Around the world in eighty days/Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (bilingual edition/dition bilingue) | Jules Verne
162 posts | 303 read | 9 reading | 99 to read
The story starts in London on Tuesday, October 1, 1872. Fogg is a rich English gentleman living in solitude. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club. Having dismissed his former valet, James Foster, for bringing him shaving water at 84 F (29 C) instead of 86 F (30 C), Fogg hires a Frenchman by the name of Jean Passepartout as a replacement. At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for 20,000 (equal to about 1.6 million today) from his fellow club members, which he will receive if he makes it around the world in 80 days. Accompanied by Passepartout, he leaves London by train at 8:45 P.M. on Wednesday, October 2, 1872, and is due back at the Reform Club at the same time 80 days later, Saturday, December 21, 1872.

Nothing, do you say? Nothing, perhaps, but a charming woman, who—improbable as it may appear— made him the happiest of men.
Truly would you not, for less than that, make the tour of the world?

What a pleasurable book to read! I just loved traveling around the world with Philéas Fogg and Passepartout. A lot happens in these pages: misunderstandings, adventures, funny encounters, etc. And there is a lot of wit and humor, with also many surprises. It also educates the reader in an entertaining way about time, rules of physics, etc.

A translation of the classic novel. I read it as a child but cannot remember now whether it was the original or a version adapted for children. I've seen the 1960s film version, a cartoon version, and bits of the TV version but I still saw David Niven as Phileas Fogg in my mind's eye while reading. It was a borrowed book, so I have no idea why Wallace and Grommit are on the cover.

Ruthiella That is an odd choice for the cover. 6mo

In this classic adventure story, a wealthy gentleman, Phileas Fogg, makes a bet that he can travel around the world in eighty days. Fogg and his servant set off immediately, determined to win this race against time. Little do they know they aren't making the journey alone....Fogg has been fingered as the culprit in a bank robbery, and a detective in hot pursuit is trailing them as they cross every continent.

I am currently finishing off books which have been on my shelf unread since more than 15 years atleast! Here goes one!

While this book was good for the adventurous soul, it has certain racial undertones which I'm sure was acceptable at the time but will not work today.

Ruthiella Yes, that‘s often an issue with older books. 🙁 13mo

I can't believe I've never read this before. I think I've seen so many adaptations that I thought I did.
I enjoyed this quick voyage around the world, adventurous with a hint of suspense.

Well, this wasn't quite what I was expecting. First of all, there's no hot air balloon? But there IS a whole chapter on Mormonism? It was a quick read, with weird moments of racism and not nearly enough sight seeing.

Clare-Dragonfly No hot air balloon?! I‘m quite certain that the abridged version I read so many times as a child had a hot-air balloon scene 🤔 2y
lauraisntwilder @Clare-Dragonfly Nope! No balloon. I was so surprised when I realized they'd made it all the way to the US without a balloon that I googled it, just to make sure I hadn't missed it somehow. All the film/TV adaptations have balloons and so do some of the book covers. 2y

I finished this book yesterday but didn‘t get around to posting. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My main gripe about this book is that there‘s nary a hot air balloon! There are tons of book covers with hot air balloons on them, so it was disappointing that Fog did not travel by balloon. But this was an entertaining read nonetheless!

#bookspinbingo

TheAromaofBooks I thought the same thing! I feel like literally 80% of the editions for this book have a hot air balloon on the cover, to the point that I thought the ENTIRE journey was going to be by balloon, and instead - none!? What the heck! 😂 3y

February #Bookreport. I did not get a ton of stuff read this month. Too many chunksters on the list! Still working through most of them. Hopefully March will be more impressive. There were all good and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite. Probably Katalin Street or Drive My Car or The Last Will and Testament of Senhor da Silva Araujo.

I've been watching Around the World in 80 Days on PBS with David Tennant. It's excellent! But it is so far off from the source material! About the only thing the same is that there is a wager and some people are traveling around the world. haha! 🚝 🚢 🐘

So then I realized that my own understanding of the source material might be a bit off as I believe I've only ever read the Classics Illustrated version, eg. the comic book. ⬇

DrexEdit My Mom bought tons of Classics Illustrated & to this day I have comic book versions only of dozens of classics in my head. So I am now tackling the 80 Days source material on @SerialReader. I'm finding that the comic book was probably pretty close to the source. And that the PBS/Masterpiece version is even further off from the source than I had even imagined. It's interesting trying to reconcile all the different versions in my head! 📙 📘 📕 😜 3y

Due to this book I am convinced we should read, read, read! Finished this wonderful book yesterday. It was one of those books I really wanted to finish but I didn‘t want it to end. The pace was slow however, as most classics are. I never watched the movie & don‘t plan to let it destroy the book for me either 😆. I realized many movies must‘ve been inspired by scenes from this book. #aroundtheworldin80days #julesverne #classics

rockpools I love this idea! Going to post a list now 😊 Also, what @imyril asked - a different list each month? (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks @imyril - Well I am technically using the same list except with a replacement for the one I read haha so you can post the same list, a different list, or the same books in a different order - whatever works for you!! 5y

