The Husbands
The Husbands | Holly Gramazio
This exuberant debut, praised by Gabrielle Zevin as a "time-bending gem," asks: how do we navigate life, love and choice in a world of never-ending options? When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. Theres only one problemshes not married. Shes never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, theyve been together for years. As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she cant remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know youve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

First off, Happy Mother's Day to all the USA mommas! Hope you feel loved on today. 🌷

I adored this quirky book. It does get a bit repetitive, but that is literally the premise. When faced with a seemingly endless supply of husbands and different life outcomes, who/what will she pick? How does one even decide? I chuckled through much of this and thoroughly enjoyed it!

I enjoyed this, but not as much as I wanted to. I think it's a victim of high expectations. A fun concept, with some delightful moments. But it gets a bit repetitive, and I'm not totally sold on the ending. I wanted more growth, more introspection maybe? A low pick.

ChaoticMissAdventures This seems to be the overwhelming opinion on this one! 3d

jlhammar Exactly! 3d
Hooked_on_books I‘m very disappointed with the ending. Really? You HAVE to be married, so just settle? Barf. I liked earlier in the book where she was going forward with the divorce and just exploring what life was like. That would have been a much better ending, whether she ended up with someone or not. 3d
TheKidUpstairs @Hooked_on_books completely agree! I kept thinking she was going to find a way back to her single life having learned something from all of it. And if not that, it totally should have ended with the divorce, and her starting over. Again, having learned something. But it doesn't seem like she learned anything at all! 3d

The premise of this book was such an intriguing mental chew toy! In practice, it got repetitive and didn‘t have the depth I had hoped for. Some of the husband situations stressed me out. Still a fun, light read! #BOTM

tanya1512 I agree and that ending was terrible. I wish they would have went more into depth with just a few husbands 2d

I really loved this book and the concept of Monsters Inc. for husbands. It was nice to see a lighthearted take on dating and relationships while also acknowledging that we all have quirks and will inevitably not love everything about our person. I highly recommend this for anyone who needs a light read filled with delight and a little magic.

This was delightful and unpredictable at every turn! I especially enjoyed the overall “tongue-in-cheek” tone, which is reminiscent of Bridget Jones‘ Diary and other contemporary British literature.

This is hands down one of the best books I have read so far this year. The premise is unique and will make you laugh out loud and maybe cry a bit. Thanks to Penguin and NetGalley for the ARC.

Lauren arrives home one night to a strange man in her house. Turns out he‘s her husband, only she‘s been very single. Then, he goes into the attic and a different husband emerges. This is a fun premise and a very enjoyable book, only the ending is quite weak with a much better ending offered earlier in the book. Low pick for me.

I couldn't put this one down! The concept of a magic attic spawning husbands like a dating app was intriguing. However, it grew repetitive as we barely connected with the many characters. The ending felt rushed, lacking closure. The message about finding happiness within was solid, but the pacing at the end could've been slower to enrich the experience.

A really entertaining book centered around the idea that if Lauren can get her husband to climb up into the attic, a new husband climbs back down. Her world instantly shifts with each new husband. Her job changes, the decor in her house changes, her bank account changes. Her relationships with family and friends changes. Sometimes she lives with the husband for a few days, a few weeks, or sometimes it's minutes. A good 3.5 star read.

Thoroughly enjoyable!! I raced through this one, laughing all the way. I found it quite suspenseful at times and heard myself shouting “Get in the attic!!!!!“ more than once. 🤣 Adored the ending and the audiobook narration, too.

Noodle and I are under the weather, but at least that gave us some time to read and cuddle on the couch.

I really liked "The Husbands."

A unique concept that was well executed.

Lauren has an attic that, once she sends a husband up, a different one comes down.

This was a fun story, and I couldn't wait to see how it would be resolved.

One night Lauren returns home to find a strange man in her flat - only he claims to be her husband. Strangely, everything around her backs him up but when he climbs up into the attic & a different man emerges, also claiming to be her husband, Lauren slowly realises that her attic is creating an endless supply of different husbands. As one is exchanged for another over & over, Lauren begins to wonder 'how do you know when you have the right one?'

OutsmartYourShelf One look at the synopsis & I knew I had to request this one. The idea behind the book was an excellent one & the author could have gone anywhere with the storyline. The first 35% was really engaging & gently funny, however, it went on & on for far too long. The character of Bohai was brought in & I thought this heralded something resembling a plot about to begin, but ultimately his story arc didn't really amount to anything either. 3w
OutsmartYourShelf It was the literary equivalent of a fairground carousel - it looks good but ultimately you don't actually go anywhere. 2.5⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Random House UK/Chatto & Windus, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

THe concept of this was so interesting and it carried it off for the most part. Its kind of a slow build despite the rapid changing husbands. The ending whilst not quite what I wanted, I think actually worked really well for the book. It was a dramatic but perfect conclusion. This book at times had me laughing and others wanting to tear my hair out. One minute i was thinking Lauren you need help and yet I still wanted her to succeed with her plans

I rarely give 5⭐️ to lighthearted books, but Gramazio won me over with the perfect mix of humor and emotion! The ending was just perfect, and I didn‘t see it coming.

Lauren has returned from a hen-do to a husband she doesn‘t know in her house. She discovers she can change husbands by sending them up to the attic. As she cycles through these lives, she learns a lot about herself and has hilarious adventures! ⬇️

Megabooks I had a flare of my MCAS yesterday, which is why I haven‘t been around much. Knowing what it is and having an idea of how to manage it has helped, but I‘m still waiting on a call from the doc to prescribe something to prevent flares. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 it helps! 1mo

Centique Hiya Meg. Just a book question. I think i read a review by you for a true crime book that you really liked in the last 6 months. I remember thinking i should but it for a friend whose birthday is coming up. It was something modern - not historical. Possibly it was a novel but i think it was true crime - anything spring to mind? If not dont worry it could easily be someone else‘s review! 4w
Megabooks @Centique hey, Paula, let me look back really quick! I‘m going to cross reference the storygraph! 4w

I had 6(!) library holds come in in the past 24 hours. Exciting!

Husbands was the only one tempting me from #botm, so I was glad to get it as a loan. Toxic sounded cool because I inhaled way too many tabloids in the 00s. Yesterdays is a Lady Macbeth book that piqued my interest. I didn‘t care for Girl A, but I decided to try the author again with Day One. Bookshop is set in 🇰🇷 and the other is a memoir, my top genre this year!

TheKidUpstairs A friend of mine is reading Husbands right now and says it's lots of fun 1mo
