33 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
Writing a new future takes a little time and a lot of love. Jean Vison never expected to run a book club, until her life took an unexpected turn. Now, with Jean s husband gone, what began as an off-the-cuff idea has grown into a group of six women who meet the second Tuesday of every month for a potluck supper, for wine and laughter and for books. There s Loretta, who deals with the lack of intimacy in her marriage by diving into erotic novels. Dorothy, whose ruffian sons are a never-ending source of stress. May entertains the group with her outrageous dating stories, while Mitzi finds something political to rant about in every book including Loretta s trashy romances. Even Janet, with her mousy shyness and constant blush, has helped Jean rediscover the joy in life. So when Jean s family starts unraveling again her daughter forced into rehab and her troubled teen granddaughter, Bailey, coming to live with her in the interim she turns to the book club for comfort and support. And, together, they all, even Bailey, discover that family is what you make of it, especially the family you choose "

Hello Group L, these are my possible choices for #Round9 of #LMPBC... any preferences? I want to read both, so I will go with majority rules!

Littlewolf1 Children of Blood and Bone has been on my TBR for a while, but both sound interesting 5y
iread2much I‘ve already read children of blood and bone, so would prefer Akata Witch 😄 5y
ads0123 They‘re both on my list, so I‘ll be happy with either! 5y

I read this book for my book club. We haven‘t discussed it yet so it will be interesting to see what everyone thinks about it. For me it was good but not great. I liked that it was about a book club and it wove some actual books into the story. I liked that the members were all different personality types. I liked that the 2 main characters grew and changed by the end of the book. I just didn‘t feel a connection to the characters or the story.

Bought this online as part of my upcoming book club grab bag. It‘s a journal to record notes, quotes etc about books. I plan to pair it with a Pillow Pad, my new reading companion. Hope one of the ladies likes it!

I‘ve been getting ready for my book club to come over tonight and see the new house and go for a swim. One by one people are canceling though. Bad weather headed our way doesn‘t help much I suppose. 😞

rretzler I‘m so sorry! 5y

Lidia Yayyy! 🙌🏻 6y
Fridameetslucy I am so happy with the selections! Gratitude is short on pages - just 64. Hope that‘s ok for everyone. I actually just got History of Love at the bookshop also, so if you guys want me to switch it out - just say so. (edited) 6y

Fridameetslucy @Sward7 excellent so I won‘t change it. but im confused how this works. Blaming it on my concussion brain. I buy each book and write in it then send it to the designated person ? Or do I just buy my chosen book write in it and send it? 6y
Sward7 @Fridameetslucy you only buy your book. We officially start July. We all buy and mark our comments into our own books and mail the book to the next person before the end of the month. You will mail to @mrsmarch each month. I emailed the address. @Lidia will be mailing to you each month. 6y

Hey #lmpbc #round6 #groupJ...some books I was thinking of for our swap. They‘re all under 300 pages, by women authors, two fiction and two nonfiction. I haven‘t read any of them before but they‘re all on my to-read! What do you think?

See All 14 Comments
Sward7 I‘m so excited to be a part of the group. I‘m on the road today but will spend time looking at these and proposing my options tomorrow. Thanks for getting us started. 6y
Fridameetslucy Me too - excited because I love writing in my books. Super good choices mismarch! Gingerbread is in my to read list already. I like the sound of murder in matera also. Let me think about others after the weekend. I have an unveiling to go to for a friends 20 year old daughter - hard sad weekend 6y
Sward7 So far I‘m liking Murder in Matera 6y
Sward7 So, I'm lame and don't know how to properly post. I need my daughter to teach me how to do a pic collage - but until she's home, I will have to post my recommendations here and see if one of you can help me out: The Huntress, The Thirteenth Tale, Thorn Birds, or Shell Seekers. These are the books I'd like to read and share - 2 contemporary fiction and two classics. I'm happy with any of the four.
6y
Lidia @mrsmarch I think I would like to read Murder in Matera ☺️ 6y
mrsmarch @Sward7 Wow! Those are all so long. 😰 I have to keep in mind that I‘m taking a class this summer and don‘t have a ton of free time. 6y
Sward7 Huntress (560 pages), The Thirteenth Tale (432 pages), Thornbirds (704 pages), Shell Seekers (656 pages). Yes, these are all novels with depth. With it being summer, I didn't realize we had a page limit. As a group do we want to establish different rules? What does everyone think?
6y
Sward7 @mrsmarch @Fridameetslucy @Lidia do we want to limit books to less than 300 pages? 6y
Lidia I would like to keep it in the 300 pages limit. I work long hours and I‘m not sure I can commit to finishing longer books. 6y
mrsmarch @Lidia @Sward7 @Fridameetslucy I‘d prefer keeping this book to one that‘s under 300 pages in hardcover — so under 325 or so in paperback (because of size, pbs are sometimes a smidge longer). 6y

I‘m thinking of starting my own book club but before deciding on genre, format, cadence, and so forth. I‘d love to hear from you...
😄what‘s your favorite thing about club?
😡what‘s your pet peeve about them?

