How is everyone doing, today? How is everyone doing with this book? I‘m opening this week‘s discussion to talk about anything! Let‘s call this our bookish group therapy session. lol
#PeterGodfreySmith #OtherMinds #Philosophy #AdventuresInPhilosophy #DeadPhilosophersSociety
@TheBookHippie @ravenlee @JaclynW @RavenLovelyReads @AlaSkaat @Chrissyreadit @kspenmoll @bnp

TheBookHippie I‘m just setting down with it -gathering thoughts … however- I think I‘d like to be an octopus. I find myself very very aligned with them 😂🤣😂 22h
TheBookHippie Honestly though the book is good. It‘s not about these animals necessarily but us and I am enjoying trying to explore that thought. 22h
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I was seriously have been thinking the same thoughts while reading this week‘s chapter. There are a couple of parts where I was thinking, yup, I‘m an octopus. It‘s so interesting to see ourselves through this other very different lens. I feel like we could all just be octopi and have our own little shell ledge and just hang out down there, ignoring the rest of the world for a while. 22h
See All 39 Comments
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics this exactly!!! I know @kspenmoll has posted some gems while reading and I think yes! It‘s quite fascinating. These last three years I‘ve read a lot of octopus books and I‘ve fallen for them where as before never considered them and then I thought - is it because we are taught to fear them or see them as icky? 22h
TheBookHippie Like I had octopuses all wrong… it‘s like what people did to witches. And now in this time we are living in -this hell scape, I think it‘s very important to learn and talk about all the creatures of the ocean and everywhere and their intelligence and everything else. So people don‘t kill them!!!! 22h
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I feel like this is the same sort of place I‘m at. We are told all these scary things about them in school or we read these stories of giant ones that could eat a human or something, and so we fear what we don‘t know enough about. Then in this book, we‘re looking at these octopi that are as small as the tip of your finger or the size of a pet dog. I want to go diving and put out my arm, just to watch an octopus put out theirs too. 22h
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie what an amazing experience that would be. 22h
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics EXACTLY! Which is why I fear project 2025. And I too want to just swim with them. 22h
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie @GingerAntics what group is this? Because I have been reading a lot about octopi in the last couple of years also. This book has been on my radar for a while. I would love to have read it with a group. Do you really think that if people understood that creatures of the ocean have intelligence the creatures would be protected from being killed? People kill other people. Am I being cynical? 21h
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 they‘d protect an animal over a person sometimes. In my experience once something is in your life, or you have an experience with it, it isn‘t as easy to kill. That‘s why travel, community, zoos, field trips etc are important. We are still reading this book. 21h
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 We are the #DeadPhilosophersSociety you can look back at what we read and who we are. 21h
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie Thank you for the info. I definitely will check y‘all out. I see where you‘re coming from but what about aquariums and whale watches? Their presence doesn‘t keep people from polluting the oceans. Zoos don‘t prevent people from calling climate change fake news. People still want their rhino horns for aphrodisiacs and people still want their gorilla hand ashtrays. I believe it is vital to love and respect our fellow human (cont)⬇️ (edited) 21h
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie beings and equally as vital to love and care for this planet and all the creatures who live on it. But I question the willingness of the majority to do the same. (edited) 21h
TheBookHippie @CatLass007 every one saved is a good day. A lot of zoos and aquariums do massively good work to keep species from extinction. The majority may never do good, it‘s an everyday fight to get the minimum in most things, that‘s just life. I focus on who is doing good and how I can help them. 20h
