Thanks, Obama
Thanks, Obama: My Hopey Changey White House Years | David Litt
A different kind of White House memoir, presidential speechwriter David Litt's comic account of his years spent working with Barack Obama and his reflection on Obamas legacy in the age of Trump Like many twentysomethings, David Litt frequently embarrassed himself in front of his bosss boss. Unlike many twentysomethings, Litts bosss boss was President Obama. At age twenty-four, Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Along with remarks on issues like climate change and criminal justice reform, he was the presidents go-to writer for comedy. As the lead on the White House Correspondents Dinner speech (the State of the Union of jokes), he was responsible for some of President Obamas most memorable moments, including Keegan-Michael Keys appearance as Luther, Obamas anger translator. With a humorists eye for detail and a converts zeal, Litt takes us inside his eight years on the front lines of Obamaworld. In his political coming-of-age story, he goes from starry-eyed college studenta self-described Obamabotto nervous junior speechwriter to White House senior staff. His behind-the-scenes anecdotes answer questions you never knew you had: Whats the classiest White House mens room? Whats the social scene like on Air Force One? How do you force the National Security Council to stop hitting reply-all on every e-mail? In between lighthearted observations, Litt uses his experience to address one of todays most important issues: the legacy and future of the Obama movement in the age of Donald Trump.

I loved this so much!

Funny, smart, interesting, educational (for a political dufus such as myself, anyway) and - yup! - hopeful.

Things cannot possibly still be the same as they were in the pre-pandemic, pre-Trump White House but I truly appreciated this story, which felt like a delightful visit with a successful and humble and witty friend with a cool job.

This memoir is so good! Written by a speechwriter for former President Obama, it explores the interesting and anecdotal tales of the bright years that were the Obama administration. The audiobook is narrated by the author himself, and he is HILARIOUS. It‘s an excellent listen while I‘m waiting in the school pick-up line.❤️🎧❤️

I enjoyed this look at what it was like to work in Obama‘s White House. Litt was a speechwriter and his humor made this book fun, which a lot of political memoirs aren‘t. Of course, he was serious when he needed to be, and I love the ending. It was also a quick read, which is always a plus for me! Thanks for the rec @MallenNC 😊

You‘re 24 years old, and your boss‘s boss is the leader of the free world. You make a bunch of gaffes in his presence, but still manage to get promoted to his senior speechwriting staff. Along with key to the fancy gym. And then you write a memoir about it, including narrating the audiobook quite well too. This was a great Obama admin memoir—recommended!

melbeautyandbooks This was great a listen. I thought he did a great job with the narration. I definitely laughed out loud several times. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m so glad you liked it too, I loved his narration and lighthearted (and very grounded) look at being in so close to what most consider the biggest power trip. I found his book very refreshing compared to other political memoirs I‘ve read, it didn‘t take itself so seriously. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! He was so lovely in person that I worried I wouldn‘t like his book. Thank goodness he writes the way he talks. Beck Dorey-Stein is the other young staffer who published last year. Her book was SO much about her stupid dating choices and not enough about the WH. Thankfully, Litt had a different take on his memoir. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BellaBookNook I hope you enjoy when you pick it up! Definitely consider the audiobook. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @melbeautyandbooks Yes! I‘m not often a fan of author narration, and considering his stories, it could have been horrible. But he hit it out of the park! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m finding I like them for memoirs, hearing them tell me their story, in their own words with their own voice and inflections, intonations, etc... makes it more intimate, and you can hear where they put stress on things as well which I like. 6y

