Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake | Alexis Hall
54 posts | 53 read | 31 to read
Fans of Casey McQuiston, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez will love this scrumptious and sweet romantic comedy from the "dizzyingly talented writer" of Boyfriend Material (Entertainment Weekly)! Following the recipe is the key to a successful bake. Rosaline Palmer has always lived by those ruleswell, except for when she dropped out of college to raise her daughter, Amelie. Now, with a paycheck as useful as greaseproof paper and a house crumbling faster than biscuits in tea, shes teetering on the edge of financial disaster. But where theres a whisk theres a way . . . and Rosaline has just landed a spot on the nations most beloved baking show. Winning the prize money would give her daughter the life she deservesand Rosaline is determined to stick to the instructions. However, more than collapsing trifles stand between Rosaline and sweet, sweet victory. Suave, well-educated, and parent-approved Alain Pope knows all the right moves to sweep her off her feet, but its shy electrician Harry Dobson who makes Rosaline question her long-held beliefsabout herself, her family, and her desires. Rosaline fears falling for Harry is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Yet as the competitionand the ovensheat up, Rosaline starts to realize the most delicious bakes come from the heart.

Loaded up my kindle in preparation for the looming federal government shutdown & my upcoming vacay.

My favorite headline about the shutdown is “Amid GOP confusion, U.S. braces for ‘first-ever shutdown about nothing‘”

Apparently we‘re living in a Seinfeld episode.

eri.reads Ha!!! 🤣 😂 1y
MissyD Ughhh. We leave for DC for our vacation on the 17th. The shutdown will alter our plans. Drastically. 🙄🙄🙄. Non refundable plane tickets. So we are going regardless. Just changing what we see and do. (May rent a car or take a train to other places of the museums in DC close. I will be sad. I really really want to go to the library of congress) 1y
wanderinglynn @MissyD I wouldn‘t get too upset just yet. A lot can happen between now and then. 1y

The_Penniless_Author On the one hand, I have a federal job that isn't affected by the shutdown. On the other, I'm scheduled to take the FSOA next week, which is going to get canceled. Just hope I can get my money back; thank God I sprang for the insurance on my hotel and plane ticket! 1y
MissyD @wanderinglynn I‘m not too worried. I mean I got married two days after a major hurricane hit the south (Andrew tore through Florida, leveling the hotel we were to stay at…the devastated Louisiana. Leaving my area with no power. Power to the church came on the night before my wedding. My cake arrived after I walked down the aisle. And we left for a makeshift honeymoon in his family‘s cabin in Mississippi. We learned to go with the flow 🤣 1y
wanderinglynn @The_Penniless_Author awesome that your job won‘t be affected. But I hope you still get to sit for the FSOA! (edited) 1y
The_Penniless_Author I'll get to take it eventually, but there's no way next week is happening. I think the only question now is how long it will last. 1y
wanderinglynn @The_Penniless_Author as someone who will be furloughed, hopefully not longer than a week. 1y
TheSpineView Looks good! Enjoy your vacation. I'm jealous, I need a vacation too. 1y
The_Penniless_Author For real! 🙏 Although if I knew it would only be a week or two, I actually wouldn't mind getting furloughed myself (knowing that back pay would be coming, of course). 1y
wanderinglynn @TheSpineView thanks! I‘m going to the Canadian Rockies. 1y

I finished this adorable book while waiting at speech therapy with my little guy (hence the tiny chair in the background). It was super sweet and funny and not nearly as over the top with awkward and cringe-inducing sexy scenes as some rom-coms I've read lately - looking at you Tessa Bailey 🤮.

I really enjoyed this funny rom-com set during the filming of a nationally televised baking show that‘s purposely supposed to be a Great British Baking Show twin. Rosaline is a single mother, who dropped out of Cambridge when she had an unexpected pregnancy, much to the disappointment of her high achieving parents. There‘s a lot of emphasis on social class, maybe that‘s very British? The dialogue is really, laugh out loud hilarious.Fun read.

jesseastin Note: That‘s from our recent anniversary celebration, about two weeks ago. I think it was a passion fruit flan. Very British Baking show worthy. 😊 2y

Combine GBBO, a bi baker and her precocious 8-year old as well as bestie-cool-aunt-ex, knead and then stir in some raging idiots, precious electricians and mad opticians. Leave to prove for romance and bake for however long it takes you to read this. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

November #doublespin finished! @TheAromaofBooks
This was a cute romance set in a British baking competition. Rosaline is a single mum whose life plan shifted when she got pregnant at 19 and now is trying to follow a new path with her love of baking. She struggles with confidence but soon finds friends and a possible love interest within the contestants. As a bisexual woman, she deals with many stereotypes and gaslighting about her life choices

It took me a few chapters to settle in, but I really liked it. I am a huge bakeoff nerd and I loved all of the references. The cast of characters is true to the bakeoff vibe and generally really likable, except the antagonist. It does a great job of having a bi main character in a straight-presenting relationship without erasing her queerness. I‘ve marked my calendar for the sequel this fall, and will be reading more Alexis hall in between!