Drocchio03 1) the wine! 2) when people only care about the wine and don‘t talk about the book! 🍷 📚 6y
rretzler I‘ve never belonged to a book club although I‘ve always wanted to. I‘ve done some group reads on a couple of book sites, and the group reads sometimes disappoint me because people don‘t actually seem to want to talk about the book. I love to talk about books! 6y
OneCent76 I love the friendships formed and trying books I wouldn't normally pick up. I like a well rounded conversation - not all about the book or all about anything but the book. 6y
Susanita 😀Reading books I might not read otherwise. 😡When people blow off the meeting and don‘t tell anyone. 6y
Tamra Talking books! 👍🏾 Reading books I don‘t want to read. 👎🏾 I‘ve always wanted to belong to a club like Litsy where members bring the books they‘ve read or are reading! 6y

Looking to start a book club in my town, does anyone have any advice?

Chelleo Stay positive and be flexible! I use to run a book club and each meeting was so different. There are lots of books and online resources available for specific details. There was also a cool book club app that someone on here was using but I can‘t remember the name. I‘ll try to find it. Also try the #bookclub feed to find related posts. Good luck! (edited) 6y

Not to monopolize my feed with book related drama, but I need advice and who better than my Litten friends? Yesterday I wrote about a book club posting I made. The good news is I‘ve seen A LOT of interest from it. The bad news is I‘ve seen A LOT of interest from it. Now I‘m not sure where to go from here. I‘m sure everyone who joined won‘t participate, but at 50+ members and growing there‘s no way we could all meet. Any ideas how to mange this??

riversong153 Has the first book been picked and date selected for discussion? If so, I‘d send an evite to those folks asking them to confirm so you can find a space. Perhaps some will have dropped by then. 6y
Purrfectpages @riversong153 I have a Facebook group page to manage invites. Some people are very good about responding. Others so far, not so much. In the long run some of the non responders might end up being inactive, but since it‘s all so new, it‘s hard to say. We have a meeting this week slated to be at a member‘s home. Right now we are probably within the amount for a comfortable meet up, but if a lot more people respond last minute, that could change. 6y
riversong153 I would take the location off of the invite and post a message saying if you don‘t respond by x date, we‘ll assume you‘re not attending. Send the location to the members who have responded in a separate message. 6y
See All 7 Comments
Purrfectpages @riversong153 it‘s too late this go round, but I like that idea! We need to have an RSVP date and the location can be revealed to members who responded. Thanks for the input! 6y
Schlinkles I run several book clubs for the bookstore I manage and generally only about 25% of the people that express interest actually end up coming. 6y
Purrfectpages @schlinkles yes, I imagine that will probably be the case, too. I don‘t want to be a heavy, but without knowing everyone I felt the need to establish *some* rules. 6y
Schlinkles @purrfectpages That totally makes sense. It‘s hard to know what to expect. 6y

I‘ve been thinking about joining Book Of The Month...Any pros and cons from those who have tried it?????

Lovesbooks87 Love Book of the Month! I have been a member for almost a year and a half and haven't had any problems! I have read so many great books since joining that I would have never read if I wasn't a member! (edited) 7y
kstadt929 @Lovesbooks87 Do you ever have a month you don‘t like the selections??? Do you end up skipping the month or just choosing one to try?? One of my hesitations is that I‘m wondering if I would find one from the 5 or if I don‘t join it I could use the same money to pick from any book! But I love the idea of choosing a book I may not have found on my own :) Thanks for your feedback! (edited) 7y
LitLogophile I love botm! I have been a member for about two years and I‘ve only gotten one book that I really didn‘t like. Question for the Littens:
How did you find your book club?
Desperately seeking suggestions so I can start making friends in my new city/state. #lookingforlittens
Ps. The bumper sticker was found while walking the dog but sadly the owner wasn't in sight.

britt_brooke Love both stickers! 7y
RaimeyGallant Nice! 7y
Soubhiville I don't do a local book club, but several bookstores in my city advertise them, and the library too. I'd ask booksellers and librarians and see if they have leads. You could always put up a flyer at your local coffee shop too, and start your own. 7y

Lcsmcat All the book clubs in my area were full and not accepting new members when I moved here, so I started my own. I put a notice in my neighborhood Facebook page and the next neighborhood over, listed a few books I loved and asked anyone who liked the same kind of books & was interested in a book club to contact me. We started small - only 4 active members for the first year, but now (3 years on) we regularly have 10 to 12 at meetings. Good luck! 7y
ReadingEnvy Through a friend I met through a dud book club. Meetup sometimes has them, or bookstores or libraries. 7y

I liked this book but didn't love it. It was a bit intense in the heartache/heartbreak department. The characters were a little predictable. I did like how the fact that a book club was the start of great friendships and my personal favorite book played a part in the narrative.
