The Mermaid Chair
The Mermaid Chair | Sue Monk Kidd
The New York Timesbestselling second novel by the author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings (Viking, January 2014) Inside the church of a Benedictine monastery on Egret Island, just off the coast of South Carolina, resides a beautiful and mysterious chair ornately carved with mermaids and dedicated to a saint who, legend claims, was a mermaid before her conversion. When Jessie Sullivan is summoned home to the island to cope with her eccentric mothers seemingly inexplicable behavior, she is living a conventional life with her husband, Hugh, a life molded to the smallest space possible. Jessie loves Hugh, but once on the island, she finds herself drawn to Brother Thomas, a monk about to take his final vows. Amid a rich community of unforgettable island women and the exotic beauty of marshlands, tidal creeks, and majestic egrets, Jessie grapples with the tension of desire and the struggle to deny it, with a freedom that feels overwhelmingly right and the immutable force of home and marriage. Is the power of the mermaid chair only a myth? Or will it alter the course of Jessies life? What happens will unlock the roots of her mothers tormented past, but most of all, it will allow Jessie to comes discover selfhood and a place of belonging as she explores the thin line between the spiritual and the erotic.

In my quest to read everything by Sue Monk Kidd, because I really enjoyed her thoughts about how she came to write The Book of Longings. I set this as #FirstBook2022. Mostly because I had just lifted it off the shelf to fit #WiaN for Mythical Being category. And #ReadICT! But this had problems. I enjoyed reading with a more critical eye rather than a hope-to-love it expectation. #DogsofLitsy #EstherAssisting #Griff #WHPG

My pick for #FirstBook2022 (going to take a break from #TOB2022, tho am working on which audiobook will be first: The Matrix or The Sentence?)
Also, this fits the Mythical Being category for #WiaN2022 #WhatsinaNameChallenge

Ruthiella Sounds like a plan. I think I would try Matrix on audio over the Erdrich title. 3y

In the middle of my marriage, when I was above all Hugh‘s wife and Dee‘s mother, one of those unambiguous women with no desire to disturb the universe, I fell in love with a Benedictine monk. @ShyBookOwl

rockpools That‘s quite a first line! 3y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 @rockpools it drew me in too! I love #flf. It‘s a great way to choose a new book instead of agonizing over the decision. The book with the “first line” that gets my attention is the one I start next. 3y

Bought a “Bag of Books” for the library fundraiser (and book get-rid-of-er 🤣) and the Sue Monk Kidd is the only book I had on my tbr and the only author here I have read. I am excited about the Louise Penny and maybe the Pynchon. I have heard of Karin Slaughter and title The Three Weissmans of Westport. Any here I need to read first? #booksale #grabbag

Hooked_on_books My library still hasn‘t returned to these (and in fact won‘t even accept book donations) and I‘m so bummed! I love a good library book sale! 4y
Ruthiella I‘d be curious to hear what you think of the Karin Slaughter title. I don‘t read thrillers too often but every now and again they hit the spot. 4y
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - who knows when these were donated! The library hasn‘t and still does not accept donations yet. 4y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - I am not in a hurry to get to it, tho. I have a full list going for April already, and am thinking of reading all the Womens Prize long list 4y
Ruthiella @BkClubCare No worries! 😉 Reading the WP longlist is a worthy goal! 4y

CuriousG @Lady_Tigana_20 I would say this is not as good as The Secret Life of Bees, but I still enjoyed it. There was a lull midway through and I considered DNFing it, but I'm really glad I didn't do that. Some very interesting things happen in the last 1/4 that make it worth it! 5y

The struggle is real, but 3/4 into the story I realized that I don't care what happens to any of these people. 😂😂😂 So I thought I would end on a positive and post a pic of a heron spotted while walking last week. 🐓🐦🦆 #birdsoflitsy #LitsyAtoZ2019 @lynneamch you know I tried!

I forced myself to read to chapter 17 because I hate giving up on books, but this one was incredibly boring for me. I'm glad I got it at a yard sale. The protagonist is bland, the attraction up til that point is just awkward, and the other characters are unmemorable. Solid Meh.

How many pages/chapters/etc do you usually give a book before you DNF? I know I haven't hit the major plot yet, but I'm feeling so meeeehhhhh about this book.

PagesByTheWater I would say 5 chapters. I almost DNFd the book I‘m currently reading after the first chapter. It didn‘t get better but it didn‘t get worse so I‘m putting up with it 6y
SweetAngst @PagesByTheWater Ugh. I just hit chapter 10. I think this is just one of those books I saw the cover of years ago and fantasized it was about something much more interesting. 6y

Bitte, was denn jetzt⁉️

blurb
Buechersuechtling
