I'm very behind on reviews but slowly catching up on #OokBOokClub reading @julesG

I liked this one better than Sourcery. Rincewind is still bumbling along but he at least had a good excuse for his cluelessness this time, with his not actually being a demon. I enjoyed the way Eric's wishes were interpreted and the depiction of the Trojan War

Since I just started reading Interesting Times, I guess I‘d better get around to reviewing Eric! I liked Rincewind better here than in Sourcery, but am still finding the Rincewind books underwhelming. This has humorous takes on Faust and Troy and Hell, but it all feels rather thin—more jokey “bits” than story or characterization. But it‘s fun and it‘s Pratchett, and I‘ll keep reading! #OokBookClub @julesG

This is a short book and a nice quick reminder that I still like this stuff. Part of the Rincewind series, the magician finds himself pre-pubescent Eric's conjured demon, doing Eric's wishes. The demons themselves are very upset about this, at least the head demon is. The Luggage isn't too happy either. Pratchett takes on Dante, Goethe, Aztecs, Homer, and the beginning and end of time, care of Rincewind and the Luggage. Fun stuff.

kwmg40 I'd read this at the beginning of the year, so I decided not to reread it so soon. I recall liking the satirical elements but I wasn't all that enthusiastic about the story itself. I think I would have appreciated it much more if I were familiar with Faust. I'll probably postpone a reread of Eric until after I read Faust, and I'm sure it'll seem much funnier then. 6mo

julesG Re-reading the Rincewind books, Rincewind is slowly growing on me. I enjoyed reading my illustrated edition alongside the audiobook. 6mo
willaful I thought the character of the Creator was very similar to Slartibartfast from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 6mo
TheSpineView I agree with @julesG that Rincewind is growing on me too. I liked this take on Hell is paved with good intentions. However, it did get a bit confusing and convuled bit always humorous. 6mo
willaful @TheSpineView The hell is wonderful. I found myself wondering if this had provided some inspiration for “The Good Place.“ 6mo
BookWrym I was more caught up by the Greek mythology. Hell reminded me of Dante‘s Inferno. I did enjoy the demons as well and how easy they were to confuse. 6mo
julesG @kwmg40 I had to read Goethe's Faust in school. Which means we also talked about the other Faust/Bargain with the Devil stories. 6mo
julesG Eric summoning a demon always brings up Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy (YA, definitely darker than Pratchett). There's a summoning scene at the beginning of Bartimaeus that is very similar, probably because Bartimaeus is a very sarcastic demon. 😁 6mo
julesG @BookWrym What Hell would look like if Dante had had Cheerios for breakfast. 😁 6mo
kwmg40 Sorry for commenting on the wrong thread! As you can tell, I‘m not all that good at reading instructions. 😂 Anyhow, I‘m enjoying reading the comments here! 6mo
BookmarkTavern I think this is my favorite Rincewind book! It‘s so humorous, and I‘ve read Faustian stories before, so I thought I knew where everything would go, but the sort of djinn interpretation of Eric‘s wishes just made me laugh out loud. 6mo
julesG @kwmg40 no problem, that's why I answered here. 😉 6mo
BarbaraJean @julesG @TheSpineView I definitely liked Rincewind better here than in Sourcery, but I kind of feel like I'm marking time until I can get to the Pratchett I really like. I'm interested to make my way through the Discworld beyond my previous brief forays, but I'm understanding what people mean when they've said I'll prefer certain sub-series to others. @willaful I wondered the same thing about this maybe being an influence on The Good Place! 6mo
willaful @BarbaraJean It's interesting how many of us fans aren't really into the Rincewind books.

I searched but couldn't anything specifically saying TGP created mentioned Pratchett, but definitely a lot of people have seen the similarities.

Eric summons a demon of unimaginable power to grant his 3 world changing wishes. He gets Rincewind.

I know the story of Faust, so I thought I knew where this was going. But then I remembered this was a Rincewind book & threw my predictions out the window. Which is also where this plot went. With Pratchett‘s signature humor, a smartass parrot, & trips to distant past & the depths of Hell, this is easily my favorite Rincewind book. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

A low pick for me. Rincewind isn't among my favourite #Discworld characters (though the Luggage is right up there among the best), but this was still a fun romp through time. I might have appreciated it more if I were familiar with Faust.

