Something in the Water | Charlotte MacLeod

Well, this was fun! Professor Peter Shandy is down to earth (literally as a botanist 😆) and clever. Set in Maine, Peter is visiting a small town to collect lupine seeds from mysteriously fabulous specimens. While supping at his hotel, the diner at the next table drops face first into the chicken pot pie. Charlotte Macleod has a terrific way with words and a great sense of humor. I will definitely be seeking out more of these!

Librarybelle I think I have a couple of her books but am not sure if they are part of that series. Sound fun!! 8mo
mabell @Librarybelle I think have a couple of paperbacks too, but I‘m not sure what they are either. I had to put some in basement storage due to space constraints, so finding them may be an issue 😆 8mo
Librarybelle 😂 8mo
CaramelLunacy I read a bunch of her Sarah Kelling / Max Bittersohn novels when I was a kid and really liked them. I'll have to see if they're still floating around here somewhere 7mo
mabell @CaramelLunacy I‘ll have to try one of those next! 7mo

Finished on audio this morning…I read this one many years ago, so I recalled some of the plot line. I adore Agatha for her abruptness and her perseverance as an independent woman, and yet her vulnerability and her somewhat naïveté. Also, I have no clue what she sees in James Lacey. He kind of resembles a Mr. Darcy character, but it feels to me like he takes his aloofness to a new level. Fun listen! #192025 #1994

Bookzombie I need to get back to this series, but I feel the same about Lacey. 2y
Librarybelle @Bookzombie Glad I‘m not the only one! 2y
janeycanuck I‘m making my way through the series for the first time (I‘m on Book 6) and I‘ve lost count of the number of times I‘ve wanted to punch James Lacey. 2y
Librarybelle @janeycanuck 😂 I have no clue what Agatha sees in him! 2y

I first heard about the Mirabal sisters when I read Brazen a few years ago and I knew that I wanted to know more. Dying research for #foodandlit #DominicanRebublic I came across this book, and knew that I had to read. All about the butterflies, the sisters, Patria, Dede, Minerva and Mate. Four sisters who joined in on the fight against the dictator Trujillo. To be honest I had some trouble getting into the story, but at the same time I wanted to

AnneCecilie read on. This is a fiction book so the author has taken some liberties. It says in the postscript that November 25, the day of 3 of the sisters murder, has been declared the International Day Against Violence Against Women in their honor 2y

Brunetti is slowly growing on me, and I think a lot of it has to do with his dry and at times cynical sense of humor. It‘s a heatwave in Venice, and there are times in the narrative you could feel the heat. Brunetti balances justice and truth in this one, with a plot line that has twists. #1994 #19822022

Full disclosure: I'm an attempted suicide survivor, and I suffer from depression. I've wanted to read this book for a very long time, but I feared that it would be too triggering. I'm so glad that I finally picked it up. Elizabeth's story resonates with my own, and her writing is engaging and interesting.

Now that I finally have this book, I can start the #birthdaychallenge! This was a bestseller in 1994, the year I was born. #readingchallenge #1994

An amazing and sometimes heartbreaking read. Nelson Mandela is truly a hero.

Suzze When I said good morning to Alexa today (Amazon Echo), she said Mandela was freed from prison on this day in 1990. 8y
