pickBeverley Lee‘s craftsmanship is outstanding, as a debut novel it stands an equal amongst those crafted by ‘old masters‘.
I only ever intended to tiptoe into a couple of chapters to get a taste, but I literally lost hours as rain lashed at my windows; so absorbed from the very first paragraph. I was snowed-in, cut-off, paralysed with fear, cradling little Gabriel, right there with Beth...Terrified!

pickI love Elizabeth Chadwick and her ability to interweave fictional characters and plots with actual historical events and figures. Daughters of the Grail has a biblical supernatural element that gives this historical fiction sligtly more fantasy depth than some of her others. so-soQuickly captivated by Shepherd's poetic prose. He has a clear ability of painting the surrounding, characters, dark seedy atmosphere of early nineteenth century London. A strong supernatural element carries the otherwise gritty detective mystery through; as it cleverly unfolds. However, I found the concluding final chapters slightly dissapointing and felt a little robbed of a great ending. All lose ends tied up but a little lacklustre.
"I would have been happy to stay here forever," she gazed up at the afternoon sun but it no longer dazzled, "forever and a day," she sighed. "No, I was happy to stay . . . but now I am dead you are taking me home.‘"

With Sprite guidance he is up against the constantly ticking clock to search his heart for his better future. Festively filled with snow and charity; Sprite is a treat to read...yes we all know the moral, but the author has given this well-loved favourite a sparkling modern twist.
so-soI adore a timeslip storyline, and this one, although the past was only the 1960's - not too distant past - it was beautifully atmospheric and certainly summoned the essence of the decade. I loved the innocents and darker seedier side of the characters. It has an air of Kate Morton about it, which isn't a bad thing, although Eve certainly has her own distinct style.

The timeslip between the 1920s and medieval France is so beautifully created with such descriptive elements you really do slip into the pages and become one with the book. Once you start the first page it's pointless trying to put it down, the story stays with you till you finish. Magical!