CatLass007 @TheBookHippie @GingerAntics Have you got a reading plan for the entire year or do you vote on books on a monthly or bi-monthly or whatever basis? 20h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 I think it has a lot to do with the way people are raised and what they are open to. People who were raised in the theology of the world is ours to subdue and dominate can learn something else. People who use rhino horn instead of viagra don‘t have the means or education to know better. It‘s all about giving people opportunities to learn something new. Some will take it and some won‘t. Every opportunity is exactly that: a chance. 20h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 not everyone will take it, but some will. It takes time. There are zoos like we had when we were kids, and there are zoos now that talk about conservation efforts and are part of those efforts. All of those things change how kids see the world. All of those kids grow up to be adults who see the world as something they can work with or against. It‘s all a process. 20h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 you can only do what you can do… and sometimes you just want to join a colony of octopi. 20h
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie girl, same! I‘m ready. Let‘s go. Let‘s just join an octopi colony. I wonder what they do instead of reading. I don‘t think the salt water will be good for the books or our e-readers. 20h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 when we get done with this book, we will take a few weeks off and choose a new book, then we do a chapter a week until we finish. We‘ve tried planning multiple books ahead and it never works. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 20h
CatLass007 @GingerAntics @TheBookHippie You both have said things that make me want to think some more about what I just said. I think that‘s the point of philosophy, having discussions that make you think. 20h
CatLass007 Thank you. I participate in some buddy reads in which the books are planned for the entire year. I participate in others in which the books are voted on monthly. I personally like to know what books will be discussed for the entire year because it helps me plan my budget and my library holds. But I understand that‘s not always possible. 20h
kspenmoll I am still catching up but I loved and laughed at “feisty” Charles the octopus! 19h
kspenmoll @GingerAntics @TheBookHippie My husband has always had a penchant for octopuses because he grew up in FL. We have had books & creatures & he played an octopus with my son. 😀 19h
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll it‘s so life giving reading this book! I too like feisty Charles, shocking I know! My grandson adores them so I‘ve been immersed these past two years and loving it. 19h
GingerAntics @kspenmoll wasn‘t he great?! 19h
GingerAntics @CatLass007 welcome to the party! 19h
CatLass007 @GingerAntics Thank you. This book isn‘t available in my library and it definitely doesn‘t fall within my budget this month and probably not next month either. But I do plan to listen to the audiobook in the near future. I‘m afraid it‘s just a matter of $. 19h
CatLass007 @GingerAntics @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Have y‘all read The Serviceberry? I just finished it and I thought it was excellent. I wouldn‘t mind a re-listen with you if you haven‘t already read it. 19h
AlaSkaat Also a fan of Charles! It makes me laugh how they will squirt lots of water at you simply because they don‘t like you. Why can‘t we do that?? 18h
AlaSkaat I‘m curious to know about their memory 18h
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat I‘m hoping that‘s coming up. I feel like that will be so interesting. 17h
GingerAntics @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @CatLass007 @AlaSkaat anyone else watching The Americas tonight? If not, I highly recommend. Tom Hanks is doing an AMAZING job with the narration. It‘s just breathtaking! 17h
TheBookHippie @AlaSkaat yes!!! We need that skill!!! 17h
AlaSkaat @GingerAntics I confused Tom Hanks for Tom Cruise and was so confused how he could be doing that so well 😂 can‘t watch it in the UK I think. 6h
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat that sucks! Especially because it‘s been done through BBC studios. 4h