I enjoyed this one, it‘s read by the author on audiobook and wasn‘t at all what I expected. It‘s a real behind the scenes look at what it‘s like working in the White House for just a normal guy....and he‘s quite funny. BarbaraTheBibliophage When all of the Ebola crazy started, I was heavy into treatment for Lyme disease. I couldn‘t help but compare the two—Lyme is actually affecting so many more people but gets no respect. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I used to think only the killers got any respect, chronic suffering not so much.... but then I‘ve watched this whole measles resurgence and just decided humans are very VERY flawed and stupid creatures at heart, and wonder how long it will take to find a cure for Lyme or Ebola, and how long after that until some group decides they built character and the cures are the problem. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I agree. I have some measles experience. My parents didn‘t vaccinate me for religious (or cult, depending on how you look at it). So I had them in my teens during an outbreak at my cult-based school. Not something I‘d wish on anyone. And during another outbreak, my niece died from them. That was the year I got vaccinated for them, just in case. And about Lyme, the controversy behind the treatment is huge. ⬇️ 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was terrible. She was just 14 or 15, I think. I feel the worst for her parents and younger sister. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage That‘s just heartbreaking! I lost a brother, when he was just a baby (different medical story, it was labeled as SIDS) and that was so hard on the family, I can only imagine that it would be infinitely harder with the loss of a teenager. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa SIDS is just awful. Were you around then? Or have memoirs of it? I think both kinds of unexpected loss are horrible. 😰 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I was young, but remember. Now years later medicine knows that my surviving brother & I have a genetic neurological condition. But when I was diagnosed it was unheard of in children, when my first brother came along it did NOT run in families, when he died and my other brother came along my parents insisted he be tested, and he was positive, and only now after the genetic mapping of the 80‘s & lots of other research... 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... is it a genetic mutation that they can actually test for truly. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage The miracles of modern science really cannot be appreciated enough. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage These last 20-30 years in medicine have been amazing. I wish what you know now could have helped your brother, though. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage it really has, but as per our earlier conversation much of it depends on what you believe, if you get the right doctor who has the right idea at the right time, and if science has progressed far enough for us to understand it at all. For me, it was a lot of luck that I got diagnosed and on the right medicine when I did....really really oddball fluke luck. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well either that or I‘m just really stubborn! 😉 6y

This was fun...anyone exhausted by the current political climate will get some relief (comic and otherwise) from revisiting several significant chapters of the Obama administration as told through the POV of a junior speechwriter. They have a lasting inside joke where Obama, while either in a meeting or on location for a speech, will randomly ask David, “So, are we funny?”

I laughed out loud a few times. Sighed in frustration A LOT. Needed this.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I think I read Zach Galifianakis say that one of the reasons Obama didn‘t fit in well in Washington was because he was genuinely funny and so many of the people that he worked with had no sense of humor. 7y
Chelleo I just finished We Were Eight Years in Power and have Fire and Fury next in line so this may be just the break I need from political readings. 7y

I received one of those envelopes, too! I kept the invite, pictured above, and it was definitely one of the coolest pieces of mail I ever received. Just as going to the 2012 Inauguration and Inaugural Ball ranks pretty high on the “highlights of my life” list! 😃❤️😃❤️

Keeping this book close at hand during tonight‘s SOTU. 🤢

Bklover SERIOUSLY?!!! That is soooooo COOL!!!😎 7y
AlaMich Wait, how did you score an invite?!?! 😳 (edited to add that I just saw where you said you were a volunteer 😊) (edited) 7y
MicheleinPhilly I have one of those too! One of my most prized possessions. 7y

CarolynM Wow! What an experience to have had and an excellent souvenir. 7y
alisiakae @Bklover @AlaMich I worked (as a vol) on the 2012 campaign! Our local Field Office organizer could submit a few names in addition to hers to receive an invite, and I was on that list. I have friends that live in DC I stayed with (and one came with me because my invite included a +1)...it was an AMAZING experience. And painful, lol. Painfully cold, and having to walk a ridiculous distance in 👠 that night to get through security barricades. 7y
alisiakae @MicheleinPhilly 🎉🎉🎉 Did you go? 2008 or 2012? I went to 2012. I also bought a pair of engraved Inauguration champagne flutes at the Ball...they are a prized possession. 7y
ReadingSusan This makes me want to weep with sorrow lol. So cool!! 7y
jbhops 😭😭 7y
Bklover Thanks for the info. That is just awesome. Awesome. 7y
PenguinInFlight Those are amazing!! 😍 (I watched the first 10 minutes of the SOTU and I feel like I‘m going to vomit because it made me so angry...I don‘t even have words to articulate my feelings on our the current President. 🤬) 7y
alisiakae @PenguinInFlight Somehow, I‘m still watching. 🤮 7y
PenguinInFlight @4thhouseontheleft I figured if I was going to sleep tonight, I had to turn it off. My blood pressure is still elevated, LOL. 7y
mrsmarch @PenguinInFlight @4thhouseontheleft I‘m still watching on PBS. Bc PBS. I must have a talent for keeping my blood pressure low. 7y

I happen to have both the #audiobook and hardcover of my #currentread checked out from the library right now. It is a cold but sunny day, so I decided to take a 1/2 hour walk in a nearby lakefront park on my way home today. #audiowalk

Really enjoying this one so far! As a 2012 OFA campaign volunteer (I even got to go to the inauguration!), it‘s like hanging out with an old friend.

britt_brooke Great photo! 7y
MallenNC Pretty! I liked this book. I did the audio version, and I liked hearing him tell the story. 7y

First book finished of #24in48. I always thought that I'd love every thing that came out of the Obama White House, but this has proven that is not the case. Litt's memoir just didn't grab me.

