We all know the story about the slave trade, but what if it had been different? What if Africans had discovered the New World and forced Europeans into slavery? This is that story. Doris is playing hide and seek with her sisters when she‘s kidnapped and taking to this new country. All she can think about is returning to her family back in England.

Librarybelle What an interesting storyline! I‘ve not heard of this book. 1y
AnneCecilie @Librarybelle I think it might be one of Evaristo‘s lesser known books, but I‘m reading my way through her backlist ever since Girl, Woman, Other won the Booker. 1y

Overall, I liked this series opener featuring a book town, mysteries, and a cozy murder. As other reviews have indicated, the author‘s choice to describe an off page character with a non-PC description is jarring and makes me wonder why. However, I felt for the MC who had a contentious relationship with the sheriff and a sister who high maintenance comes to mind. I plan to read more in the series. #192025 #2008 #52BookClub23 #SetInAWorkplace

I liked very much this historical fiction novel about the 11th-century Queen Gruadh of Scotland, who inspired Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth. The queen's life is supposedly quite different from that in Shakespeare's story and King portrays her as an admirable character.

One of my African favourites so far for. These are the memoirs of NYT journalist Helene Cooper, who grows up in #Liberia. When the country falls apart after the coup of 1980, she and her family flee to the US. Her less privileged half sister Eunice stays in a country that for years suffers under crazy dictators who recruit child soldiers  and drug them to fight for.. well, for whatever. ⬇️⬇️

#ReadingAfrica2022 ??

BarbaraBB Cooper tries to forget about where she came from, but the Liberian girl within her needs to go back, in search of Eunice. There is so much I never knew about this country, that I have come to love from afar. I‘m in awe of its proud people, always hospitable and dressed up, even on the ruins of civilisation. 3y
Cinfhen Wow!!! This sounds WAY BETTER than the book I read for #Liberia 3y

Graywacke Ooh. Glad to see this title. I listened to her book on Liberia‘s inspiring female president, and it was terrific. 2y

This slow, meandering cozy mystery reminded me of gentle walks along the New England coastline. Set in a fictional small Massachusetts town, this first in the Seaside Knitters series introduced quite a lot of characters and a seaside village with a murder on its hands. I loved the camaraderie between the four friends who work together (and knit) to solve the crime. Not a typical cozy - the pace is very slow - but a good read. #19822022 #2008

On the one hand - the rich history of Portuguese colonialism, and on the other, unfortunately, unconvincing and too dramatic love interests of the main hero which just made my eyes rolling. Too bad, because the story is interesting, dynamic, colourful and written in a solid prose. #SaoTomeAndPrincipe #ReadingAfrica #19822022 #2008
