The Backyard Bird Chronicles
The Backyard Bird Chronicles | Amy Tan
15 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
A gorgeous, witty account of birding, nature, and the beauty around us that hides in plain sight, written and illustrated by the best-selling author of The Joy Luck Club With a foreword by David Allen Sibley Unexpected and spectacular Ann Patchett, best-selling author of These Precious Days "The drawings and essays in this book do a lot more than just describe the birds. They carry a sense of discovery through observation and drawing, suggest the layers of patterns in the natural world, and emphasize a deep personal connection between the watcher and the watched. The birds that inhabit Amy Tans backyard seem a lot like the characters in her novels. David Allen Sibley, from the foreword Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time through daily entries, thoughtful questions, and beautiful original sketches. With boundless charm and wit, author Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world. In 2016, Amy Tan grew overwhelmed by the state of the world: Hatred and misinformation became a daily presence on social media, and the country felt more divisive than ever. In search of peace, Tan turned toward the natural world just beyond her window and, specifically, the birds visiting her yard. But what began as an attempt to find solace turned into something far greateran opportunity to savor quiet moments during a volatile time, connect to nature in a meaningful way, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired.

Just a lovely time. Really all about one person's observations of the birds in her backyard. Wasn't sure what the tone would be from the preface, since it had a memoir feel, and mentioned her mother's repeated threats of self-harm, but the rest of the book is full of faithful reproductions of excerpted journal entries and truly gorgeous illustrations by the author.1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? While Covid-19 and wildfires are mentioned a few times, it really isn't a story of the author's life outside interactions with birds. Sadly, this comes with the reality that certain birds are sick, injured or die. Overall, it has an endlessly appreciative, curious, pleasant tone. 8h
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I can't say it made me eager to go out and explore this author's fiction offerings, but certainly it should be taken into account that reading one author's first hand, casual non-fiction is not the best way to assess that person's creative writing potential. 8h
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Side note: It was fun to recognize the overlap in bird species I see at my own feeder, and identify with some of the reactions to observed behaviors.

I have tried a few of Amy Tan‘s fiction books and didn‘t connect well with them. This journal and collection of drawings however was delightful!

She‘s an incredibly talented artist, and I found her observations and commentary on her backyard visitors funny and interesting. Highly recommend if you also like birdwatching or feeding your locals.

MemoirsForMe I‘m looking forward to reading this one even more now. 21h
Hooked_on_books I have very little interest in birds and I loved this one! I found her so relatable and am very impressed with her drawings. 2h

This isn't book related, but I have to share my newest obsession. I got a birdfeeder with a camera for Christmas. So far, it has "caught" 14 different species. Here are a few of my favorite pictures so far.

Another pleasant little book about birds, but make it by Amy Tan!?! Yes please! This is just a delight for nature lovers and the illustrations are superb, which Tan taught herself to do. This is another one of those to dip in and out of throughout the year as it doesn‘t need to be read in one go. I did lost n to her narrate it though which also added some extra depth to the experience. So I guess do bot: print and audio!

TEArificbooks I am currently reading this one slowly, just a little at a time each day. 3mo

I saw&heard Amy Tan talk about her new book The Backyard Bird Chronicles. I didn‘t know she learned how to draw and paint animals only a few years ago!I‘m not sure why but I was a bit disappointed. She was witty&the audience loved her. But I had the feeling the jokes were a bit rehearsed &she probably says the same thing to every audience on her book tour? Then again I guess that‘s normal? Anyway, not worth over 40$ in a shitty seat.

I‘m not a birder, and I only picked it up as it‘s Amy Tan. It‘s glorious. Not too science-y, yet informative, and with Tan‘s ability to create stories, each journal entry about her observations becomes stories with characters and personalities. Who knew Tan is an exceptional artist? This has humor, beauty, and Tan‘s writing. Perfect.

My kids say my thorough enjoyment of this book means I‘m officially old. Pictured: the owl that used to hang out in our yard.

Texreader Sounds like just my kind of book. I must be old too! 😂 8mo

“With both fiction and birds, I think about existence, the span of life, from conception to birth to survival to death to remembrance by others. I reflect on mortality, the strangeness of it, the inevitability. I do that daily, and not with dread, but with awareness that life contains ephemeral moments, which can be saved in words and images, there for pondering, for reviving the bird and my hear…”⬇️

Turns out that not only is Amy Tan a great writer, she‘s also a terrific artist. She recently rediscovered her joy in drawing when she was drawn in by watching the birds in her yard. In this book, she chronicles 6 years of bird watching and feeding with her own illustrations, whether formal portraits or alongside less formal jottings. This book is a complete delight (and I‘m not necessarily very interested in birds).

batsy Sounds and looks really good! 10mo
Anna40 Great! I‘ll see her in 2 weeks at the National Writers Series in Traverse City and the ticket comes with a copy of the book. Very much looking forward to it! 10mo