A fun British rom-com, especially if you like Great British Bake-Off. The way one situation played out felt cringey and I wish it had been written differently, but otherwise I found myself laughing a bit and really liking it. Photo because I was picturing Candace as Rosaline the whole time.

I really liked this book: authentic #bisexual rep, quirky characters, witty British dialogue, baking (yum!), and a sweet love story with a working class hero and single mom heroine. The way Rosaline's bisexuality is an important part despite the love interests being cis men resonated. This book is marketed as a romance, which it doesn't fit as Rosaline spends 80% of the book dating a "wanker". I want much less Alain (wanker) and more Harry (hero)!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Also forgot to mention the setting of this book is a Great British Bake Off like reality show. So great! 3y

Another enjoyable rom-com! If you're a fan of The Great British Bake Off, you'll love this. It felt a bit long to me and I thought the competition took up a bit too much time, but I loved the variety of characters with different personalities. Rosaline's daughter was my favorite character, both precocious and childish in equal measure. Without giving too much away, I hated the audiobook voice for one character, but perhaps that was intentional.

BookNAround Saw your name in yesterday‘s Shelf Awareness. Congrats! A good friend of mine is a sales rep there. 🙂 3y

Mixed feelings. Loved the writing style and voice. Despised several key characters (as I was intended to) which made it an unpleasant reading experience for many pages. The trigger warning on page 1, while understandable, made me tense for the entire book, just waiting for the inevitable. I also felt it took too long to get to the good parts..

My apple pie, on the other hand..🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

In any case, I still want to try Boyfriend Material now.

I read this book as I sat next to my dad in the ICU during his last few days. It was exactly what I needed. Pure escapism and good book therapy. I love the GBBO and I loved the lgbtq+ theme/characters. I had moments with frustration regarding (spoiler alert, but this is a romcom so you will have seen this coming) her initial love interest and was so happy it ended up the way it did.

Hall‘s humor is a bit dry, & your eyes may be a bit moist by the time you reach the end…but this book‘s neither over nor underbaked. It‘s just right.

I laughed out loud at some of the witty banter. I raised a sympathetic fist in response to some of the sexual & political views expressed. I nodded in satisfaction at a smattering of sexy details.

I will say that the protagonist‘s daughter is almost *unbelievably* precocious. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: I know smart 8 yr olds but she‘s intense. I think her verbal recall could‘ve been dialed back a scotch. BUT her character was totally adorable. The many layered messages (Hall 100% laminated that sh*t) about bisexuality felt heavy-handed at times…but I think your typical GBBO fan *might* just be learning about some of these views (esp with any nuance) for the first time, so I‘m willing to forgive since it seems to be for the greater good. This is not a romance in the traditional sense. It‘s more a story of Rosaline learning and growing into the person she is without worrying about what everyone else thinks.

This book was fantastic. I loved the Bake Expectations scenes because they hilariously aligned with the Great British Bake-off, a show I love watching.

Lauren_reading The last 30% of this book was amazing. We really got to know Harry (who is so good!) and see Rosaline get past the toolbag Alain. I hated that guy so much! It started off slow and with me annoyed with Rosaline (until I thought back on all the dumb decisions I‘ve made), but I grew to really adore this book. 4y
Prairiegirl_reading Definitely more of a rom-com, which is probably why I loved it! It was hilarious! 4y

Well, that was truly delightful. Alexis Hall perfectly captures the Carry On like cheerfully smutty humour of Bake-Off without ever once mentioning soggy bottoms ? The word "innuendar" is a triumph. I liked that the host and judges were reminiscent of, without ever being copies of, the real ones and I loved the gloriously domineering and foul mouthed producer. It's a great romance too, with characters I really cared about ?

CarolynM ☝️At the end there are questions for book club discussion which are by turns serious and silly, as well as recipes written in the voices of the contestant characters. A joy to read from start to finish. 4y

CarolynM @monalyisha I love Alexis Hall. As well as being a great writer, he's a really decent person who is concerned about things like representation, consent and the individual's right to decide for themselves what is right for them. I recommend all his books, and his blog and his GR reviews. 3y
