This was SUCH a hard decision. I debated and wavered. In just the last week, I have read three different nonfiction books that could have (should have?) made the bracket. Ultimately, I landed on this one because it actually helped me immediately, in my present life. This is such an emotional rollercoaster. It was beautiful and heartbreaking, but also funny in places. I seriously wish we could stop policing children and labelling it “class disruption.” Children being themselves is not a disruption. It is honest. Maybe oddly, I‘m angry. I‘m so angry for this amazing human being, I‘m angry for other people living it right now, who are left with zero information about themselves and reality
This has been in my library since 2020. It‘s time to actually read it already.

pickThis was utter perfection. I absolutely adored the conversations between Nimoy and Spock. I love that Spock was almost this alter ego he could talk to in his head about all sorts of things. I don‘t know about everyone else, but as far as I‘m concerned, it‘s not possible to think of Spock without thinking of Nimoy. Through Spock, Nimoy will live forever. What a beautiful human being. What a beautiful book.

I got some new friends while we were reading. The top two are the same octopus, just reversed. The green side glows in the dark. The red one is much smaller and can actually sit on your shoulder via a little magnetic disk.

I don‘t know about anyone else, but the first thing I think of when I hear Spock, is Nimoy as Spock. All other actors who play Spock are held up against Nimoy as the ideal. Nimoy will live forever through Spock, and that‘s pretty awesome.

pickThis had way less philosophy than I was anticipating. I guess I misunderstood what was being discussed and described by the word “consciousness.” It was still a really interesting book. I have an all new appreciation for octopi, and my love of the sea is deeper than before. Maybe not a great book from a philosophical perspective, but still a really good book about life on earth, especially in the ocean.
We‘ve officially reached the end of the book… or at least the post for the last discussion. Final thoughts? Any snide remarks? I‘m here for whatever you‘ve got. lol

so-soThis was uncomfortably heteronormative in places with casual homophobia and odd sexism to go with it. It made parts of the story very awkward. I couldn‘t help pulling for both couples by the end, but I almost bailed. Luckily it was a quick read. I think the problem is that SO much has changed since 2011 in how we talk about gender, identity, etc., and this just has not aged well.

pickI really enjoyed Wil‘s raw honesty in this book. He owns his past, the good, the bad, the ugly. He grows so much and becomes such an awesome human being. I loved his rage at his wife getting crap health care because she was a woman. I was entirely heartbroken by his meltdown over l the horror that was the set of The Curse for him and his sister (some people should be kept far, far away from children).

pickThis one really hit me right in the heart multiple times. It also made me laugh a few times. I fell hard and fast for all three of the MCs after being plopped right into the middle of their messy, tangled lives. I couldn‘t stop going on Art‘s big adventure, rooting for all of them to find happiness and love. There was a tiny little bit of spice to help hold you up through the darkest part of the story.

pickThis one is definitely darker, but I was fully prepared for that. It was laugh out loud funny in places (I was trying so hard not to wake the neighbours with my head under a pillow laughing SO hard at the dragon costume, but mostly the poster plant). It had some really hard parts to read, but it wasn‘t necessarily the dark parts I found hard to read (I‘d guessed at least some of them).

It‘s somehow better than the last book, which I didn‘t think was going to be possible. Plus, there is the bonus of a Bible quoting, Bible thumping, hypocritical psychopath killer being permanently “deleted,” and the constant sermonising silenced. It was chef‘s kiss.
