Woman in Cabin 10 (Library)
Woman in Cabin 10 (Library) | Ruth Ware
INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF IN A DARK, DARK WOOD Featured in TheSkimm An Entertainment Weekly Summer Must List Pick A New York Post Summer Must-Read Pick Included in Summer Book Guides from Bustle, Oprah.com, PureWow, and USA TODAY From New York Times bestselling author of the twisty-mystery (Vulture) novel In a Dark, Dark Wood, comes The Woman in Cabin 10, an equally suspenseful and haunting novel from Ruth Ware this time, set at sea. In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10 one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned."

This was frankly better than I expected. For one thing, I always thought it was like a cabin in the woods 😂😂😂😂

My only gripe, because I don't drink, is that I'm so sick of the narrators of thrillers drinking constantly and the whole book taking place in an alcoholic haze.

It‘s a shame because this book was something I looked forward to reading. However, the book ran far too heavily into the realm of unbelievable and I felt myself disconnect from it. It had many holes and sadly just left me unsatisfied. I would love to give a Ruth Ware book another chance and hope to feel differently!

⭐️⭐️ This variation on a locked room mystery, and its unreliable narrator, Lo, didn‘t do it for me. I didn‘t care about her, the “woman,” or how the story unfolded. The requisite twist was okay, but the whole story felt totally pointless. I just can‘t suspend that much logic. My first, and last, Ruth Ware. #bookclub

I read one book previously by this author and wasn‘t in love with her writing but decided to give her another shot. I was much happier with this book compared to the last so I‘ll probably give more of her books a try. I actually really enjoyed this suspenseful thriller. The “who did it” really shocked me but made perfect sense and I really enjoyed the ending. Well written and methodical. This book will remain in my little library. 📚

I absolutely snarfed this book.

The first half was perfection - creepy, tense, shady characters on a luxury cruiseship, Agatha-Christie-meets-Gillian-Flynn energy... I was hooked from the start.

The latter half was OK. Without spoilers, the story became more... contained? And moved more toward domestic noir than whodunit.

A fab thriller.

I made it to 25% and there is still no hint of what the mystery is. A mediocre travel journalist with a messy personal life has her apartment robbed while she is in it, which gives her panic attacks. She is then stuck on the first voyage of a fancy cruise ship for work, full of other desperate journalists and rich boring people. The repartee is not witty. Just not enough here to hold my interest.

LitStephanie

"They did that sort of manly half hug thing, where you're too metrosexual for a handshake and not hip enough for a fist bump." I am not sure about this book, but I like the author's funny commentary.

I read 3 books by this author this month for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville This book was published in 2016 but I have read a couple of recent thrillers and they are very similar in topics.
Lo works for a travel magazine and she will substitute someone from her job to go in this luxury cruise. Lo has drinking problems and when she reported what she saw, probably a missing person, no one believes her. She is an unreliable witness. ⬇️

Gissy The situation gets complicated. Can‘t say more without spoiling the story. What I like: very atmospheric, how characters are described, the story has some twists. What I didn‘t like much: I think the author drag/extends the story too much, too wordy. Some actions are a little unrealistic, maybe? But still, there is something about her writing style that I like, I think is how she describes the atmosphere, I can picture it very well 3.5⭐️ 2y

Laura, a travel journalist, is on the maiden voyage of a luxury cruise ship, when she hears a scream, a splash, and a bloody smear on the balcony of the neighboring cabin. No one is in that cabin or reported missing and Laura is an unreliable witness with her excessive drinking and sleep deprivation. I generally like “closed room” mysteries, but I found the protagonist annoying. Good use of emails/news clips interspersed, but only a so-so story.

👍
-fast read, suspenseful.
-unreliable narrator with anxiety problem (whom I found exasperating later in the story).
-use of social media to heighten suspense.
-uncertainty over what happens after the final pages.
👎
-long list of names made difficult to follow (weak characterisation).
-cliche after cliche.

Overall, a fun (& forgettable) diversion from my stress of moving house. I think her later novels are better.
