The Drunken Botanist
The Drunken Botanist | Amy Stewart
Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley, tequila from agave, rum from sugarcane, bourbon from corn. Thirsty yet? In The Drunken Botanist, Amy Stewart explores the dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration, and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol over the centuries. Of all the extraordinary and obscure plants that have been fermented and distilled, a few are dangerous, some are downright bizarre, and one is as ancient as dinosaursbut each represents a unique cultural contribution to our global drinking traditions and our history. This fascinating concoction of biology, chemistry, history, etymology, and mixologywith more than fifty drink recipes and growing tips for gardenerswill make you the most popular guest at any cocktail party.

@BookwormAHN @wordslinger42

You can never have enough plants, same as books. I turned an old cabinet into a plant/fossil/shell treasure trove.

#naturalLitsy

wordslinger42 Oh, I love that! They're all so pretty 😍 I discovered air plants a couple years ago, and my collection of plants has been slowly growing ever since! 2y
AllDebooks @wordslinger42 I've been the same with succulents. There are too many gorgeous plants and sadly, not enough pennies in my account to cope with my demands 2y
BookwormAHN That's fantastic. My present favorites are pothos and my monstera. 2y

More than anyone needs to know about the alcohol we drink, but a lot of fun with a ton of great recipes. Love Stewart‘s voice. I plan on referring to this book when I plant my garden next year so I have good mixers. 😜

SamAnne I've been meaning to pick this up. I've had some fun making my own bitters. And last week I brought in 25 pounds from my rhubarb patch to our local small craft bitters maker to trade (mostly I just wanted my rhubarb to go to a good use before the heat takes it out) for some rhubarb bitters and spicy curry bitters (the latter are great in an old fashioned)! 3y
youngreadrshelf @SamAnne sounds like a good way to have your harvest go@to good use. I planted for fun salads this summer, but nothing ripe at the same time. Anyway, you should read this because it has some fun recipes! 3y

One of my favorite books-an unexpected find in a neighborhood shop somewhere in Atlanta. I was wandering through because I had a few hours to kill between hotel check out and heading to the airport.

Funny, engaging read about the history and botany of plants used in booze. Will teach you things and add many liquors to your wishlist! After reading, I just tried Drambuie for the first time and it's fantastic.

A fun little encyclopedia of plants & drinks. I probably wouldn't have read this if not for book club, and definitely not cover-to-cover. I would, however, recommend it if you're really into the relationship between your produce & your food, which I know many people are. It gave me many fun facts to consider & a lot of different liquors and recipes I'd like to try. Also, it's a really neat-looking book, so it's worth having on the shelf.

I finally made it to Paper Skyscraper in SouthEnd. It‘s only taken me 6 years, despite working 1/2 mile away. This store is dangerous. Paper, books, and knick knacks! Looking forward to sending letters to my pen pals on proper stationery instead of notebook paper! 😂😂 Thank you (I think) to the person who mentioned they had books (and I‘m sorry I can‘t remember who that was😔).

How about a garden meme? 😄🌱🌷

1.) It‘s hard to pick a fave, so I‘ll say lilies.
2.) Brussels sprouts! And okra. And chard.
3.) I have a shared garden with the other people in my townhouse row. It‘s all flowers and a bonsai Japanese maple.
4.) See tagged book! Such a cool idea for a nonfiction book.

If you perpetuate this, please tag me @REPollock and #GardenParty so I can read your answers! 🌺🌱🌹🌿🌸🍀🌼

I loved this! This book ended up being the last one of my list for 3 challenges (#readharder #litsyatoz #litsyreadingchallenge). I didn‘t realize how well researched and funny this would be.