TheAromaofBooks @RachelO - sorry, missed your question at first. It's whatever you want - I am using January's list but replacing the book I read. I may end up reading some of the books on my list even if they aren't chosen, so it will change a bit every month. 5y
rockpools @TheAromaofBooks 👍 Perfect- thank you! 5y
llwheeler I'm almost finished my Jan book! I think I will keep my same list 🙂 5y

Melismatic @TheAromaofBooks ooh ok! Works for me! I‘ll get my list together now 🥰 5y

I was surprised at how entertaining and readable this classic ended up being. Verne's heroes are always strong, silent, scientific men, and Fogg is no exception. We never really find out why he takes on his bet, but he calmly deals with every delay that appears. My favorite part is when his servant rescues the girl, but the girl views Fogg as the hero and falls in love! 😆 Published in 1872, so there is definitely a sense of inherent white ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) supremacy as they pass through areas like India and Japan, but this was the height of colonialism, so in a weird way it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be?? All in all, Verne weaves a fun and entertaining tale that I definitely recommend.

jb72 @TheAromaofBooks Yes that is fine. Thanks for joining us! I haven‘t read that book yet, but I own it. 5y
Andrew65 Thanks fir reposting. 😊👍 Yes please if you tag me @Andrew65, allows me to keep up with all the posts. I miss posts otherwise and I do like to put a comment on each and every post. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @jb72 @Andrew65 - sounds good!! I just don't want to annoy anyone with unwanted tagging 😋 5y
Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks I love the tags. 😊 5y

A few days ago I introduced my personal challenge for the year - a monthly #BookSpin ! The concept is simple - make a list of 20 books languishing on your TBR. On the 2nd of every month, I draw a number, & you read that book sometime during the month!

January's number - 18!! I get to read the tagged book! Be sure to tag me with the book you get to read, and let me know when you read it!
@imyril @llwheeler @Lcsmcat @Butterfinger @mabell

TheAromaofBooks And just a reminder - sometimes books linger on the TBR because, deep down, we don't really want to read them. Please don't feel like you have to force yourself to read the book you drew. The challenge is to give the book a chance! If your review of the book is to say you bailed on it for any reason, that is A-OK. No pressure here. A DNF still means the book is off your list, and that's the goal. Happy reading!! ❤ (edited) 5y
ljuliel Good idea, and good luck 👍🏼🍀 5y
robinb Great idea! Have fun! 😊 5y

veritysalter What a great idea @TheAromaofBooks I have an out of control TBR pile and am too much of a mood reader. I shall definitely give this a go. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @veritysalter - I would love to have you join! I'll be sure to tag you when it's time to post February's 20 books!! And if you want to join this month, you still can - just count off books on your shelf until you get to 18, or something along those lines. 😊 5y
veritysalter @TheAromaofBooks I‘m ok for January; I‘ve just started European Travels for Monstrous Gentlewomen, it‘s 700 pages, so I may be a while. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @veritysalter - oh my goodness, that is a SERIOUS chunkster!!! Good luck! 5y
llwheeler Woohoo! I'm excited for my Jan read - hope you enjoy Around the World! I read it as a kid and liked it - I think it was an abridged edition though. 5y
mabell I couldn‘t be more happy with my #18! (Though I only chose 20 books I would be excited to get to, so no matter what it will be a win-win 😄) 5y
TheAromaofBooks @llwheeler - My dad is a big fan of Verne, so I read several of his books growing up, but somehow never got to this one. It's also been years since I've read 20,000 Leagues, so I'm hoping to get to that one this year as well. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - I like your strategy!!! 😁 5y
LaraReads This is a really great idea! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @LaraReads - thanks!! We'll be doing another spin on February 2, so you can feel free to jump in if you like!! 5y
Linsy I love this!!! Definitely joining in for February. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Linsy - I will be drawing the number this Sunday (Feb 2) so if you decide to post a list, be sure to tag me and I will let you know what the magic number is!! 😁 5y

Aawwww, spotted this on my way to a job in Altona North!
62 Cyclamen Avenue.
I found a couple of classics so I picked them up. Must make a note to add something back one day.

ljuliel Wow, that is jammed full ! 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @ljuliel Sure is! I tidied and then lightened it a little 😉 5y

Encontré el audiolibro y lo estoy escuchando cada noche. Me gusta mucho Julio Verne.

(Day 21 - #AllAroundTheWorld)

*Probably an obvious choice here, but I haven‘t seen it used yet. Jules Verne is at top left; his illustrator, Hippolyte Léon Benett is pictured just right of Verne. All of the images pictured are Benett‘s; he was the most prolific illustrator of Verne‘s books. If you‘ve read it, you‘ll recognize the scenes. If you haven‘t, maybe you saw the movie? Anyway—Great book & especially great for kids. ♥️

arlenefinnigan I was hoping someone would pick this! 5y
gradcat @arlenefinnigan I was shocked that no one did—I thought it would be on here several times! Maybe it‘s too on the nose? 😂🤣😂 5y
