While he provides a compelling case for de jure housing segregation, I found it was buried through the dry recitation of facts within a somewhat repetitive argument. Instead of a fact filled data dump, more analysis of the impacts of these policies & actions would have made this a more compelling read. As it is, it would have been better as a long-form essay than a book. But despite that, it‘s still worth reading.

My #DoubleSpin for February was nice to read, but there were no mindset-shifting insights like I heard so many other readers have had. I did notice that there is another book with the same title but by Margaret Smith, and even the covers look similar so I wonder if I read the wrong book and everyone in the Minimalism community was raving about the other one? At least it's #OffMyShelf.

Poetry just isn't my thing. I absolutely love The Bell Jar, but I would need to take a class to understand her poems, and even then, I think I would struggle. I'm glad that I finally read this short book, even though it took #BookSpin to get me to pick it up. At least now it's #OffMyShelf

Doing my best to read like my old self BD (Before Depression) and I'm hoping fun little challenges like #readingbracket2025 and #offmyshelf bingo will help. Spent a few hours making this bracket, which, it turns out, is a fun way to deal with anxiety. 🙃

The tagged book was my favorite of 4 reads in January 2025. For context, pre-2020, I used to read 12-15 books a month. Not gonna shame myself though. At least I'm reading.

Pickpick

Rachel and Drew are dealing with the care of their aging mom who has Alzheimers and often doesn't recognize them. On one of Rachel's visits, her mom tells her about a book she wants her to find. The sisters find the book hidden in their mom's sewing room, a book about a woman named Tomoe Gozen who was a samurai warrior in Japan in the 1100s. They wonder what it has to do with their mom, and why she wanted to make sure they had it.

New to me author #OffMyShelf

The tagged was almost painful to read. Overhyped, boring, and disappointing. No character development, no world building, & not really a cozy fantasy. I skimmed most of it & still@knew exactly what was happening.

It‘s off my shelf & onto my PangoBooks bookshop.

But at least this book did finally get me my first #2025OffMyShelf bingo!

Ruthiella You are half way there to completing the board! 👏👏👏 1w

wanderinglynn @Laughterhp I‘m really baffled by all the high ratings. 1w
Bookzombie I‘m unstacking this one now. So many other books to read. 🙂 1w
wanderinglynn @Bookzombie a lot of people did like it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I agree there are a lot of other books to be read. (edited) 1w

One last book done for January!

I appreciate WCW for basically inventing the casual American style of poetry & that his subject matter centered on everyday circumstances of life and the lives of common people. However, WCW is not my favorite poet. While I like some of his poetry, I also don't care for most of it & my rating reflects this. The great thing about poetry is that there‘s something for everyone.

I sneakily read my February #Roll100 book already. 🤭 At just 152 pages, it‘s fits the “Shortest on TBR” #OffMyShelf prompt.

I prefer the Wayfarer books but Martha Wells is correct with her blurb here, “An optimistic vision of a lush, beautiful world.” Not a lot of plot or tension. Sibling Dex and Mosscap visit the settlements on Panga before they approach The City. Such a positive view of what humanity is capable of.

Banned book #OffMyShelf

While I appreciate this book for its literary importance and for its themes/concepts, I did not find this book interesting or easy to read due to the execution & presentation. Plus, the Fordism got a bit cheesy. "Oh Ford!"

So, I am glad I finally read it, but I think there are better classics that speak to the same or similar themes and concepts that Huxley presents.

Luke-XVX It wasn‘t until I read this that I got the pop cultural reference of Smashing Pumpkins naming one of their songs “Soma” 2w
wanderinglynn @Luke-XVX I totally forgot about that song! But now it makes so much more sense. 2w
Luke-XVX Same thing when I finally read The Outsider by Camus and and then I knew the significance of “Killing an Arab” by The Cure 2w

Ruthiella I loved this book, but read it as a teenager. I might feel differently now. 2w
wanderinglynn @Luke-XVX yep! I remember connecting that one in high school. 👍🏻😀 2w
wanderinglynn @Ruthiella yes, it‘s interesting to see whether books we loved when we were children still hold true for us at different points in adulthood. 2w
