Rose Daughter | Robin McKinley

Award-winning author Robin McKinley returns to one of our most enduring fairy tales to tell an enthralling story of love and redemption Once upon a time, a wealthy merchant had three daughters . . . and when the merchants business failed, he and his three daughters left their grand house in the city and moved to a tiny cottage buried deep in the countryside. The youngest daughter, Beauty, is fascinated by the long, thorny stems of an unknown plant that overwhelms the neglected cottage, and she tends it until, the following summer, its rich, fragrant flowers are the most glorious things the sisters have ever seen: roses. An old woman tells Beauty: Roses are for love. Not . . . silly sweethearts love but the love that makes you and keeps you whole. . . . Theres an old folk-tale . . . there arent many roses around any more because they need more love than people have to give em . . . and the only thing thatll stand in for love is magic, though it aint as good. Theres no magic in the town of Longchance, but, the old woman adds, Beauty may not know that this is the result of a sorcerers battle that happened many years ago, a battle that left a monster, or perhaps a beast, in an enchanted palace somewhere in the deep forest . . . and a curse concerning a family of three sisters.

This is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

While a lot of the story is familiar (being a retelling of course) there are some interesting additions like dreaming of long corridors, green witches, sorcerers, starlight creatures, and visions, which I am fairly sure aren‘t in the original versions!

I personally think it would take more than a few nights of stilted conversation to fall in love with someone, but it was still an enjoyable listen ☺️

rubyslippersreads I haven‘t read this one, but the same author has another Beauty & the Beast retelling I love: 3mo

@SayersLover did you know there is a rewriting to Beauty? I've just found it

xicanti It‘s actually McKinley‘s second stab at the story, from a different angle, rather than a sequel to the first! 1y
hannah-leeloo Oooooh sounds great to me as I loved Beauty @xicanti thank you 😊 1y
SayersLover I had no idea! Thanks, I‘ll have to keep an eye out for that one too. @hannah-leeloo 1y

So much better than Beauty - The only adjective that comes to mind is cinematic. The visualization from the writing is EPIC!!! #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann

I have a few Beauty & the Beast variations on my TBR and really wanted to read at least one for February's #fairytalereadingchallenge @Charityann I settled on Rose Daughter as it is one I've been meaning to reread. I read it back in the day, probably high school, but not since, and only remember thinking that I preferred McKinley's other B&B retelling, Beauty, better. All in all, I still definitely like Beauty better. This one has a lot of

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) potential, with likable characters and an interesting premise, but I never really felt like I got real answers concerning the curse and what the point of Beauty being there was. I also wanted more time with Beauty and the Beast together - a few conversations didn't seem like enough for Beauty to be willing to risk everything to save his life. Still, a fun and enjoyable read, even if it was on the soft side of a pick for me. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I'm also personally weirded out whenever a B&B variation ends with the Beast still a beast. Like that's just kind of creepy to me 😂 3y

Librarybelle Oh! I am unfamiliar with this one! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle - It was fun for a one-off read, but didn't become one I see myself rereading a lot like I do some of her other books. I do love the way she writes Beauty's family, though, with sisters and a father who genuinely care about one another. 3y

Book 3 done for #24in48 & #24B4Monday I liked it but I didn‘t love it. It was a tad slow in the middle and not that original a take on the Beauty and the Beast tale. I have read many variations of this tale and this is not my favorite. It is a well done audiobook and I do like McKinley‘s writing and I will read more of hers. @24in48 @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65

Ok, I'm done (for now?). I just had to put this one back on the shelf.... I finally got into it (!), and then it got slow again.... and I mean super slow. I'm not finding much interesting, I can read maybe a page or two before falling asleep, and have seriously been considering adding it to my dnf pile... which is super small. Anyone read this that can provide me with any solid reason to finish it? I'm 65% off the way through it....

EclecticBookLover Ooh! I may have to get this one! I read Beauty years ago and tried this one as well but had a tough time with it. I think I had overloaded myself with Beauty and the Beast retellings at that point. Thanks for posting! 7y

While I never tire of various retellings of Beauty and the Beast, this one did leave me wanting a bit more. Overall it was well done but I just wasn't as satisfied as I expected to be. There were times where I found that paragraphs were verbally muddied and a bit hard to slog through. Better pacing than Beauty by the same author. But I just wanted a bit more.

I finished Rose Daughter before I went to bed last night and I've been trying to think of how to describe it since. It's the author's second retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I read the first retelling, Beauty, years ago and loved it. The whole book has a dream like quality to it, especially the last 100 pages. Parts of the book are heartwarming, and parts of it are disorienting and uncomfortable.

cottagelantern Beauty has always had a reoccurring dream of walking down a long, dark corridor, knowing that something was waiting for her at the end. That's how I felt reading this story, except I had this intuitional feeling that the ending would be a good one. However, once I reached the ending, I only felt confused. Now that I've had time to think about it, I appreciate the ending. 7y
cottagelantern It shows that knowledge comes with a price, and that even though sad changes can be permanent, it doesn't mean that happiness is impossible. This book wasn't my favorite, but I appreciate the lessons it taught and the story it told. 📚🌹✨ 7y
