2018 if we agree we can just use The Lost Man as my pick since @EadieB is willing to mailing it to me ahead of time. What do we think? 4y
EadieB @Hazel2019 It's fine with me! I just didn't want you to think that you couldn't post some books if you wanted to. Sometimes I'm too much of a take charge person! lol If I get too bossy, just tell me to settle down! Won't hurt my feelings as my husband always puts me in my place so I'm used to it. lol 4y
Victoriahoperose @Hazel2019 I am good with any books 😊 happy to read anything you choose! 4y
Hazel2019 @EadieB no worries 😉 I‘ll take a look at what I got today and post. If I didn‘t like your suggestion I would have said something 😁 4y

What secrets does Black Rabbit Hall hold, and will Lorna find out what the secrets of the Alton family are as she explores the Alton's summer home?

BLACK RABBIT HALL was a family saga with hints of foreboding as you turned each page.

BLACK RABBIT HALL had marvelous characters that were loving and endearing and of course there was a villain who ruined it all.

5☆ What a fabulous story! 🖤
I love gothic historical fiction + this one didn‘t disappoint. A crumbling English mansion with seemingly odd mysterious powers that draws people to it? No sense of physical time inside it‘s walls? Sign me up! Within the secrets in its halls two women‘s lives in different time periods cross bringing Lorna the answers she‘s needed but never received from her adopted mother. A must read that I‘m still thinking about.

I went into this book thinking it was going to be a mystery with possibly a side of paranormal and was pleasantly surprised to find it was more an unfolding story of loss, family and a woman trying to find out about herself. It lagged a smidge in the middle but overall I'd recommend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 stars

Wow! One tragic event in the Alton family history shatters their family. The story has a very clear voice in Amber, one of the Alton children, always deemed the sensible one. Her thoughtful perspective on the unfolding events is beautiful and intimate, drawing you in to the heart of her family and inviting you to stay at the Black Rabbit Hall of Summers past.

Sad, touching, mysterious and eloquently told. A fabulous read.

If Rebecca and The Forgotten Garden had a baby, this would be it's first book. It had the atmosphere and vibe of the former with many of the same story components as the latter.

Eve Chase can't quite write like DuMaurier or spin a tale like Morton- but there were glimpses of greatness all throughout this novel, and I would be willing to bet that by her 3rd or 4th novel I won't be able to make this claim anymore. She's one to watch for sure.

I adore a timeslip storyline, and this one, although the past was only the 1960's - not too distant past - it was beautifully atmospheric and certainly summoned the essence of the decade. I loved the innocents and darker seedier side of the characters. It has an air of Kate Morton about it, which isn't a bad thing, although Eve certainly has her own distinct style.

#bookishthisorthat Day3: Romance or Thriller ☀️ I've never been a big fan of romance in books--I prefer it to be an accent to the plot rather than a focus. This one isn't really a thriller though--it's a mystery that I found during my last trip to HPB. Mystery is my second favorite genre, so I can't resist an intriguing one!

This book was so much better than I expected — the writing, the story line, the characters' voices and the way they developed through the story... I expected a beach read, a shallow, easy read for lazy days. Instead I found it gripping, and so touching. Oh, the feels. Love, desperation, mystery, and yet the reader is miraculously spared sappy moments — I'm not a fan of romance reads so anything sappy leads to 🙄🙄🙄
