I really enjoyed this story and loved the characters. I told my daughter, “When your Dad and I can't live independently anymore, can you find me a luxury senior's home where the residents solve mysteries and drink lots of wine?“

#gottacatchemall @PuddleJumper (prompt 47: Polteageist, Cosy mystery)

kwmg40 I'm using this for prompt 25 (An author “everyone“ has read except you) of #52bookclub because almost everyone I know has recommended this book to me.

One recommendation was from my daughter's friend. I asked, “Why would young people be interested in a series featuring senior citizens?“ His reply; “I like to think that, when I'm that old, my life would be just as interesting as those of the characters,“ which I thought was lovely!

I‘ve not read much historical fiction from this time period, and I liked how each character explored a different aspect or event of 1969.

Using example sentences from 12 different dictionaries, Burrows constructs an alphabetical collection of flash stories that are further arranged under specific words (ie Cc: cookery features 1 story; Bb blasphemy features 2 stories etc). There is a playful tone to several of the entries & although I suspect that I won't remember much of the book several months from now, it was a fun experience. I am using this for #yellowspine #52bookclub

Not really sure where to start where my review of this one. There are several elements of this that I loved: a story within, there was one particular twist that is one of my favorite twists in all of Sager's books & the main character. Then there were several elements that I disliked: a twist towards the end that I frankly hated, the main character while often endearing was also frequently annoying. In terms of ranking: second from last place.

vivastory I am using this one for #morethan40chapters for #52bookclub 2mo
Leftcoastzen Oh boy , it‘s on my TBR 2mo
vivastory @Leftcoastzen You might feel different. I know a lot of readers loved this one. I will say that in typical Sager fashion it's a page turner. I read the whole book today. 2mo

Master Key | Masako Togawa

Wow, I loved this twisty (& twisted) book filled with mysteries that takes place in an apartment building for women residents leading up to the building being moved due to road construction. A master key which disappears drives much of the story. I literally laughed out loud in surprise at the end & it had me rereading the very beginning. What a macabre gem! I am using this for #toldinnonchronologicalorder for #52bookclub

BarbaraBB This is such a fun read! I‘ve meant to read more by him ever since. 3mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB I really liked “The Lady Killer“ I don't see that Pushkin Vertigo has pub. any others by him. I just ordered two other books from Pushkin Vertigo that I'm excited about 3mo

vivastory @BarbaraBB I ordered “Crush“ by Frédéric Dard & “The Tattoo Murder“ by Takagi. Have you read either one? I've heard good things about both, esp about Dard who has frequently been compared to Simenon 3mo
LeahBergen This sounds fab! Stacked! 3mo
batsy I loved this too! Masako Tagawa was a woman and her bio on Wikipedia is so intriguing. If memory serves me right think the place in this book was inspired by her childhood home. @BarbaraBB 3mo

Ari Thór receives a job offer in a small village in the north of Iceland. He immediately accepts & moves there from Reykjavik. Thór arrives right at the onset of winter, which is a lot more intense than anything he has experienced. At first his duties as a police officer are more along the lines of assisting community members than investigative, as there's no real crime to speak of. This changes after the suspicious death of a renown (CONT)

vivastory author in the local theater & subsequently a woman who is found bleeding to death. I was wrongfooted by this one to the very end, the mystery is very cleverly constructed. This is book one in a series called Dark Iceland & in typical Nordic Crime fashion it is moody & existential with damaged characters. I loved it. This was my #lockedroommystery for #52bookclub 3mo
Branwen Oh man, this sounds absolutely FANTASTIC! I need to seek it out! 3mo

The first book I finished in January was The Christmas Holiday. I listened an audiobook. The story itself didn't really grab me. It could have been more fleshed out. Both characters are suffering from loss and want to get away from the Christmas holidays. In the end, life offers them a second chance and I think they deserve it.

I had some mixed feelings about this one. With dual timelines, we are following the life story of a young Indian woman who was born in 1900. In 2011, an American actress is part of a movie set in Devonshire and is staying at the historic estate where they are filming. In 2001, a young Indian man is too busy with work to attend his great-grandmother's funeral. Ten years later, he is having a life crisis and finds himself caught up in reading the ⬇

I was 100% engaged in this book for the first 2/3 or so. The pacing is excellent, and I loved all the characters in both timelines. Riley captures India well, and also does a wonderful job with the tumultuousness of the first half of the 20th century. Where things fell off for me a bit was the way she chose to end some of these storylines. I knew that it was going to be sad because of what we're told in the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) beginning, but it felt like she just decided to unnecessarily double-down on a lot of it, and it went from being reasonably sad/bittersweet to downright tragic/multi-generational trauma. I also felt like the ending of the modern timeline (re: Anthony) was a weird direction to go - it felt unnecessary.

However, I'll also admit that “A Novel“ isn't usually my thing - I like my happy endings - so I can definitely see this book having an ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) appeal for people who enjoy this type of book more than I do. I loved pretty much every character in this story and couldn't look away from the train wreck I saw coming.

Waylon cautiously sniffing out crime 😂 A soft pick, as I'm anticipating most of this series will be. Fun to read, but falls apart a little if you think about it too hard haha But these are definitely heavy on the nostalgia factor. #NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle
