From the New York Times bestselling author of Sorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens comes a thrilling new YA fantasy about a teen girl with mythic abilities who must defend her world against restless spirits of the dead. The dead of Loraille do not rest. Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past. When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saints relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes herbut death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself. As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believeif the revenant doesnt betray her first.

I found some more #weirdwords but the only word that sounded familiar to me was Vespertine. When I saw Vespertine, I started thinking to myself,”Why does Vespertine sound familiar? Is there a book called Vespertine?” so I googled it and there is a book called Vespertine. I haven‘t heard a lot of people talk about this book but it sounds interesting.

This month‘s reading has been an embarrassment of riches & I count my discovery of Rogerson‘s books to be a definite highlight. She definitely knows how to tell good stories with complex, interesting magic, great settings, & strong, independent heroines. In this one Artemisia must awaken an ancient spirit trapped in a saint‘s relic in order to defend her convent from possessed soldiers. And that‘s just the beginning…loved it. Would love more.

Another Rogerson for some rainy day reading. This one has nuns, possessed soldiers, a revenant, dark magic…all the ingredients for a really fantastic story in other words.

Read in 2nd week of October
Artemisia is in a peculiar convent where nuns are trained to deal with spirits by using magic and relics. One day the convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia will defend the convent by awakening an ancient spirit with whom she will have an unique bond. The revenant and Artemisia will continue defending people in other places from malevolent spirits. Why Artemisia is called the Vespertine? 3.8/4⭐️

This was okay. I‘m not sure if I actually really liked this one. I liked the other book I‘ve read by the author but I don‘t know if this one worked for me. Usually I love fighting nun books. This one just felt very long and was a bit confusing sometimes.

I‘ll get it out this week before I leave on my trip. Just FYI, my mail will be on hold, so I don‘t know when I‘ll get the next book. #LMPBC

TheAromaofBooks I had mixed feelings about this one as well. I'm still about halfway through Nevernight, so that one will hopefully be waiting for you when you get back, as I probably won't end up mailing it until Friday or Monday. Would it be better for me to wait and mail it when you get back? 3y
Laughterhp @TheAromaofBooks Probably better to wait. But like I said, my mail will be on hold for 2 weeks, so when we get back, the post office should automatically deliver it. 3y

A soft pick, I liked this one but didn't love it. I don't want to say too much because it's an #LMPBC read, but I felt like the “sides“/who is fighting who was rather muddled which left me feeling a smidge confused from time to time. I liked the developed religion and the fact that it was real, and that faith and prayers were an important part of the story. An intriguing concept, but the development struggled a bit in places. Still a fun read.

Chrissyreadit I really like your review. I feel like you are spot on. 3y

I've finished 15 books this month yet the windowsill looks as full as ever!! I have a lot of reading to do before May!! However, in May we are going on VACATION (cue happy music!!) which should mean some catching up. Anyway, this week's top priority will be the tagged book for #LMPBC. Beyond that, we will see where the random-draw fates take me. I should finish Where the Lost Wander today as well. Cannot believe there is only ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) one week left in May! I'm not ready!!

Side note - fabulous bathroom progress is being made and Tom really wants to have the new shower in before we leave. If any of you are interested in seeing what's happening, feel free to check out my Instagram popcornandbooks15 !!!

I really enjoyed this dark fantasy with possession and nuns. This was unique with a cranky damaged main character I loved, and many side characters I loved- including the revenant- and the mystery of right from wrong. @TheAromaofBooks it is finally on the way to you! Sorry it took a bit longer- not because of the book but because of life. Also a DELIGHTFUL card from Diane❤️❤️❤️❤️that brightened my day😘

I'm giving this a pick, but a low pick. Honestly, I think the problem was me because I've been disappointed in quite a few highly anticipated books recently. The book slump continues...
I think I need to either read nothing for a week (is that even possible?!) or find something totally different from what I've been reading lately.

Margaret Rogerson is a master storyteller, and Vespertine is no exception. This fantasy world where the dead come back as mostly malicious spirits, and the nuns bless the dead to keep them from rising is new and fresh while also having similar roots to Catholicism with saints and relics. Artemisia is a realistic, strong character, as is the revenant. I enjoyed the banter between them, as well as the supporting cast!

A fantasy about nuns who fight ghost and spirits. Rogerson‘s books are so much fun and relatively fast reads. I‘d have probably enjoyed this more had I read it without having Covid. The main character becomes friends with the ghost who‘s sort of possessing her and they have to fight to stop bad guys from doing dark magic. It was good. I gave it 4 stars.

As a fan of the Fair Assassin series, I was all in for this dark, medievalish story of dark arts nuns taking care of things due to their ability to see souls & spirits. There is a bigger story of foiling evil plots but at its heart is a strong, odd girl + the friendship she forges with a revenant who possesses her in the heat of battle. Dark world contains violence/tension, but fun sparring dialogue with revenant lightens it up.

Love it! Margaret Rogerson is fast becoming a must-buy. Her YA fantasies have become progressively less romance-driven but kept the powerful protagonists. In this first of a high fantasy series, the MC is one of an order of nuns who can see and control the spirits of the dead. I‘m ready for the next installment, already!

I adore Margaret Rogerson's fantasy, and this newest book (the start of a series!) is no exception. A young nun becomes friends with the ancient spirit possessing her when a army of possessed soldiers and a plot involving ancient, dark magic threatens the peace. Everyone who realizes she believes she's either a lost cause or a saint. I love how antisocial & awkward Artemesia is and how she and the revenant possessing her become friends.

I think it's fair to say that I'll read anything Margaret Rogerson writes. She just gets better with each book, and though the wait might be long with this one, I'm glad that Vespertine is a duology (last I checked). I want more of this story!

If you liked Garth Nix's Angel Mage, you might consider reading this. It has an order of spirits, a ruling religious institution, a strong and likeable heroine, and a lot more.
