Dressed for Death
Dressed for Death: A Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery | Donna Leon
9 posts | 17 read | 8 to read
Commissario Guido Brunettis hopes for a refreshing family holiday in the mountains are once again dashed when a gruesome discovery is made in Margheraa body so badly beaten the face is completely unrecognizable. Brunetti searches Venice for someone who can identify the corpse but is met with a wall of silence. He then receives a telephone call from a contact who promises some tantalizing information. And before the night is out, Brunetti is confronting yet another appalling, and apparently senseless, death.

I'm enjoying the unique Venitian outlook on life, love and death. And I love his family. It wasn't very LGBTQ friendly, this episode, but not because of our hero, but rather the attitudes of others, so that made that bearable.

Brunetti is slowly growing on me, and I think a lot of it has to do with his dry and at times cynical sense of humor. It‘s a heatwave in Venice, and there are times in the narrative you could feel the heat. Brunetti balances justice and truth in this one, with a plot line that has twists. #1994 #19822022

You know who is behind it all as soon as you meet him, so this book is all about “How will they get that no-good sumbitch?“ And, of course, Brunetti does.

The language and attitudes are dated from todays perspective of LGBTQ+ rights. Despite that, Brunetti is sympathetic to the “transvestite whores“ in his context of 1994 Italy.

I think this is the best of this series that I have read so far. The plot was very involved but kept my interest to the end. I really enjoy the characters, and I love how the city of Venice is as important as any character. This couldn‘t take place anywhere else. With food and drink so important in these books, I think a picture of our Valentine‘s Day Prosecco is appropriate. Brunetti drank some in the story 😄

BookishMe Stacking the book cos of your pic *burp* 😁🍷😁 5y
Lynnsoprano @BookishMe Sometimes I feel like I‘m gaining weight just reading about all the food and drink in this series 😂 5y
BookishMe Peter Mayle made me expand my wine budget! Lol... this is the series that made me realise epicurean delights matter more than plots ;p 5y

writerlibrarian Such a good series. 💜💖 5y
DrJAdMerricksson Sounds like the Mary Russell series for me. There's a bunch I still have left to read yet. But they are my comfort stories now. My fave is Justice Hall. This series looks pretty cool though! I'll have to check it out. 5y
