In the Market for Murder
In the Market for Murder | T. E. Kinsey
13 posts | 18 read | 7 to read
Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case. Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence's mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck? As they delve further into their investigation, they encounter a theft where nothing is stolen, a s?ance with a troubled ghost and an ever-increasing number of Spencer's family and friends who might just have motive for murder. One thing's for sure: Lady Hardcastle has a mystery on her hands.

My #SeasonalCozies pick for this month since it's set in early spring. I adored the first book in the series, so I'm looking forward to this one.

sblbooks I just read the first book.😀 8mo
BrandedKristen @sblbooks It's fun, right? 😊 8mo
sblbooks @BrandedKristen definitely! 8mo
Allylu Is this one for May? I may read it, too. I really liked the first one as well. 8mo
BrandedKristen Technically, I think the month March was mentioned. I counted it as seasonal for early spring anyway since there's a lot of talk of the weather warming, plants blooming, etc. 😉 8mo

This week's reading twist is the murder mystery turning out to be cheerier and more relaxing than the children's book, or either books featuring anthropomorphized animals!

Will definitely be continuing in the series. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 Having personally solved most of the mystery before the halfway point did make the pacing seem a little slow in waiting for the characters to resolve it, but the world of the story, the interaction of Hardcastle and Armstrong are so pleasant, I don't mind hanging about a little longer.

⚠️ Fatphobia, mention of suicide

Not a sentiment I often see expressed.

julesG Did I mention that your posts don't help shrink #MountTBR? 1y

I much preferred this one to the first in the series as I was able to stay interested throughout the whole book.

I really think the only reason I'm sticking it out with reading these is because I paid for them! Some aspects of the mystery kept me interested and entertained but many things were too tidy and mostly I was just bored.

Another enjoyable outing with Lady Hardcastle and Armstrong! In this, book 2, Lady H, A, and Lady Farley-Stroud attend a market day a few towns over, and one of the farmers ends up face-down in his pie. Was it murder? And, H and A attend a seance in the Dog and Duck - is Madam Eugenie all she seems? Who is leaving messages from the grave on a blackboard in the alley? How many sandwiches can one respectably eat? Lots of fun, can't wait for book 3!!

saresmoore Haha! What a fun review! 8y
VioletBramble So, how many sandwiches can one respectably eat? 8y
LauraBrook @saresmoore Thanks! The book was an influence, for sure. These two adventurous, smartass, feminist, feisty ladies are a delight. More so for being Edwardian! @VioletBramble Hah, quite a few, plus tea and brandy, of course! 8y

This is a cute little cozy mystery series with some very funny banter between Lady Hardcastle and her maid/co-sleuth Florence. I listened to the whole thing today!
