Omg this is so hard to put down!!
Omg this is so hard to put down!!
This is a very well executed book. Plot is strong, even the pop culture elements like the podcast don't feel like empty buzz but are an important mechanism in the story. Lucy the MC is great, very enjoyably messy character. There is a really interesting perspective on Domestic Violence which adds a bit of heft to what is otherwise a beach read type book. Nothing truly original but a very enjoyable read with broad appeal
This was great! It took a long time to get into it and I considered DNFing. I‘m so glad I didn‘t! There are a lot of twists and I didn‘t predict the end. I loved Lucy‘s grandmother so much! I‘ve never listened to a true crime podcast, so that whole angle was foreign to me. There is subtle feminism in here along with some very frustrating situations happening toward some of the female characters, but overall I think Tintera‘s points are effective.
I read this for a book club. I liked a lot of it. I didn‘t like some of it.
Personal preference: I am not about twists just to have twists. Also, I like fall out. I wanted to have more at the end showing how things landed after the reveal.
I get why it‘s popular. The book club meeting had a lot of good conversation. But for me it was mid.
A clever thriller, with a snarky as all get out MC, a twist I genuinely didn't see coming (but made total sense looking back at it), and some thoughtful social commentary on violence against women, who people are willing to believe, and societal expectations of a "good victim". It took me about 1/3 to really get into this one, but then I couldn't put it down.
"My life vastly improved once both those men were gone. Men don't protect us, not really. They only protect themselves, or each other. The only thing men ever protected me from was happiness."
Such a good read for all those people who love listening to true crime podcasts!
Also major coincidence that I read two books consecutively with the main character named Lucy but I prefer this Lucy more!
VERY good! Irreverent. Fantastic, imperfect protagonist. Grandmother is awesome. Loved the subtle feminism. I also loved the pop culture references. Very fast read.
This was a story I kept going back to. I listened on a couple long drives and was totally invested. I loved the cast on the audio version. They made the story even better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A podcast exams an unsolved murder and plunges the victim‘s best friend back under the microscope of suspicion. Listening to this on audio made the podcast scenes more realistic. Entertaining enough that I‘d read another book by this author.
Fast paced thrilller with some sharp dialogue along the way. Points for an original take and I didn‘t hate the main protagonist. However it got very messy about half way through and confusing as to who was sleeping with who and whose ex was whose and by that point I didn‘t care enough to keep track. I did love Savvy though and that was a very interesting take. Not as many twists as expected from the hype and I guessed it almost from the start. Ok
Finished this for book club! This is an interesting variety on the true crime podcast storyline seen in mysteries/thrillers! It was interesting to learn things as Lucy was trying to remember them herself. There were some interesting twists. I‘ll be eager to discuss the ending at book club & I did some reading about it online. I‘d love to hear what others thought of the ending. You can post in the comments with the spoiler warning.

Book of the Month has been really good for expanding my new to me author repertoire. This one I read in one sitting, and I've never heard of the author before.

You‘ve heard of CSI:Miami. You‘ve heard of NCIS:New Orleans. This book is OMITB:Austin
Seriously, it would make a great show. There are some absolutely laugh-out-loud scenes - Tintera has a great sense of comic timing. The writing overall was a bit pedestrian, but the suspense was well-crafted. The book lurched this way and that as various characters fell under suspicion, and it seemed like the twist might be something truly original, but…
An entertaining whodunnit that kept me guessing til the end. A little corny but a quick, easy read. This is the author‘s debut novel, she‘s written several YA books. I would read more from this author!
A young women, with amnesia, tries to remember who murder her friend. 🔪
I am so glad I listened to this one! The podcast chapters popped because of that. Took a bit to figure it but most of the characters kind of sucked for Lucy!
Tintera's novel is a thrilling mystery introducing the world of con artists and hidden identities.
I loved this book because Tintera excels at creating a narrative that keeps you guessing. The storyline is so carefully woven, twisting and turning that you never truly know to expect....

Final review of the day (it‘s been like a marathon today 😆)! This was a fun whodunit with the added element of a podcast to really twist up your brain and make you doubt what you think happened. I actually loved the main character Lucy and couldn‘t help but hope she wasn‘t the murderer everyone seemed to think she was. The dialogue was great and the story really flowed well, especially given the short chapters. Definitely recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I really enjoyed this crime novel about a woman searching for answers after she is suspected of killing her friend. The set-up is that Ben is doing a podcast about her case, and I loved how the author created an odd couple vibe. Lucy is a sarcastic, witty but ultimately sympathetic character & her family wonderfully dysfunctional. I half guessed it but there were plenty of twists & turns making for a satisfying read.
Solid thriller, interesting perspective from a small town girl accused of killing her best friend and the podcaster that is trying to find the truth. Unexpected family dynamics and abusive relationships complicate matters as the story unfolds. I really liked the unlikable MC. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks
This was a good, fast paced whodunit. I didn't have any idea who the murder was until the end. It's pretty gritty though and addresses abuse so - not for everyone.
A night of indulgences. A great book and espresso martini. 🤓🍸
Following real life cult cases turns my stomach inside out, so I just don‘t go there. But boy, I have fun reading a fictional cold cases - especially when the narrator hears voices in her head! Even though I figured out the guilty party pretty early it was still a good yarn.

