Out There Screaming
Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror | Jordan Peele
The visionary writer and director of Get Out, Us, and Nope, and founder of Monkeypaw Productions, curates this groundbreaking anthology of all-new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation. Two freedom riders take a bus ride that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the depths of the Earth in search of the demon that killed her parents. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peeles anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers. Featuring an introduction by Peele and an all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices, Out There Screaming is a master class in horror, andlike his spine-chilling filmsits stories prey on everything we think we know about our world . . . and redefine what it means to be afraid. 3.75 ⭐️

Some stories in this collection were 5 stars. Others didn't make much sense to me. It was worth the read for N.K. Jemisen and Tananarive Due. I discovered some new-to-me authors who were also pretty good. I loved the face-eating baby aliens.

I loved the short stories in here. I went in blind and found out that several of my favorite authors contributed.

Low so-so, almost a pan but a couple stories I enjoyed. Most stories I thought “what did I just read“ when I was done.

This is an excellent collection of stories. I even discovered some new to me authors. The stories are varied, from horror to sci-fi, with each one showing the injustices still prevalent in our society.

By far, my favorite was Dark Home by Nnedi Okorafor. But there were so many other great ones in this anthology. Horror fans will be pleased.

I liked this. There are 19 short stories by Black authors that also includes a 2 page forward by Jordan Peele that is just as good as any of those stories. There were devils, alien baby snatchers, a magical family who deals with addiction in a frightening way, there was this sci-fi story about ai that made me work hard and left me feeling rewarded. There were a couple of stories that made me wish they were written tighter. Other than that, pick!

Megabooks I‘ve been wanting to read this! 13mo
TrishB I was looking at this one the other day- it‘s just my dislike of short stories that stops me! 12mo
Reggie @TrishB honestly, these stories haven‘t come back to speak to me like some other collections have so I would say it‘s ok not to get it. It‘s still good though. 12mo
TrishB Thanks Reggie 👍🏻 I trust your judgement. 12mo

1. This is a tough one! I loved the tagged collection of short stories, but I also loved The Reformatory by Tananarive Due and Nestlings by Nat Cassidy.

2. I'm looking forward to seeing what books my spouse gets me for birthday/Christmas. For the past 20-ish years he's gotten me 5 library books selected from my TBR...this is his first year using The Storygraph TBR, and I'm excited to see what he picks!

Like all short story collections I've read, some of these hit better than others, but overall I really like this collection. I especially like "Eye and Tooth" by Rebecca Roanhorse and "Hide and Seek" by P. Djèlí Clark, but there are several that I think will stick with me. From spooky and supernatural to dystopian sci-fi, there's a great variety of unsettling stories here.

This was obviously going to be a must-read for me: short stories, Jordan Peele, African American writers, and horror. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars

An excellent collection of horror, as one would expect from Peele. So many good authors, some very hard stories but all so well done

If you are looking for a spooky short story collection for the Halloween season, look no further.
Writer/Director Jordan Peele has collected 19 short stories from black authors you might already know & some you don‘t.
While some are better than others, you‘ll definitely be entertained...and a little creeped out.
I mean…that book cover!

Some standouts for me:
Reckless Eyballing
The Rider
A Bird Sings by the Etching Tree
Dark Home
An American Fable

The Writer's Block in Anchorage is an excellent bookstore and cafe. Found one of my highly anticipated releases, had a nice little dinner, and we happened to be there on the night that Year Round Queer was releasing their second zine.

Anywho, not much reading this week, but planning on kicking it into high gear. #scarathlon points at the halfway: 10456 #teamwhoyagonnacall @FlynnDewey

Jordan Peele's anthology of horror from BIPOC authors is pretty great.
The list of authors is impressive. But like all anthologies there are stories in here I really liked, some too weird for me, and some I have already forgotten.
I have finally come to realize that Nalo Hopinson is not for me, and that I just love N.K. Jemisin, and Nnedi Okorafor is always a solid choice.

Jordan Peele is a favorite artist of mine, horror is a favorite genre, and I love short story collections, so of course I wanted to read this. It really didn't even need to begin with an N.K. Jemisin story to draw me in – but it does, it really does. ( Thanks to NetGalley for the #ARC )
