A transgender teen receives a superhero's mantle upon his death and it transforms her body into the one she's always wanted. Such an interesting way to frame this coming of age tale. Some characters lacked dimension, but overall a good story and worth the read.
All right, Group Q. Here‘s what I‘ve got. The tagged is a YA trans superhero novel. Hola Papi is NF, sort of a memoir I believe (?). Brickmakers is tragic gay love I think. Manhunt is trans dystopian horror. Gods of Want is short stories in a fabulist style. I‘ve got other options if we‘re not feeling any of these. These are kind of the first that came to my hand. pickI am happy I didn‘t bail like I was planning to.After about 80 pages of casual references to suicidal thoughts and a nonstop parade of dreams getting crushed I was about done.But I kept going and after about 100 pages, the book got a lot better.Though I have to say, having a villain‘s plan be a almost carbon copy of an Agents of SHIELD season really took me out of it.Even though the book came out before that season, it was still disappointing. 4⭐️
pickIt‘s so interesting to me that certain tropes already date even LGBTQ+ books written by queer and trans people. I wonder if Daniels would have gone easier on the trauma details if she were writing this today. #readathon @DeweysReadathon

pickThis #YA novel had many of the things I love in comics: quick pacing, plenty of action, different flavors of villians, personal moral struggles, high stakes, and a slew of interesting supporting characters. This origin story is different because Danny's (the teen main character) family dynamic affects her superhero-ness just as much as her brand-new super powers. I'll be reading the 2nd right away in '21! #dw2020reads #lgbtq+
pickThis is a fun story. It was so fun I was a little blind sided by some of the darker moments and violence. I wish that Danny had more support among her friends and family, but I imagine that her lack of support was probably one of the least fantastical parts. I guess it needs to be said, just in case: trans women are women.
Given that She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named is doubling and tripling down on her bigoted and transphobic statements, I thought I‘d share some trans centered books.

pickThe superhero headquarters and exploration of new powers was really gratifying. There were enough twists to keep it curious, and I did break down a little bit when Danny was explaining to her mother how living as a boy would have eventually killed her. Also like that one of the villains is a TERF.
The amount of times that Danny has had to say “I‘ve never been a boy” is breaking my heart. This book is great though.
Spent last night reading some more of my book, with the Netflix fireplace on in the background. Now that my 2 days full of appointments are done, I'm ready to enjoy my Christmas vacation!

pickA good friend recommended this and I found myself intrigued. Since then, this has been sitting on my TBR shelf for many months and I‘m beyond glad I finally picked it up because once I did I was UNABLE to put it down. It‘s a quirky mix of trans identity, coming of age, superhero adventure, and alternate history. What I loved most was the absolute joy this managed to capture at times when the plot could have easily lent itself to anger or despair.

pickPhew, this book was a lot of fun. And the superhero world was a prefect backdrop to discuss trans issues. Danny receives super powers, and with it, the body she‘s always wanted. I loved the transpride through hardship and am excited to read the second one.
But now, it‘s time to sculpt some miniature skulls with clay.

Danny is a closeted trans girl when the superhero Dreadnought dies in front of her, passing on his powers. Her body is instantly brought to its ideal form: not only does she now have superpowers, her body matches her gender. What follows is action-packed supervillain fighting but also tough & real stuff about a teen facing transphobia. Highly recommended!
This is so great so far! I think it's such a cool premise: teenage trans girl in the closet unwillingly takes on the mantle of a superhero and her new superhero body also matches her gender. I also loved how instead of turning her body into a cis girl's, Daniels insists on the validity of trans girlhood and gives her a trans girl's body. Also: if she will have me, I think Doc Impossible is my future wife. #TransBooks #QueerBooks

With the near constant overtime at long, LONG last under control, I can finally use my weekend for it's intended purpose.
With all the talk of being invisible, mythmaking, secrets, hidden truths, "I don't believe people ever change, but I've changed", etc., this is a more effective reading/listening combo than I expected.

Danny goes through a butt tonne of #changes in this book - not the least being an instant change to her ideal female body. This is a mixed blessing as Danny is trans, but she was also in the closet until being unceremoniously outed by the surprise inheritance of superpowers.
I freaking adore this book.

These violently orange boys' shoes made me think of the scene in DREADNOUGHT where Danny's relieved she can finally shop from the sedate girls' selection. I always had the opposite problem--I wanted the most garish shoes imaginable, but everything was grey or pink.
Now I make my own shoe purchases, I don't give a fig what gender my shoes are marketed to, and I have feet small enough to fit little boys' runners. So here we are.
Got my TBR stack ready for this weekend's #24in48 #readathon! I like to read slim books during readathons. Tiny books make me feel like I'm accomplishing more reading, and gives me lots of opportunities to take breaks. Plus, I will be away for part of the readathon, so small books are easier to shovel into my brain. ❤️📚😊
pickI adored this. Most of the buzz I've seen focuses on the stellar trans rep, but the book is also deeply concerned with how superhero tropes WORK and what it means to take up a heroic mantle. It's a must-read for anyone who's interested in the mechanics of these types of stories.
On top of the meta stuff, Danny is a fabulous person and a fabulous hero. I can't wait for the next part of her story. #queerbooks
I stayed up late reading DREADNOUGHT, and when I finally fell asleep I dreamed I attended a high school that offered courses on comics tropes (and musical dining).
Danny should be everyone's hero - she thinks she has problems until she inherits superpowers by accident and is outed as a trans lesbian to everyone. Not only does Danny have to deal with a new body and people acting like dicks, but she has to figure out how to use her new superpowers as well.

Dreadnought is on my TBR. I'm still working through Star-Crossed. By that, I mean even though it's been listed as my current read all week, I actually haven't started it.
Instead, I read the first four Lola Levine books since I had started with the fifth. I also read about half of Giant Days, Volume 3. I need to return books to the library so I'm going with some guaranteed quick reads.
Today's #PrideRec prompt is "trans character," and I wanted to highlight a book that's been on my to-read list a while: April Daniels' DREADNOUGHT. This superhero novel looks completely fun and inclusive, and the main character is a trans girl who inherits her superpowers after a collision with the previous superhero. I've been in a fiction reading slump for months, but I'm hoping to get to this soon. Have you read it?

pickI fully enjoyed Dreadnought, looking forward to staying tuned for Nemesis. Daniel's sudden circumstances, taking on new incredible powers, sets a really unique perspective on transgender stories. Near invincibility has its advantages, still facing heavy reactions and gambles for trust. The action does see some brutal battles, with brilliant sci-fi technologies. pickWhat. A. Ride. April Daniels balances an action-packed story with deeper, sometimes painful conversations without ever talking down to the teen audience. Danny was a fighter before her transition, and watching her start to come into her own as a young woman and a superhero is just as engrossing as this crazy fun plot. I can't wait for the sequel!

so-soThis book is a super hero story about acceptance. More then being about bad guy fighting or powers, it is about being yourself and what it's like for the people around you not to be ok with that, how that feels, and what happens next. A strong book for trans teens.
I've been reading a lot of feminist YA lately, and I think this one does the best job of incorporating feminist concepts in an organic way. It never feels preachy, so The Kids can start interacting with these ideas within the context of Danny's story.