You summon a great and powerful demon that obeys you and fulfills all your wishes.
Well, you got Rincewind instead.
At least he can run from things fast without looking back - that‘s a superpower as well, right? 🤣

Rincewind and the luggage are great characters. The sarcasm and general story lines are good. I should like these stories. I think why these are just meh for me is that it lacks the distinct place, like the Chalk or Ankh-Morpork to anchor the story, making it all feel unmoored.

The Witches series feels much the same to me, with the Tiffany Aching series making the correction to the amorphous settings

This adventure is quick and amusing, filled with references to history and literature that made me snicker. It was great to see Rincewind and Luggage back again. I liked that it was fast and brief, but at the same time, it didn't feel quite as full as the other adventures? Maybe I'm used to more? But I liked it just fine.

I‘m not entirely sure about this one... I like Pratchett voice, but it‘s a bit too much over the top for me, or maybe it‘s just too much...? It reeds like YA book, but at least half the jokes/innuendo would go past a YA reader... And for an adult, or at least this adult, it‘s a little as if the author couldn‘t choose who/what to make fun of, so he just made fun of everything he could think of???

julesG That sums it up fairly well. 5y

Soubhiville I don‘t have the illustrated edition, but I did enjoy Eric. I think I‘ve read this one 3 times... I love that it‘s a quick read, and perfect for in between heavier books. 6y

julesG @Soubhiville The illustrated edition is just that, the same content just with a few pictures added to it. 😁 You're right about it being a palate cleanser. 6y
Soubhiville I‘ve always been intrigued by the summoning demons trope, especially when it comes with humor! And I love to see authors get creative with their demon building and hellscapes. 6y
Soubhiville I enjoyed The Parrot, tiny Quezovercoatl (TP‘s punny names strike again!), And hell‘s paperwork traps- perfect! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes I enjoyed this one too. And yes @Soubhiville I loved the commentaries on corporate infrastructure that were all wrapped up in his Hell. 6y
DrexEdit I'm finally caught up! Thank you short Eric book! 😊 I really enjoyed this one. I felt Rincewind comes into his own here as a refined character. Ironically the eponymous Eric is barely present, but he gets events underway in a good way. 6y
Laura317 I am not a huge Rincewind fan, but the description of Hell had me cracking up. Giving commendations as punishments, all the paperwork was just such fun. 6y
gossamerchild I actually don't like this one 🙄. It feels incomplete, somehow, or a filler between two other stories. I feel bad for saying this 🤣 6y
dariazeoli I was happy for a shorter read this month, but Rincewind continues to make me feel decidedly “meh” - consistency! 😉 6y
Gezemice @gossamerchild I have read this a while ago and was not one of my favorites, so I did not re-read it. 6y
khooliha I am beginning to feel like Rincewind is never going to find himself in the sort of story that let's him develop, which really sets him apart from the other MC branches on the Discworld books. I will say, though, this book wasn't as bad as bad as it was in my memory! Not, you know, real good or anything, but I like hanging with Rincewind and I liked how mean he was to Eric. 6y
khooliha (I also forgot to comment the day this post went up, which is a review of the book in and of itself!) 6y
julesG @khooliha No need to comment on these posts right away. Do it when you have time to do it. 😉 6y
Iblu Sooo, catching up catching up coming through!!!! So this Rincewind subseries appears to have a pattern: a forever on the run moth-eaten wizard encounters a willing or not so willing travel companion for a trip to far away (in space and/or time) places. Plus the Luggage, which in this book featured only as a frustrated running after kind of pet. I still liked it though!!! Although my preferred series are those with the witches... 6y
julesG @Iblu Now that you mentioned it, I can see the pattern. Love the witches and Death, of course. 😁 6y

Sorry @julesG ! #ookbookclub

Not my favourite Pratchett so far. Not sure if I needed to be more familiar with Faust, if I‘d have been better off with print (though the audio narrator did grow on me), or if I just needed to concentrate better, but I found the storyline jumpy & hard to follow.

Which doesn‘t change the fact it has a lot of very funny moments, and some fantastic characters. Especially Lavaeolus. I‘d read a whole book about him!

Eric Thursley is an adolescent demonologist hoping to cut a deal with a demon in order to become king of all the nations of the Disc, meet the most beautiful woman in history, and live forever... except he accidentally summons Rincewind instead (who has been stuck in the Dungeon Dimensions for a few books now) and of course nothing goes according to plan.

Quick and goofy. Loved the time travel back to the Discworld equivalent of the Trojan War.
