Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener
Agatha Raisin and the Potted Gardener | M.C. Beaton
24 posts | 54 read | 13 to read
Agatha goes digging where she shouldn't... Agatha is taken aback when she finds a new woman ensconced in the affections of her attractive bachelor neighbour, James Lacey. The beautiful Mary Fortune is superior in every way, especially when it comes to gardening - and with Carsely Garden Open Day looming, Agatha feels this deficiency acutely. So when Mary is discovered murdered, buried upside down in a pot, Agatha seizes the moment and immediately starts yanking up village secrets by their roots and digging the dirt on the hapless victim. But Agatha has an awkward secret too . . . Praise for the Agatha Raisin series: 'Sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining . . . M. C. Beaton has created a national treature.' Anne Robinson, The Times 'The Miss Marple-like Raisin is a refreshingly sensible, wonderfully eccentric, thoroughly likeable heroine.' Booklist

Another fun romp with Agatha Raisin and all her antics (Book 3 of the series for #SeriesLove2024). A new lady is in town and has caught James Lacey‘s eye, but Agatha is determined to become a gardener to get between them 😊.

I tore through the third book in the series. I love Agatha just as her new friends in the village she retired to do. On to book four!

Finished on audio this morning…I read this one many years ago, so I recalled some of the plot line. I adore Agatha for her abruptness and her perseverance as an independent woman, and yet her vulnerability and her somewhat naïveté. Also, I have no clue what she sees in James Lacey. He kind of resembles a Mr. Darcy character, but it feels to me like he takes his aloofness to a new level. Fun listen! #192025 #1994

Bookzombie I need to get back to this series, but I feel the same about Lacey. 2y
Librarybelle @Bookzombie Glad I‘m not the only one! 2y
janeycanuck I‘m making my way through the series for the first time (I‘m on Book 6) and I‘ve lost count of the number of times I‘ve wanted to punch James Lacey. 2y

I‘m delighted that I‘m finally getting into the Agatha Raisin mysteries. I think this may be my favourite so far - I didn‘t care for the mystery in the last book and I just didn‘t know the characters well enough in the first book. But I‘m really enjoying the series, especially when I sit with the audio and a puzzle.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Awesome puzzle 🧩 2y
Andrew65 I love this series and I think it does take you a while to get into the various characters. Love the puzzle. Well done 🥳 2y
janeycanuck @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I had such fun with this puzzle! It‘s a whole bunch of quotes from the novels surrounding the portrait of Jane! 2y
Andrew65 @janeycanuck I look forward to seeing the finished puzzle. 2y

I'm slowly making my way thru thus wonderful series. So far, this one is my favorite and found myself laughing even when they found the body. Only the British can make murder this humorous. I read this in a day, I just couldn't put it down

#BookReport - finished 3 books this week. It felt like less, but I‘m pleasantly surprised. All were really good and 3 very different books!

#CurrentlyReading - Magpie Murders, I bailed on this last year but trying again. I‘m enjoying it so far. I‘m really enjoying my Lane Winslow audiobook! The story is good so far.

#WeeklyForecast - Not 100% sure, but I have a lot of books out from library I need to get to.

tpixie I love Alix E Harrow‘s book. This novella is in line ups for a couple of awards/ tournaments. She has one more retelling coming up, but she claims after that, a totally new novel. I loved 🥰 3y
Cinfhen And I think it‘s great that you picked up a book you initially put down. Sometimes it‘s all about the right timing with a book!! 3y

Laughterhp @tpixie Yes! I loved the 10 Thousand Doors book and really enjoyed the Witches book this year that she wrote. 3y
Laughterhp @Cinfhen I knew at the time I was reading it that it was me and not the book. And I‘ve really been into cozy Murder mysteries in small villages and this sounds perfect! 3y
tpixie @Cinfhen yes! Good point. Timing is everything 3y

I have a couple of mystery series that I'm slowly working my way through. I read one or two each year. The Agatha Raisin series is one of them. I really enjoyed this one and read it in two days, something I haven't done in years.

I find Agatha in the books to be quite different from the TV series but despite her gruff exterior I still find her endearing. A great fun read.

I‘m so glad they went back to the original narrator! I love Agatha and was so nice to see Roy again. Still not the biggest Jame Lacy fan but he was better in this book.

Loved it. Realized I like Penelope Keith much better as a narrator than the previous.

