Here‘s how I did on #bookspinbingo in February. I started the #realmofelderlings book but I didn‘t finish it and I didn‘t expect to. I finished 1 series for #serieslove2025, read the short stories I needed to read for #noplacelikeholmes, read my book club book and only read 1 book from my #roll100 list. I also started another #roll100 book but I didn‘t finish it.

I didn‘t realize that it was already time to read the next short story for #noplacelikeholmes but I just looked at the reading schedule that I took a screenshot of and saved to my photos in my phone and it is time. I‘m glad I saved the schedule. I don‘t know how long it‘ll take for me to read this short story. I can‘t believe we‘re almost done reading the canon but I‘m glad we‘re doing it together and that I‘m not doing it by myself.

CatLass007 I was surprised. Maybe this is Conan Doyle, passing the torch from himself to other mystery writers, not so much from Holmes to Baynes. Just a wild thought. 1d

Librarybelle It is a bit surprising, and I think Holmes himself is a bit surprised that he met an inspector “who will go far.” Honestly, it made a nice change that someone could keep up with Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps a show that there will be others as brilliant as Holmes to carry on crime solving when Holmes no longer works cases? 23h

CogsOfEncouragement I thought this was a fun detail. I know I kept wondering if he was actually going to blunder something. It was an added twist to keep this short story from being too similar to others. Especially having SH in the shrubs and Baynes up higher in a tree observing SH undetected, that was very different. Holmes being a good sport about it was also a nice touch. 22h

CatLass007 I suppose it was a social norm. That doesn‘t make it right, especially in these times when casual racism is accepted and virulent racism is coming out of the woodwork. We need to be able to point to this and say, “This is unacceptable in the here and now.” Was Conan Doyle ever married? Because Holmes comes off as misogynistic and I wonder why. 1d

Librarybelle I‘d say social norms. As much as I love classics, it‘s important to acknowledge that the works may contain language and societal attitudes deemed today (or that should be deemed today) as highly inappropriate and incorrect. 23h

CogsOfEncouragement SH states at one point that Scott Eccles was chosen to be the guest the night of these events because he was the type of person the police would absolutely believe. He was there for a perfect alibi - the whole thing about 1am. I feel this highlights the issues of the time. SH discusses how it was so true, Eccles tells a wild story and is believed immediately. Eccles was reaping benefits of this privilege and Doyle pointed it out more than once. 22h

Librarybelle Overall, I liked this one. I‘d like to know the significance of that gruesome bird, unless I missed Holmes explaining it in the narrative. 23h

CogsOfEncouragement I enjoyed this one. I read this collection about twelve years ago. I didn't remember this one at all and had all sorts of incorrect guesses.

@Librarybelle At the very end, Holmes explains he spent time reading up at the British Museum. SH went on to explain it was a voodoo ritual, and “a true voodoo-worshiper attempts nothing of importance without certain sacrifices...“ 22h

For #weeklyfavorites, I read Sea Magick. It‘s about the ocean. It has spells, invocations, meditations and mythology. I really liked this book. This was on my #roll100 list. This week, I finished the short story from Sherlock Holmes for #noplacelikeholmes. I have 2 books in progress: Assassin‘s Apprentice for #realmofelderlings and My Healthy Noggin from my #roll100 list. It has blank journal pages and I‘m journaling along with the book.

I started the short story I didn‘t read last week for #noplacelikeholmes. I started it last night before bed. I‘m almost done. I have chapters 6 and 7 and the epilogue to read now. While listening to the short story, I finished a Cross stitch picture I started and then colored these pictures on some color by number apps I have.

I need to read this week‘s short story from Sherlock Holmes for the #noplacelikeholmes readalong. I haven‘t read it yet because I was busy downloading my Kindle books from Amazon but I‘m done doing that. I started on Wednesday and I finished downloading at 4 AM on Saturday. I have 3,000+ books so it took forever and I didn‘t feel like dealing with it but I didn‘t want to lose my ebooks. I got finished before February 26.