This was my April 2024 BOTM pick. I enjoyed this thriller/ mystery about the unsolved murder of Savvy, a young woman who was discovered bludgeoned to death. Everyone suspected her best friend, Lucy, of killing her but there wasn‘t enough proof. Now, years later a true crime podcaster is reopening the case. I liked the podcast form which made for short fast chapters. I gave it 4 stars. #BOTM. #CurrentlyReading. #ListenForTheLie.
Lucy is suspected of viciously killing her best friend Savvy. Due to amnesia and lack of evidence she is not charged with the crime. She returns home for her grandmother's birthday and everything from the night she can't remember begins to resurface as her case is dissected by a well known crime podcast. This book was fantastic with a mix of humor, mystery, romance, paranormal and a great plot twist!
An overall solid podcast themed thriller with an unreliable narrator. One to best to go in not knowing too much. Not perfect, but for a first book a good time. I also recommend to read this one on audiobook. 4⭐️
Lucy is dragged back to her hometown by her (awesome and hilarious) grandma for a birthday celebration and gets pulled into a podcast about her best friend‘s murder. Only most of the town thinks Lucy did it, so things are pretty awkward. I had a lot of fun with this book and especially enjoyed the humor in it, which I wasn‘t expecting.
I found this so much fun. It was just what I needed when I read it!
The snarky, unreliable MC along with her Podcaster "friend" trying to solve the murder of her best friend was fast paced and entertaining. It's a perfect beach read.
Thank you to #Celadon Books and NetGalley for a Kindle copy advance in exchange for an honest review.
I guess I just don't get it. Honestly, I thought Lucy was a brat and Podcaster Ben was a tool. Whilst I like reading the podcast portions the rest of the book just didn't work for me. I'm a character driven reader meaning its all about the charactersfor me. And these characters were meh and almost unlikable. I really don't get the hype...but hey that's just my opinion. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks
Slight unpopular opinion here, but this story didn‘t work for me. Lucy & her inner “voice” annoyed me & made it hard to like her (even as an unreliable, possibly guilty suspect or victim). I also did not like her & podcaster Ben‘s relationship w/ each other. I didn‘t understand their dynamic & also made me not like him b/c of some decisions he made.
I‘ve struggled w/ each podcast related mystery I‘ve read making me think they‘re not for me.
#botm
Here‘s what I liked: the podcast element, the grandma character, the snark, writing was good. I wanted to pick this up and continue reading, so that says something. But ultimately, it kind of felt like another thriller/suspense novel in a saturated market. An enjoyable read but not one that will stick with me.
Finished my first book of April. Now that I'm all healed up from the bronchitis bout, I hope to dig back into my TBR!

@TieDyeDude
An entertaining whodunit. It's told partly through Lucy's point of view and through podcast transcripts. A woman must deal with a TBI as she tries to find who killed her friend while almost the whole town believes she did it. 4 stars.

I couldn't put this one down and absolutely loved the MC's sarcasm. It's been a bit of time since I enjoyed a thriller as much as I did this one.
Run to read it!

Book 12 of 2024
This mystery/thriller revolves around a podcast, which is a trope that I love. Lucy Chase, the subject of the podcast may or may not have murdered her best friend. The problem is that she can‘t remember any of the circumstances surrounding her friend‘s death. She is a totally unreliable and dysfunctional narrator and I love her. This book is so well written and just grabs you from the get go. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was probably the most aggravating book I've read in like forever. It was interesting but a bit on the dramatic side and repetitive in many places. It's hard for me to say exactly how I feel about this one. It was ok and the thing that saved it for me was the ending. I loved the last two chapters of this book so much. I also still think Lucy was guilty.... Maybe.

I'm currently reading around five books, but this is the most active one. Lucy was found walking while having her friend Savvy's blood all over her dress. She claims she doesn't remember how it got there. Part first-person narration and part podcast transcripts, there is also a vein of dark comedy so far.
Up next on audio…this one came in from my holds faster than expected. 🤪🎧
#bookspinbingo
Amnesia. An annoying and good-looking podcaster. Visiting your parents against your will. Everyone thinks you killed your best friend. How could a trip home be a bad idea? I loved Lucy‘s sarcasm and humor. Loved trying to figure it out as you read the podcast interviews and Lucy trying to remember something. Anything.
