dabbe I also have a question: with all the descriptions about nature (verdant verdure, of course), how come Radcliffe never describes Emily's face and eyes being puffy from all that wailing? 🤔😂🤩 13h
ElizaMarie @dabbe yes!!!! I‘m super curious what she looks like —- I wonder if she is an ugly cryer!? (edited) 12h
julieclair Surely she‘s a pretty crier…. like that could be possible… 😂 11h
dabbe @julieclair 😂 I also worry about Emily's physical heart: it's rapturous seeing all the verdant verdure and then completely devastated recalling Valancourt ... she's going to push herself into a heart attack! 😂 11h
dabbe @ElizaMarie Well, since she's so beautiful and dutiful and writes gorgeous sonnets, perhaps she cries beautifully and gorgeously as well. 😂 11h
julieclair @dabbe Perhaps all the swooning and resting because she‘s “feeling ill” will protect her heart… 😂 42m

mcctrish I think we have another clue to the picture pops was kissing fervently ( truth be told, first thing I thought of when they spied the turret in the forest was “vampires, get the fuck away!” 2w

AllDebooks I have to say I'm really enjoying the landscape scenes. 2w
dabbe @AllDebooks They remind me (in a way) of the opening travel scene with Harker going to Transylvania to meet Dracula. Only in that book it's the Carpathian mountains; here it's the Pyrenees. 2w
dabbe I sense a little love in the making for Emily and Valancourt. What a name, btw! 🤩 2w
AllDebooks @dabbe yes, exactly that. 2w
ElizaMarie @dabbe ooooo!!!! I kinda thought so, but couldn‘t figure out the age difference (it might have said and I missed it) 2w
Bookwormjillk Didn‘t V get shot last time they separated 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I think V is close enough to Emily‘s age to make a good match. Her father certainly seems to be encouraging it. 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk hopefully history doesn‘t repeat itself! 2w
AnishaInkspill @Clare-Dragonfly and I think it helps that Aurbet had met the elder Valencourt 2w

My work life continues to be constant, stressful, and exhausting, so today I am having a long overdue self-care day. After seeing all the wonderful Litsy posts regarding all the different October readathons, I decided to have a cozy morning with my coffee and a book I've been meaning to read for decades. Happy Saturday, everyone!!!

Suet624 Congrats on caring for yourself. Enjoy! 1mo
Ruthiella Enjoy. I find work draining as well. Books and the weekend are my refuge. 1mo

The Mysteries of Udolpho remains one of the most important works in the history of European fiction. After Emily St. Aubuert is imprisoned by her evil guardian, Count Montoni, in his gloomy medieval fortress in the Appenines, terror becomes the order of the day. With its dream-like plot and hallucinatory rendering of its characters' psychological states, The Mysteries of Udolpho is a fascinating challenge to contemporary readers.

#FallTreasures

Today‘s prompt is a book you did not finish. Here‘s 6, each a #ADNF for me. Note the thing they have in common—all are #chunksters I have a short attention span sometimes & if a book doesn‘t totally grab me or another competes, I have a hard time staying with them. 🤷🏻‍♀️📚

Some of these (the top row) I do intend to finish one day. I‘m about 2/3 through the tagged book & just need to recommit to Serial Reader & finish it up.

bibliobliss I‘m currently reading “Jonathan Strange” & “1Q84” but they are both slogging a bit for me 😐 3y
5feet.of.fury I couldn‘t even make it through the NOS4A2 tv show. 3y
DebinHawaii @bibliobliss I just have trouble getting through the slog. 😉 3y

DebinHawaii @5feet.of.fury Good to know. I haven‘t watched it as I was going to try and read the book first.😆 3y
TrishB I didn‘t finish Jonathan Strange. Loved NOS4A2 and Outlander. 3y
TiredLibrarian I tried Les Mis 3x before I gave up & figured I could just appreciate the tale in all its other forms 😅 I finished Outlander because it was a book group read, but I detested it, which I know is an #unpopularopinion 3y
Eggs Great collage-I fear chunksters too 3y

Librarybelle @litmuggle I have a few books like that too! 7y
MinDea I had a hard time with the book and so I switched to audio and I really liked it 7y
Librarybelle @MinDea Sometimes audio is the trick...I've had the same thing happen from time to time 7y