JenReadsAlot Bummer... 7y
readsusieread I second @JenReadsAlot ...what a bummer! 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @JenReadsAlot @readsusieread Right? He does a lot of walking you through the campaigns, but I wanted more inside stories. I loved Who Thought This Was a Good Idea. I think I wanted it to be more like that. 7y

A fun and humourous listen. I would recommend to fans of the West Wing TV show who want some Obama nostalgia and some behind the scenes info. Litt offers a self-deprecating view of life as a White House speechwriter, and how it isn't like the West Wing show, but did have its perks, and times that were not so perky. I enjoyed it!

Picked up a nice #bookhaul at the library today!

But this does not bode well for making much progress in February on #MountTBR. 😂😂

I have to go to a leadership conference from 9-4 today. Feels fitting that this would be my next AM read. ❤️

readsusieread Oooh. Hope your conference is okay! So do you have different books going at one time for different parts of the day??? 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @readsusieread Thanks! I do usually read a couple of books at one time. Usually in the mornings I pick something on my kindle but I don't reserve it only for the morning. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
readsusieread @Ashley_Nicoletto I do that too sometimes unless the physical book I'm reading gets good and then I just read that! How are you liking that new Kindle? I'm seriously considering getting one. 7y

Ashley_Nicoletto @readsusieread I love it! But it's a little weird to hold. Mostly because I don't have a case on it. I keep hoping Amazon comes out with one since they pulled the original case they designed. I had to buy a pop socket to put on the back to make it easier to hold. 7y
readsusieread @Ashley_Nicoletto hmmm. 🤔This is good to know! I'm rough on my electronics so I def need a protective case between my device and the world. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto @readsusieread There are third party vendors that make some. I just always love the Amazon ones. Im so disappointed they haven't made a new version yet. 7y
readsusieread @Ashley_Nicoletto 🤞 they release one soon! 7y

Litt is hilarious. I loved reading about his rise as a speechwriter in the Obama White House and his self deprecating anecdotes. It was really funny, not too heavy on policy, and uplifting. It was nice diversion from Litt's game of "How much worse is America since I last checked my phone?" Great, patriotic read?!

Reggie Yeah, @Cathythoughts. I would never survive politics. I can barely watch the news now. 7y
Cinfhen Absurd!!! And I totally agree with you @Cathythoughts how sad for a child.... 7y
TrishB Mad...my son wants to go into politics eventually and I so don‘t want him too..... 7y
MicheleinPhilly 🙄This is why I get the bulk of my news these days from actual newspapers. The 24 hour news cycle is killing us. 7y

I'm not sure if there are any parameters with the #5in2018 or just 5 you commit to reading but here you go. This helps with my goal of catching up on BOTM. Thanks @RebelReader for the tag. I tag @LeahBergen @cobwebmoth and @LauraBeth if you haven't already done it.

This book was wonderful. David Litt was a speechwriter for Obama. He takes you through his journey of seeing one of Obama‘s early speeches to working with him throughout the eight years. It is hilarious at times but will depress you with how much has changed. This book felt ultimately patriotic. It‘s a pick.

rachellayown The publisher sent me a copy of this one. I‘ll have to check it out! 7y
Reggie @rachellayown I hope you like it. There‘s also this coming of age aspect I had no idea would be in here but very much respected. (edited) 7y
Notafraidofwords I really liked this one. Wasn‘t his Weinstein‘s story telling? 7y
See All 9 Comments
Reggie Yes!!!!! What a douche bag. 7y
Reggie @Notafraidofwords I felt so bad for Obama, and have so much more respect. There‘s this interview with Michelle where she said that the one thing she learned from being in the White House was from Barack and his willingness and audacity to rise above and I think this book illustrates that in a lot of instances. 7y
Notafraidofwords @Reggie yes I agree. I think Litt did such a good job with this book. 7y
EmilyM I thought it was so hearfelt--it was ultimately optimistic in the end, which, right now, is pretty hard to be. I found the inside "workings" of the White House (and his comparsions to The West Wing) fascinating. 7y
