This afternoon I introduced my grandson to the dot game 🥰 & read Willoughby's Crossroads by Joana Starnes from this anthology for #JaneAustenThenAndNow
Ending just after he meets the Dashwood ladies it offers some possibilities about his experiences & state of mind in the months prior to S&S. It was good. I'm eager to read the other stories but I'll wait to read each story until I reread the original each one goes with. @Crinoline_Laphroaig

Cooper and his daughter Finch live an isolated life in an Appalachian cabin. We slowly discover the reasons behind Cooper's determination to stay in hiding. His secrets- and Finch's curiosity- begin to threaten their safety. When Finch is 8, 2 new people enter their orbit and the dominoes begin to fall. The outside world can no longer be kept away.

I started this but I'm not loving it. Nora is a bit hot-tempered & impulsive, so far not much like Elinor. In fact I was wondering if we were getting this from the perspective of the Marianne character but Nora is the elder & Yanne's actual name is Maryanne so apparently Nora is Elinor. So far Yanne seems a bit bland. I expect a retelling to need to change things to make sense for modern times but I demand the sisters embody sense & sensibility.

bookandbedandtea This has a lot of love on goodreads, so I'm clearly in the minority, but I don't think I'm going to continue. 3d

I finished just in time for the #NancyDrewBR 😄
There was a LOT going on in this one, in a fun way. I took tap lessons as a child and remember being delighted that Nancy could also tap. But I did find the entire storyline about the cats a bit much.

bookandbedandtea @GinaKButler @FashionableObserver There were a few years, a while back, where I read almost nothing but Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory 😂 1w
Kitta Oh none of those for me! 🙈 I loved fantasy/science fiction worlds too much which bear no resemblance to earth but have gotten into Greek mythology recently. 1w
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella So many good stories! And, of course, they're the basis for so many more good stores! 🔱⚡️🔥 1w
bookandbedandtea @Kitta I don't read a ton of fantasy or Sci fi but I've always been obsessed with Lord of the Rings ❤️💍 Any suggestions in those genres? 1w
TiredLibrarian Tudors, and I still have a soft spot for Tudor fiction and nonfiction! 1w
DGRachel I opted for Plantagenets over Tudors, and never really liked much Greek mythology (except Hades and Persephone. Give me ALL the H&P retellings please!). Egyptology? Only if it‘s an Amelia Peabody book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1w
Kitta @bookandbedandtea Ooo if you haven‘t read Shadow and Bone that‘s a great series that came out somewhat recently! Also Legends & Lattes, Broken Earth trilogy or the MurderBot diaries. All of these are quite different lol. LotR is definitely a favourite of mine. 1w
MarissaMiller All three! Mythology in general is a big love of mine, and then my maternal family line traces back to the Plantagenets so that one was a must simply on principle. 😂 1w
FashionableObserver @bookandbedandtea 🤣🤣 I approve. 1w
bookandbedandtea @DGRachel I'm equally fascinated by the Plantagenets! And my interest in Egypt lead me to Amelia Peabody, which is possibly my favorite series of all time. ❤️🏺❤️ 1w
bookandbedandtea @MarissaMiller Me too, on my father's side! I've always had such admiration for Eleanor of Acquitaine so finding out I'm descended from her absolutely thrilled me! 1w
bookandbedandtea @Kitta I've read the first Murderbot.I thoroughly enjoyed it but had a bunch of other books lined up so I've forgotten to get back to the series. I'll make a note! Legends & Lattes looks good too! I'll add it. ❤️ 1w
Kitta @bookandbedandtea Great! I‘ve also been enjoying this series that @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian introduced me to, if you‘re into LGBTQ reads on other planets. Kinda crime focused: 1w

I thoroughly enjoyed this exploration of the Steele sisters from S & S.Their circumstances were well imagined & it was clear why making a good marriage was important to them, as they were entirely dependent on indifferent relatives otherwise. I expected that I'd be sympathetic to Anne but I didn't expect to be so touched by her at times. She is a bit silly but is actually quite kind & she deserves so much better than Lucy! #JaneAustenThenAndNow

This was soooo long. Too long. The history was interesting but the story became overly complicated. I had a really hard time keeping track of all the characters; partly due to how many characters there were but also partly because I listened to this. I think it would have been easier for me if I had been able to see all the names. A soft pick but I cannot imagine reading the next two books.

These are the companion books I hope to read this month. My priorities are The Steele Sisters (I literally cannot wait to be in Anne's head for a whole book 😆) & Suit And Suitability. Sex, Lies, and Sensibility is a library book so I want to try to get it read also. I'll try to get to Jane of Austin around my other reading. Lastly, Incense And Sensibility sounds really good but seems like the series should be read in order.

bookandbedandtea So I'll probably put that series on the back burner till next year, once we've completed reading Jane's works in publishing order. 2w

1- Reread. At least 10 times, maybe more.
2- Character: Elinor, I'm so impressed by her. But I also truly appreciate Mrs Jennings once they get to London.
3- Scene: Elinor giving way to emotion when she learns Edward isn't married
4- Quote: I can't narrow it down
5- Hair gift: HARD PASS
6- Secret vs flirty love: I don't like either choice but I might prefer the flirty one to being kept a secret
7- ⬇️

bookandbedandtea 7- I'm more Sense than Sensibility
8- Tea party: Elinor, Mrs Jennings, and Edward

When I can focus, I'm enjoying the social commentary in this. I am having a hard time keeping the names straight and remembering which people belong to which families. Some of that is due to my lack of experience with South Korean names, but some is also due to the stress of current events. The look and feel of the illustrations has been changing (a bit) throughout the series but I feel like they made a big jump in this book. Suddenly the girls look like they are from the late 60s/ early 70s whereas the oldest one here (from Red Gate Farm) looks like they're still in the 40s.
I'm not sure I noticed that when I was a kid but I'm enjoying the differences now.

bookandbedandtea prepared to read the 2nd book but the last page pissed me off so now I'll have to see when or if I get to it. I realize I'm making it sound like I didn't like the book but I did! I'm just having a hard time with the things that didn't work for me. 🤷‍♀️ 1mo
