Well this was delightful! I have had this in my downloads for years, and just decided to give it a go. What fun protagonists, and unique premise for the series! (A lady spy/detective with her maid who is an expert in martial arts) Their repartee and friendship is so refreshing, and they are terrific sleuths. I‘m going back to start listening to the whole series!

Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes It‘s a fun series. 🙂 1w

I enjoyed this one, but it wasn‘t a stand-out in the series. Helma‘s longtime (and unlikely) best friend Ruth is at the center with the uproar caused by her new series of paintings “Ruth Revealed.” Someone thought she revealed too much - and destroyed two of the pieces.

@Gissy so many lovely things! What a thoughtful, generous package! Ted is super excited about his light-up ball (he and Soph are working out how to share it!) And Soph is so excited for new books - she is a reader! The turrón looks really yummy! I love the journal and the books you chose! And the mushrooms are all so cool! I have a mushroom matching game that I had just gotten out the same day we got your package! Great timing!

mabell @Gissy And thank you also for the not pictured candle (it didn‘t make it, even though you had everything wrapped so well!) and the fun holiday sipper! (I put it up out of reach of my helper, and forgot to put it with everything when I took the picture 😂) Thank you so much, friend!!! 🥰❤️🥰 4w

mabell @kspenmoll Same! Do you have any favorite recipes? 2mo
mabell @tpixie Oh I may have to try that! I rarely get the cold drinks (I‘m a big mocha fan!), but that one sounds fun for the season! And I never would have thought of frozen cranberries with yogurt! 2mo
mabell @CoffeeK8 It was! They also had tower heaters that were very welcome 😄 2mo
mabell @Daisey Wow - how did you can juice?? And please share your bread recipe! What a unique combo! I think cranberries would be perfect for balancing rich eggnog 2mo
Daisey This is one of my favorite winter quick breads! https://www.yourcupofcake.com/eggnog-cranberry-bread/ 2mo
Daisey I used the simpler method to can one batch of juice and it should be ready just in time for Christmas. https://practicalselfreliance.com/canning-cranberry-juice/ 2mo
tpixie @mabell your wee one with the puppy is adorable 🥰 2mo
tpixie @Daisey thanks for the recipe! I love both cranberries & eggnog! But I‘ve never had them together!!! 2mo
mabell @tpixie They are my sweethearts! She loves him so much, and he loves her when food is involved 😂 2mo
mabell @Daisey I‘ve printed the bread recipe! I just have to pick up a couple of ingredients & I‘m definitely making that this week! The simpler method sounds like a fun, tasty experiment! If I were more comfortable canning, I‘d do it. Once I‘ve done some canning, I‘ll try the drink too! I wonder how it would be with some spices added with the sugar. You‘ll have to report back on how this is too! (I don‘t remember if you mentioned you had made it before) 2mo
Daisey @tpixie @mabell I hope you both enjoy the bread! As for the juice, I‘ve read about people making fruit blends and spiced versions (although you need to be careful to keep acid content because of water bathing), but I‘ve only made plain cranberry myself. 2mo

Thank you for such a fun package for the two girls, Chrissy! I‘m looking forward to luxuriating with the European bath goodies 🛁 And Soph is delighted with the Halloween book and duck (giving it the smell test), and she already tucked it the cute finger puppets in Ted‘s slow feeder bowl - where all of her prized possessions are stored (temporarily). Perfume from Provence | Lady Winifred Fortescue

This was wonderful! I loved the humorous picture of a Provençal village in the 1930s. Ex-Pat Lady Winifred was someone who (self-portrayed) loved a good time and enjoyed the wild ride of remodeling a home in a new land, with a different language and culture. A few descriptions are a little cringey, but overall I really enjoyed it and will absolutely put this in the reread pile.

Helma meets Chief Gallant‘s children (is it the “next step”?), and that night he ends up in the hospital. A re-re-reread (with a few more re‘s) of this Heyer mystery set in a small British village. I love the small cast of unique characters. Mrs. M with her “U” named pekes, the rascally, aged ex-poacher, the whole enthusiastic Ditchling brood, so many that make this a humorous read - and the mystery is good too! Who shot Sampson Warrenby in his garden? No one has an alibi…

This is such a great series! I read the first six then set it aside for a couple of years, and just picked up #7 - I‘m so glad I did! Miss Zukas is such a unique individual, and quirky Ruth (her antithesis) is the perfect friend for her! I highly recommend this series & it is one to start from the beginning 😊

I couldn‘t remember which Wodehouse featured Bertie on a millionaire‘s yacht - turns out it‘s this one! Not one I particularly enjoy. Bertie and Jeeves part ways due to Bertie‘s banjolele playing. It‘s been years since I read the early books in the series, so I thought I would mix in a few with the newer ones I‘m still getting caught up on. I just love Meg, Michael and Meg‘s whole goofy family! Things start off pretty differently from what they become in later books, but the wackiness is there! I speak highly enough of this cookbook! In the overwhelming world of homemade baby food, ATK created an easy, straightforward path! It begins with the basics of starting solid foods, then kicks off with single ingredient purées, then multi-ingredient “stews” (cod, potato, leek was a favorite), onto finger foods and family meals. Each recipe is clear with extras such as age appropriateness & storage

mabell @TheBookHippie I haven‘t heard of that one! We had a few on our shelves, but this one was the winner! Tried and true recipes, almost all of them loved by the little eater! (She wasn‘t into bananas for quite a while 🤷‍♀️) 8mo
mabell @Gissy She‘s loved it! As you can tell 😂 Some of her favorites were mango and peas and red lentil, carrot, and coconut milk 😄 Now she is very into ANY food she can pick up with her fingers 8mo
mabell @Tamra Yes! 🥰 She loves to eat, so most meals are lots of fun! 8mo
slategreyskies What a cool cookbook! I wish I‘d had that when my boys were little. It looks like it would be so helpful. 📚♥️ 8mo
slategreyskies Also, she is adorable! 🥰 8mo
mabell @slategreyskies Thank you! ❤️ And yes, it‘s a wonderful help! 8mo

Something in the Water | Charlotte MacLeod

Pickpick

Well, this was fun! Professor Peter Shandy is down to earth (literally as a botanist 😆) and clever. Set in Maine, Peter is visiting a small town to collect lupine seeds from mysteriously fabulous specimens. While supping at his hotel, the diner at the next table drops face first into the chicken pot pie. Charlotte Macleod has a terrific way with words and a great sense of humor. I will definitely be seeking out more of these!