Liatrek Me too! I‘m listening to this one now and so happy they went back to original narrator🙂 4y

I just started listening to this. It‘s my first Agatha Raisin and why did no one tell me how delightfully snarky she is??? 🤣

Andrew65 A great series! 4y
AlaMich @Andrew65 I‘m always so excited when I discover a new series that I think I‘ll love! 4y
Andrew65 @AlaMich Plenty of them to read too. Also recommend her Hamish MacBeth series. 4y

AlaMich @Andrew65 Thanks, I will check it out also. 😊 4y
LeahBergen I‘ve watched a few episodes of the TV series, too. It‘s very silly and fun. 4y
AlaMich @LeahBergen I‘ve never seen the TV series. I didn‘t even realize when I borrowed it that what I thought was the audiobook version is actually part of a BBC dramatized version of her books. It‘s hilarious! 4y
MsMelissa I really need to try this series! 4y
AlaMich @Book_Fiend_Melissa Well, I can definitely vouch for the BBC dramatizations. The woman playing Agatha is perfect! 4y
MsMelissa I‘ll probably have to go with print. I don‘t get along with audiobooks. Reading on paper isn‘t an issue, but my mind wanders terribly when trying to listen to books. The only time I‘ve ever managed audiobooks is when I suffered from a prolonged period of vertigo and could do nothing but lie in bed and listen to them. When I recovered I went right back to being distracted again 😂 4y

I‘m on book 3 of the Agatha Raisin series and was so excited to find a bunch of these on Audible Plus. It‘s my first time listening to the series instead of reading it with my eyeballs and I am quite pleasantly surprised. Agatha is hilarious and I can‘t wait to see what she does next! 4⭐️

Catching up, since I missed yesterday. This is not the first book in the Agatha Raisin series, but it‘s the first one I read, thanks to the wonderful @BlameJennyJane This is a fun series; I‘ve gone back and started at the beginning and still have quite a few to read. The mysteries are good, but Agatha‘s character is what hooked me. I alternate between laughing and 🤦‍♀️

Andrew65 I love this series. Have you tried the Hamish MacBeth series by the same author. 4y
Lynnsoprano @Andrew65 I haven‘t, will have to add that to the never ending TBR 😄 4y
Andrew65 @Lynnsoprano I enjoy these more even than Agatha Raisin. 4y

These have been my comfort reads during quarantine. Liked this one particularly because it had to do with gardening - as much as a cozy mystery does.

If I was at home I would have done some creative staging of this wonderful mystery, but as we‘re at our son‘s home after flying back to Florida from Pennsylvania, I will just say that, thanks to @BlameJennyJane I have found a great series, and I want to read more if these. Agatha is a fascinating character, I love the Cotswolds setting, and the mystery was intriguing. Fun, fun, fun.

ValerieAndBooks Hope you had a great time 💖 5y

OMG, @BlameJennyJane you are the best swap partner, not the worst 😂 I love everything in my #cozyswap box, and I love how creative it is. The “weapon” is perfect! Thank you, thank you😘😘 Thanks also to @Avanders for her usual superb job of swap organizing.

BlameJennyJane Oh my goodness... still not sure about my swapworthiness... But you are welcome. 😊And it was only after the box left that I realized you despise gummy things and I sent those squishy brain candy things. Toss ‘em! Happy fall! Happy Cozy Season! 🍁🍁 5y

Thanks to my library‘s audiobook collection I‘m tearing through the Agatha Raisin series. This one was fun, even though the murder in this one was kind of creepy. I appreciate #CozyintheSun giving me an excuse to go straight to book 4!

My adoration for the detail on how the murdered are found always intrigues me!

With jealousy streaking through Agatha at the new lady in the village, isn't it only natural for people to think that she is the murderess?
But is James as interested in a new love affair with someone other than Agatha or not? .....

The third I‘ve read and they all make me laugh out loud. The brilliant narration for the audiobook absolutely adds to my enjoyment of this series, along with the hilarious description of local villagers and the sharp, biting remarks of the main character. #agatharaisin

Sometimes you are in three mood for a cliched cozy mystery and sometimes you aren't. When you are, this is a good series to reach for.

Another Agatha Raisin that I inhaled in two nights. In this, Mary Fortune is murdered by being planted in her greenhouse, head and shoulders in dirt. While Agatha and James investigate, they learn a lot about how terrible Mary really was and have to try and narrow down the best possible suspect/s when it seems like everyone has motive. I knew who'd done it (courtesy of my TV series binge), but it didn't matter. Carsely is becoming my happy place!

jmtrivera I haven't tried any Agatha Raisin yet, but I've been considering. I take it you recommend? 8y
LauraBrook @jmtrivera I do! I'd start with the first and see how you like it. It seems like they're mostly between 200-250 pages, which is nice. 8y
LauraBeth Now wondering...if I have to be murdered - would being planted in a greenhouse be my first choice? 🤔🤔 8y

rabbitprincess Interesting murder method! 8y
jmtrivera Nice! I'm convinced! 8y
LauraBrook @LauraBeth Hah! I know. Very unusual, especially since she was tied upright like some horribly demeneted "tree". I'd have to pass on that. ? @rabbitprincess It's the first I've heard of it! @jmtrivera Yay! They're pretty quick reads. And there's one season of a TV series too, so yay for that! 8y
jmtrivera I hadn't heard of the TV series! Bonus yay! 8y