4 chapters in and I couldn‘t do this anymore. This is just a giant string of quotes followed by rubbish. Shakespeare wasn‘t a genius because he learned to write and got better at it as he did it, and because one hit wonders are geniuses? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Neil Armstrongs famous quote “makes no sense” because of static or because he botched it? God uses English rhetoric... in a document originally written in Hebrew and Greek? This guy is self important and boring. He doesn‘t have an original thought in this thing. He just says things he believes make him sound intelligent. I just can‘t. 1d
GingerAntics I have multiple books in Apple Books by this author, but I don‘t think I‘m reading any of them. I didn‘t even have time to post here that I‘d started the book. Poets don‘t have great thoughts and no one cares what they think anyway was probably my last straw. #MarkForsyth #TheElementsOfEloquence #Eloquence #NothingEloquentHere #DNF (edited) 1d

This is a love letter to rare books and the people who sell them. This is a wonderful collection of tales from the author‘s time working at a rare bookshop. The book is quite humorous and wonderful to read. It‘s a quick read. I was actually a bit sad when it ended. I‘m sure there are plenty of takes he still has to tell, and I would love to hear them.

Overall, I liked this story. I loved all the prank pulling and all the sweetness, love, and support. I do question if the author has ever been to Texas before, because the books set there seem to suggest that she hasn‘t... but I do believe she has driven (or at least talked to someone who has driven) in Dallas traffic.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I have enjoyed this series, but this is where I get off the merry-go-round. The books are getting predictable now, and the final book feels like it‘s about a minor character. I just don‘t want to at this point. I know it‘s just one more book, but no. I just can‘t make myself even buy it. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2d
GingerAntics The last few books have had some truly cringy moments with absolutely problematic ideas from otherwise good characters. These are even more problematic with the author being a woman. #KelsieHoss #HelloTease #audiobook 2d

This book gave me so many feels! I cracked in multiple places and even cried in multiple places. It is in contention for my favourite book in the series. I loved getting to see what a strong, amazing woman Liv is. She has to be with for crazy brothers. I love her compassion, patience, and her lack of fear to ask for help when she needs it. Mehso-so

Mara was such a great character in the first book, but she is absolutely monstrous in this one. She treats Jonas horribly. She doesn‘t care at all, ever, about what Jonas wants. Everything is all about her and no one else. Then, she just doesn‘t understand why everyone is hurt or upset.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Jonas was such a great guy, until he described his rebound girl as more demure than Mara (as a preferable, good thing). He‘s still way better than Mara and deserves so much better. That one, out of character statement just felt so gross, though. I almost feel this is more a Kelsie Hoss thing than a Jonas thing, because it is REALLY out of character. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics This dude offers to pay part of birth control pills for girl friends because it‘s his responsibility too. His mama taught him right! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics I ended up listening to the final 10-15 chapters at 3x speed and skipping to the next chapter after listening to Mara be all upset about her life just not being fair when she made it that way for 30 seconds. In the end, the WRONG character apologised and made the grand gesture. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 1w
GingerAntics I just... I will not be listening to this book ever again. This very well may have ruined the first book and the third book, because WOW Mara is just such an unlikeable character. I was happily reading the second book of a series of smutty fluff I stumbled upon to help me get over my Onyx Storm hangover, I was met with what is quite possibly the most sex positive, philosophically profound thing I have ever read (in smut or otherwise). 🤯🤯🤯
#SierraSimone #Sinner #audiobook #bookhangover #sexpositive #bodypositive #profound #mindblown #beautiful

GingerAntics “To be fully human is to be fully sexual, and while that doesn‘t mean having sex or even sexual desire, it does mean being fully in your body. It means recognising that there‘s nothing any less holy about your body than there is about your soul. That as long as your body is treated with consent, and respect, and affection, and that you treat the bodies of others in the same way, 2w
GingerAntics there‘s nothing inherently sinful about your flesh, about its desires or lack of desires, about what it does or does not do. You do not have the ability to tarnish her or yourself. AlaSkaat An intelligent alien. - I‘m still confused. Does he mean the octopus can experience things as we can? Dolphins and such are very smart… but do they have consciousness? Can they ‘observe‘ the world? 🤷‍♀️ 2w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat the dolphin brain comes from the same place our brain does, evolutionarily. The octopus brain evolved from a different line. So its brain is fundamentally unique from all other intelligent brains on earth. That‘s what I got from the intelligent alien comment. 2w
AlaSkaat Aa that makes sense. Looking forward to reading more about that 2w
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat it is a truly unique perspective to think about… consciousness through octopi. 2w
ravenlee @AlaSkaat Dolphins have passed the mirror test, a standard test for self-awareness, and demonstrate long-term learning strategies. Without being able to communicate with them about their intellectual lives, that might be as close as we can get to saying they have consciousness. 2w
ravenlee @GingerAntics I like that the author is using philosophy to make the science more accessible, and the science to make the philosophy more accessible. Tying together two intimidating specialties in a way that both become less off-putting. 2w
GingerAntics @ravenlee the dolphins taking the mirror test is also beyond adorable! 100% agree about the accessibility point. He‘s really brought in a sense of wonder for all of it. It‘s wonderful! It‘s fun to read. 2w