Librarybelle I think I have a couple of her books but am not sure if they are part of that series. Sound fun!! 9mo
mabell @Librarybelle I think have a couple of paperbacks too, but I‘m not sure what they are either. I had to put some in basement storage due to space constraints, so finding them may be an issue 😆 9mo
Librarybelle 😂 9mo
CaramelLunacy I read a bunch of her Sarah Kelling / Max Bittersohn novels when I was a kid and really liked them. I'll have to see if they're still floating around here somewhere 9mo
mabell @CaramelLunacy I‘ll have to try one of those next! 9mo

The Daughter of Time | Josephine Tey

Isn‘t it fun to have bedtime reading that makes you extra excited to go to bed?

I‘m enjoying this immensely! And how different it would progress in the age of cellphones and internet. Instead of slowing ruminating on King Richard III, getting details bit by bit, all the information would be at Grant‘s fingers with a little googling. I‘m so glad that isn‘t the case 😄

Tamra Yes! It is a gift to look forward to climbing into bed with a book. 😁 💙 9mo
Chrissyreadit I love this book! 9mo
intothehallofbooks I haven‘t heard of this book before but it sounds so so good!! 9mo

CarolynM I‘m another fan of this one ❤️ 9mo
mabell @Tamra Yes! Not that I don‘t look forward to going to bed anyway 😂 9mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit @rubyslippersreads @CarolynM I‘ve had it on my shelf for a long time - I wish I had gotten to it sooner! Have you read any of her others? 9mo
mabell @intothehallofbooks I think I first heard of it from Litsy, and thought the same! It just took me years to get to it! 😂 9mo
Tamra @mabell me too. ☺️ 9mo
dabbe I loved this one, too! 💚🩷💚 9mo
Chrissyreadit i have not read others but only because of time… 9mo
CarolynM Yes, all of them, they‘re great, but this one is my favourite🙂 9mo
mabell @dabbe It‘s so good! And I shouldn‘t read it before bed because I have trouble putting it down 😂 9mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit So many books, so little time!! 9mo
mabell @CarolynM I will definitely keep an eye out for the others! 9mo

What do a 30 year old jewelry heist, a murder in a columbarium (crypt) and a toucan have in common? More than you would think, as it turns out!

Also, I learned that toucans cannot not talk (I never thought about this before), and they are incredibly messy eaters that adore fruit.

Librarybelle Interesting facts about the toucan! 9mo
mabell @Librarybelle A fun bonus to the mystery! 😄 9mo

I read the book not long after it came out, so I don‘t remember much about the story. However, I did remember there was a fabulous lemon bar recipe! It is a “cockaigne” recipe from Joy of Cooking, so you know it is extra delicious. We made lemon bars recently, so I tried it again. Different from the traditional style in that they are lemon curd bars - the filling sets soft and creamy like it was topped with lemon curd. Very lemon-y! #mtcookbook

Tamra I love anything citrus - sounds fabulous! 9mo
mabell @Tamra They are very good! I haven‘t checked my joy of cooking to compare, but she said the recipe is adapted from it. 9mo

Measure for Murder | Clifford Witting

A country village mystery set amidst amateur theatricals, specifically Shakespeare‘s Measure for Measure.

The story doesn‘t not play (ha!) out as expected, compete with a shocking twist.

mabell @LeahBergen I‘ve read two so far, and enjoyed them (the humor is great!) I will say, and I can‘t put my finger on why exactly, that they aren‘t my favorite mysteries. 🤷‍♀️ 10mo

We absolutely love Good Eats the show, but I don‘t enjoy the books as much. These were just ok.

I also like photos of the food in books 😆

#mtcookbook

Tamra I don‘t watch Alton much anymore. During lockdown I watched his lives on YouTube. Hyper! 10mo
Tamra Food photography is definitely an art! 10mo
mabell @Tamra Love Good Eats - we have the seasons and watch them every weekend! I don‘t care for his live videos or podcast though 🤷‍♀️ It‘s a different humor 10mo

mabell @Tamra And I realized I wasn‘t clear about the photos. I should have said I prefer photos of the food - this book doesn‘t have any! 😂 10mo

Unsurprising, because America‘s Test Kitchen is great, this is a terrific book. The photos, layout, and ideas are fantastic.

This was the Faux Leftover Fried Rice - the Thai version.

Tamra I very much respect ATK, so well tested & written. They can be a bit fussy for casual home cooking; sometimes I break the rules. 😉 10mo
mabell @Tamra You‘re right, they can be fussy at times! I like knowing that the recipe will turn out and why, which is something that makes me nervous about trying new recipes sometimes. Especially ones found online! 10mo
janeycanuck @Tamra @mabell haha - it‘s way safer to break the rules when you know the source is good! I‘m way more likely to make some tweaks on the first try on something from ATK than some random blog. 10mo
Tamra @janeycanuck so true! 10mo
mabell @janeycanuck Good point! 10mo