Pickpick

I saw the movie first, then wanted to read the book, hoping for clarity on the ending. If anything, I have more questions now. Both the book and (so fittingly) the movie feel as though they end abruptly, as if, in the end, none of it matters. If anything, this is a commentary on the absolute lack of sex education by the church. Surely that would have given this poor family a clue that something was amiss.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Although, I suppose it is also a commentary on the folly of taking physical attributes at birth as the authority on who a person actually is. #RobertHarris #Conclave #Audiobook #pagetoscreen 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads The ending had nothing to do with the whole point of the book IMO. Seems like it was thrown in for effect. I loved its information about the Catholic Church. For me it was about the struggles of priests and the process of choosing the Pope #conclave (edited) 2w
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads the ending made NO sense. It literally couldn‘t/wouldn‘t happen. With more time to process, I‘m annoyed by the ending. I really enjoyed the whole thought process of the office of the pope being the loneliest job in Christendom… possibly the world. 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @GingerAntics Ok! Now, I 100% agree with you. Read my review of the book if you get chance 2w

Well, if you‘re not going to let anyone but the cardinals in the building at night, I suppose they‘ve got to alert the medics (50 meters away in a different building) that they are needed.

I adore these little glimpses that you just don‘t get in a movie.

This is so real, and so abandoned in today‘s Christianity. I feel this is a real reason why so many have left and continue to leave the church.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads I love my church and actually except for the ending, as a Catholic, I loved it. Priests are human beings, IMO, who have the same propensity to sin as others. 2w
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads I wish the church was willing to admit that, honestly. I grew up Catholic and never understood why you would hide abuse… even as a kid. I also wish the church embraced doubt more, but that‘s just me. 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads @GingerAntics I totally agree with the concerns about hiding abuse. But, other churches/religions do the same. I don‘t get the focus on Catholicism. Pedophiles put themselves in positions where they can find their prey in all kinds of institutions. My viewpoint 2w
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads oh, that‘s 100% true. I feel like true “people of virtue,” “men of god,” etc etc, wouldn‘t hide it, wouldn‘t victim blame… but they do. 2w

I don‘t remember snark being so strong in the movie. I‘m going to have to watch it again when I finish the book.

I‘ve wanted to read this since I watched the movie on 1 January. I‘ve just worked up the desire to read it.

kspenmoll What do you think? I want to see the movie. 2w
GingerAntics @kspenmoll the movie was great. I get why everyone was talking about it. I‘m trying to get a better handle on the ending. We had quite a discussion for a ridiculous amount of time over it. Many have said the ending is more fleshed out in the book, so here‘s hoping. 2w
kspenmoll @GingerAntics I hope the book is clearer! I want to do the same:movie then book. 2w

GingerAntics @kspenmoll I have a feeling I‘ll be watching the movie again when I‘m done. The book definitely enriches the movie. 2w
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I wish I could tell you the book is clearer… it‘s… different. I have SO many more questions and both feel like they end abruptly with no answers. Still highly recommend. 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I think he already had a movie in mind when he wrote this book. 2w
DrSabrinaMoldenReads It is alot like “The Inferno” by Dan Brown but provides more accurate info about Catholic religious practices 2w
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads the movie makes 100% more sense than the book. I liked Inferno better than this book, honestly. I think Inferno touched more on the less mainstream, random practices. I think Dan Brown is really good at finding those random, rare practices and rituals that most people don‘t know about to use in his books. 2w
